Title: Flecto Varathane Plastic Oil Finish
Post by: DC on December 10, 2015, 07:32:44 pm
I have a can of this stuff that I've had for at least 40 years. Does anyone know anything about it? I've searched the net and found nothing. It's much like Tung oil in use and finish but it smells a little like paint. Maybe linseed? I'm just curious about what it is. I like it and will use it up although that may take another 40 yrs. :D

That's not the stuff.  It says"Flecto Varathane Plastic Oil Finish" on the can. Wait I'll take a picture. The price tag is still on it. I paid $3.15 for a pint.

With that skull and cross bones on the can(in red) and most of the ingredientsI think I's dispose of it as hazardous waste.

LOL
Did you open it? If it ain't rock hard mix it up a bit if it is still
viscous and the bubbles settle out you could still use it.
It's very much like Polly urethane. Maybe a predecessor
of compeditor. Good hard plastic finish.

It's not a urethane type finish, it's oil of some kind. I use it regularly. It hasn't skinned over in the can. It's like the day I bought it.

I don't think there can be much difference :)

What is Varathane?
Varathane is a brand name of polyurethane varnish that’s been around since 1958. It’s used as a wood, furniture, cabinet, and floor finish. Chances are good that there is wood in your home that is finished with polyurethane.
I guess I miss spelt it on the previous post. >:D

This was manufactured a few hundred miles from here. I found their phone number and I'm going to call them Monday. The only thing about this stuff that is like the Varathane we are all familiar with is the name. It just says"plastic oil" on the can and that puzzles me.

The oil, water etc. is just the vehicle that deliverers the plastic
to the surface of the objest to be coated.
I have used these products since their inception.
Yeah older than dirt :'(

I don't know about wip on but I've use'd spray on for about 6,8 years. But after time few years cracks up. At first I though it came for the cold weather.

What it really shows with age and time.

It cracks up at stress points you missed tillering. Kinda like crystals but not in the wood in the varafane at stress points. Be a great tool in tillering if it did'nt take the time to crystal up.

I use it all the time on skulls. After I'm done glueing, whiteing when finished I'll spray completely with varafane. Your skulls stay white forever. At least for 35 years thats my oldest skull.

Like I said I've never used brush on.

I phoned Rustoleum(they own Flecto Varathane) and the guy I got figured that it is linseed oil, dryers and about 10% Varathane. He had never heard of the product but thought that the modern equivalent would be Watco Natural.

How do you figure that isn't it? the title says exactly what your can does.

The can says "plastic oil finish". It doesn't say #90 gloss. I have a can of #91 satin. It looks like this. This one is just as old and it's separated.
