Title: chert on chert knapping stack
Post by: iowabow on November 30, 2015, 09:20:31 pm
Talking on the phone tonight with Josh I was trying to explain my chert on chert knapping of a stack. So here is the photo report of that conversation.
So let me set this up for you guys. I wanted to make a new hunting point for the late year winter hunting. I shoot 145 grains points. The flake was much bigger than what I need so I had to chop it down in size. I also wanted to practice thinning the stone with soft hammer rather than the ishi stick. The thinning went well but one flake Stepped and this was a chance to demo the stack knapping chert technique.
The idea is to forget removing it with one or two hits but like 25 and from all over the stack to decrease it's mass.
Lastly I have included a picture of the dogwood shaft I just finished. It is three years old and I worked on it off and on during that time straightening them.

Thanks John!  I could've used that technique many many times in the past.  I really appreciate you sharing it.  Josh
