Title: Eastern woodland bow
Post by: MikaelMazz on February 15, 2008, 07:22:11 pm
I made this bow about a month ago. It is my first serious bow. It is made of hickory and is about 68 inches long and 1 inch wide for its whole length. It was naturally reflexed, so when I strung it and shot it, it did take some string follow but is still slightly reflexed. It pulls 35 pounds at 29 inches. That is lighter than I wanted but it will get the job done. Their was a big knot on the upper limb that I worked around. It has a "D" tiller with the last 6 inches of each limb being stiff. The string is made of 3-ply twisted deer rawhide. Sorry I do not have a full draw picture.

This is one of my favorite style bows. I have one in my near future.  You may be able to reduce the amount of wood around the knot in the upper limb(increasing cast and reducing hand shock) because it is in a non-bending area(at least I think it is non-bending. Need full draw pic).     Pat

Nice bow. With that much length you could pike it and gain some weight. Bendy handle bows don't have to be as long as stiff handle ones. Good stuff. :)

That's great! - matches perfectly with your arra's. Don't worry about the weight thing, just grab another stave and start another one. Takes awhile to figure all that out ;).

Thanks very much for the copliments.
Also thanks for the tips. I was thinking about reducing the length to gain weight but I decided just to make another in the near future.
I was happy how the pictures turned out. This was the first time I used a lamp to shine light on what I was picturing.
I will try to get a full draw picture either today or tomarow.

very nice!!  tiller looks spot on.  are you gripping the bow in the center?  bottom limb looks a bit longer than the upper.

I might be holding it a little above center. The weather has been not so great for shooting so I am still not used to holding it in the center.
Thanks for the compliments,

Thanks every one.
You can read a little more about my quiver in my arrows post on the arrows section. It is made of hickory bark. Accually from the same tree as the bow. I used my knife to shave off the grey bark and that revealed the nice tan bark underneath. After that I just wetted the dried bark and put it around a log and let it dry stiff. It is not stiched in a cylinder. Then I made a bottom out of twined corn husks and sewed that into the bottom. It is very simple and would be very easy to make with only stone tools.
The bow shoots great. Very accurate. I read that you had to spine arrows to make them accurate but I did not and they fligh very straight. Maybe because the bow is only one inch wide.
