Title: bow shape questions
Post by: loon on November 24, 2015, 07:42:33 pm
If you take a Crimean Tatar style bow with the whole Kasans the same length as the ears of a Manchu bow, both the same length with the same level of reflex and draw weight, would the Manchu bow store significantly more energy? (smoother, more even draw?) Or just a little less? I guess it depends on how stiff the non-tip portion of the Kasan in the crimean tatar style bow would be. That is, does it make a difference (besides stability) if the ear is more or less forward of the limbs if the angle is the same and the ear length is the same?

I guess the Tatar bow would be more stable and perhaps faster depending on construction

Does reflex at the handle make a bow stack more? Would a R/D, or straight design be smoother if the overall reflex is the same?

Thank you

Yes reflexed handles will cause stacking in a bow sooner than if it had no handle reflex. Better to have either a straight handle or slightly refexed.
If two bows have the same reflex (tip position relative to handle position (unbraced) then yes they will store the same energy.
Normal Mannchu bows are super long and have a corespondingly long draw. Crimean Tartar bows are essentially like a longer Turkish bow. The Turkish bows are just about the pinnacle of natural materials bow making.
