Title: new deflexed osage bow
Post by: jeffp51 on January 05, 2016, 12:36:39 am
This bow is from a stave I received in a trade from Dean Marlow, and my third osage bow. I appreciate all of the help I received with tiller and layout advice.  I noticed that if I posted a question late at night, that I would often have an answer from an more easterly time zone by the time I woke up in the morning.  The bow is 62" nock-to-nock and approximately 57# at 29".  I deflexed the limbs at the fades, and it took about an additional inch and a half of set, leaving the recurved tips even with the back of the handle.  The finish is 7 coats of tung oil  rubbed with fine pummice to create a satin finish.  I have only shot about 30 arrows through it during the shoot-in process.  right now it is too cold and too snowy to even think about shooting.

comments and critique are welcome.  Thanks for looking.

Very nice bow Jeff! I think you are ready for some Missouri Osage. I'm going to get one picked out for you and on it way to you very soon.

Sweet Patrick, I will look forward to it.

Coming soon also:  I have a belly split from this stave that I made a kid's bow for my 11-year-old.  I have that one tillered to 25 inches--I will take pictures of the two together.

That is a beautiful bow, with fantastic curves and if it shoots as good as it looks you must be over the moon!
The yellow makes a great contrast against the snow.  :)

That amount of string follow with the recurve tips says to me that it is more than likely a very smooth shooter. I really like the look of that bow. Beautiful wood and finish.

Thanks for all the nice words, everyone

That is a very nice bow you got there Jeff, what did you use on those beautiful tips?

The red is padauk, the middle layer is hickory, and the top is an African blackwood/ ebony substitute.  If I were doing it again, I would make the first two layers thinner, as I lost most of the black in the shaping of the tips.

Thank you all for your generous words.  I tend to be my own biggest critic, so I am glad you like it. I personally like the amount of snakey-ness it has. I can't wait to shoot it more, but at the moment I would likely loose all my arrows in the snow.  One thing I was wondering, most of the set this stave took was pretty early on, around the time I went to full brace--not as I reached full draw.  I never pulled past my draw weight, and tried not to leave it drawn any longer than necessary (I can't set up a pully system, because the family room is my only space big enough for the tillering tree--and the wife is already patient enough without telling her I want to start putting bolts in the wall), but I expected to see the set later instead of when I did.

First day free of snow and free of the three different colds/flu I have had this winter, so I finally got a chance to shoot this bow.  It feels fast and quiet.  I hope I get a chance to focus on arrow making sometime soon.--I have not had a chance to make myself some matching shafts since I got the tools to be able to do it.

What kind of mistake causes arrows to group in a vertical line like this?

It's hard to guess what "errors" may have led to that grouping without actually seeing you shoot. It could be a number of things, but I'll narrow it down to the top three likely candidates.

Different arrow mass. Lighter arrows drop less. I don't know if you've ever weighed your shafts but it looks like a matched set, so I'm guessing this isn't your culprit.

Depending on your cant, changing nock point on the string can cause some serious movement. Just 1/32" up or down can make the arrow move inches by the time it gets to the target.

This one is the most likely in my opinion, anchor point on your face. Same as with the nock point on the string, tiny movements in your anchor point will raise or lower point of impact dramatically. I recently suggested to my wife that she raise her anchor point because her groups were awesome but consistently 6" high at 15 yds. She went from her cheek bone to the corner of her eye and it did the trick.

You can play around with all these variables and see how they effect your shooting. Hopefully you can get it tuned in, but hey, all your arrows are in the target so you past the hard part.

When your arrows are in a good line like that, it is usually a matter of practice. Keep that bow arm still as possible. Jawge
