This year's Gathering will be March 18, 19 and 20.
This is a small gathering as bowyer events are concerned, but it's been a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it again this year.
Activities include bow building, arrow making, knapping and 3D course. And a lot of bull being spread around.
Camping can be set up in the yard with drop cords for electricity. Some housing is available.
I look forward to seeing the founding members and meeting new folks.
Dave
-
I'll be there for sure!
-
Glad your having it again Dave.......I'll be there!!

Dave .... where's the location?
Mid-March ...... brrrr ........ but may make it!

Was hoping for, but not expecting, w KY. :'(
-
I guess a location would help. haha

Ozzy just texted me about this. I'll be there! If we want to do shirts let me know and I'll get the ball rolling. Looking forward to this, I need a break!
Tracy
-
I'm for a T-shirt, especially a different, I like the green but variety is the spice. XL . I know Brian wants one too. he says last year's T-shirt is his favorite shirt.
-
I texted Ozzy this morning and encouraged him to make it. He missed a good one last year. I'd be interested in another shirt.

Think he said get there early Friday morning and stay until Saturday night. I'm on spring break so I will be there Friday early until?
Any specific colors? Pink, teal? >:D
Tracy
-
I'm OK with whatever color you pick Tracy.
I haven't heard from Daniel for a while. I'll text him and see if he is going to make it.
-
Why not pink and teal? That would look good on the new and improved Clint.
-
Manly beards and pink shirts just don't go together Pearly.
-
Pink? ??? only for primitive aluma nocks... :) :) ;)
DBar
-
Good to hear Ozzy will make it this year.
I think a sage green or a medium to dark brown would look good with the yellow graphics.
-
Hey Dave.............
As we get closer to the date, let me know what to bring? as far as food that is....... :) ;)
DBar
-
Bill, I sure will.
-
I can bring some marinated deer steaks to grill.
-
I'm in! I can bring another pork roast for the smoker if it is available.
-
Clint and Greg that sounds great. Let's have the deer steaks Friday evening and the pig roast, which will take longer to smoke, Saturday evening. Last year I noticed an a lot of meats and short supply of side items. I'll take care of baked potatoes and salad Friday. I'll cook soup beans and greens and cornbread for Saturday.
Clint, I can throw in some venison steaks if that stretches your supply.
Bill, I think we would all be sad if we didn't have one of your world famous cobblers. :)
I think that will cover the basics. If anyone else wants to add stuff, I could see corn, green beans, bake beans, Mac & cheese... as side items that would be consumed. Just don't hand me a box of mac & cheese and expect that I'll have time to cook it. :)
A big pot of venison chili would probably be welcomed for lunch on Saturday.
-
Just checked my work calendar I'm off and will be there. XL ON A SHIRT AS LONG AS ITS NOT PINK OR TEAL. I don't know how much a hooded sweet shirt is but I would like that
-
Gutshot, glad you can make it.
-
Time and weather permitting I'll try to bring some sort of a log for everyone to split and share.
-
Clint, that sounds like fun. I hope Daniel can make it. He's the Official Log Splitter of Moon Tree. But, I suppose the rest of us could muddle through if we have to. :)
-
Heck ya. I'll swing a sledge to help split a log. Sounds like fun! Dave is Friday ok to show up on?
-
I hope so.....I'm showing up Friday morning around 10 :) gona make up for missing last year :) ;)
DBar
-
Man sounds like a good time! One of these years I'm going to kidnap Greg and Cody and show up
-
I'm sure Ol Dave wouldn't mind that a bit.......
DBar
-
Gutshot, Friday is fine.
Paul, I'd love to have you all down to Moon Tree.
-
I think I'm gonna make it and have convinced a buddy to go with me. Are guns still welcomed? I know they have gotten a bad rap in the media lately
-
Man sounds like a good time! One of these years I'm going to kidnap Greg and Cody and show up
This would be no better time to do some kidnapping and come on down
-
Paul, if you make it to my house you can ride the rest of the way with me. It would save you a couple of hours of driving.
-
Hey lets all build a moon tree bow for this years gathering for the bow shoot! We have 2 months to get them done. What do you all think?
-
I'm putting the finishing touches on a bow right now. I've got a knife to finish up to. I'm not sure if I can get another bow done in time. Although I do have a yew bow roughed out. I might be able to get that one shootable by Moontree.
-
Paul, if you make it to my house you can ride the rest of the way with me. It would save you a couple of hours of driving.
Not quite sure if I Drive to your house that I won't just start cutting down all that sage and head right back up ;) I'd love to make it but too much on my plate though. Sometime, thanks for the invite
-
Daniel, I so happy you're going to make it this year. Rumors have it that Ozzy shall return this year. I think that just leaves Blackhawk as an un-committed for making this a Reunion of founding members. GUN? Are those things dangerous? Hilary and Obama report that scary, black guns will break out of their gun safes by themselves to run through the streets terrorizing alley cats, liberals and cartoon characters. Given that kind of press, I think I'll need to search every vehicle. If a firearm is NOT found, you may be asked to leave. haha
Daniel what do you have in mind to shoot? As you remember I have the 50 yard range in the yard, but I also have a 200 yard range on the back of the farm.
Gutshot I like that idea. It will put some fire in my pants to make a bow. I was hoping to start working on one today, but deal with snow took some wind from my sails. Might I suggest a "Not-So-Ultimate" bow challenge, meaning some work to the bow has to be done at Moon Tree. This could be from building the bow here to just adding a floppy rest or handle wrap.
-
I like that idea Dave so have the bow at 90-95% done and finish it there.
-

That wood be a nice reunion now wouldnt it...i was the first ;) 8)
-
You might as well come on down Blackhawk.
-
Chris if you come down, I'll take a vacation day that Thursday.
-
Dave is was thinking about bringing my rifle I think I may have a new one by then. I would also like to cook bacon and eggs for everyone one morning if you have any idea how much I should cook? I think I have the wife talked into a dessert and potatoe salad too.
-

DLH don't know you but BACON AND EGGS IM YOUR BEST FRIEND. I love me some BACON AND EGGS I really like those COUNTRY BROWN EGGS. if all my chickens make it this winter I'll bring a bunch of BROWN EGGS for you
-
Bacon and eggs sounds great. It's just not natural to have a bow gathering and not eat some bacon and eggs.
-
I should be able to come Friday do some kind of official presentation or something..., maybe Saturday too. Just depends on things around here..
-
Are you going to need help skinning snakes again this year?
-
Did I hear someone mention bacon and eggs, count me in. Aiming for two days this year (Fri and Sat) . Dave if one day if lunch is not covered yet, allow me to supply homemade vegetable soup with deer roast and maybe some light bread or rolls. I can do a 3 to 4 gal. pot. More if you think needed. Looking forward to it. Joe.
-
Daniel, bacon and eggs sound great, I'll throw in some biscuits and gravy. Let's do that Saturday morning.
Balsa, venison roast veggie soups sound pretty darn yummy.
Wapiti, looking forward to your demonstration :)
OH, The guy from Reptile Toolworks, in Mt. Vernon is going to attend. Since, the Classic last year, he's been developing some tools and stuff for primitive archers, including an awesome flint inspired metal point. Moon Tree Gathering is growing, we have a first vender. :) Well, Tracy might be considered the first vender with his T-shirts.
-
Tracey, any more news on the shirt color. And what about a hooded sweatshirt?
-
I spent Friday evening in the workshop finishing up a project or 2 before I start on my Moon Tree bow. I'll start that tomorrow.
Clint and Ozzy, I was listening to Classic County Request on the radio and wishing you all were here. >:D
-
Got a ring chased today for my 2016 Moon Tree Bow. This a stave Clint gifted me last years at the Gathering. Should be some good karma in that stick.
-
Looks good Dave. I can almost hear the Classic Country from here.
-
Tracey, any more news on the shirt color. And what about a hooded sweatshirt?
Not yet. Been swamped with NASP archery at school. I'm checking with the business that does our archery stuff, but I think it's going to be a little bit higher. I think she said a sweatshirt is not a problem as long as she has the graphics.
-
I've got mine shooting. Short static recurve Osage that Greg Gave me at moon tree 2015. I'm going to have to back it with raw hide tonight then it will get a snake skin put on it. Saving the grip and special rest to put on at moon tree 2016.
-
Not sure I'll get to build or finish a bow at Moontree, but I'll dang sure do some shooting! Shaping up to be another good one.
-
Gutshot, that bow is looking good.
Glad to hear you are making it Greg. I wish Moontree was sooner. I'm so ready to get away for a while. Yesterday was the worst day of my life. I need to get away and clear my head. Dave's bow shop seems like the perfect place to do that.
-
OO MY PICS MAKES EVERYTHING SHORT AND WIDE ANY IDEA HOW TO FIX IT
-
OO MY PICS MAKES EVERYTHING SHORT AND WIDE ANY IDEA HOW TO FIX IT
Can I use that excuse when I post a picture of myself?
Are you attaching the picture or using photobucket?
-
Gutshot, nice looking bow, even if it's short and wide. haha
Greg, we can smear some Moon Tree mud on your bow and call it a camo finish. >:D
Clint, you know the workshop is always open to you whether it's the Gathering or not.
-
Vacation has been approved for 3/18. Be there after lunch.
-
Dave, Would you mind if I arrived Friday morning as well?
-
Sorry Clint, check in for the "honeymoon suite" is 2PM. haha Just kidding. Come on down whenever you can get here.
-
This crack might be a "game changer." It's not a good picture of the location of the crack. It came from the handle, across through the left fade and of the limb. GRRR! I thought I had sanded/scraped through most of it, but when I heated that limb to straighten string alignment, it opened up more. I've scraped and sanded it out now, I think. I'm 80% sure that I still have enough wood to make a 50# bow. I had planned on a stiff handle bow, but it's 50/50 as to whether it will have to be a slightly bendly handle bow. My saving grace is the limb are 2" wide. My handle is still over 1" thick. So I'll be making the call as I get more bend in the floor tillering.
Tuesday, I'll even out the trough I scraped in the fade to remove the crack. Then reduce the thickness of the limb through floor tillering. I'll have a better understanding of bow then. After that, I'll attempt to heat out some woo-dee-doos on the other limb. I've never worked on "one limb at a time" during the flooring tillering before. But, if I work on flattening the humps out of the top limb first, tomorrow, that will be all I get done, because I like to wait for the wood to neutralize at least a day after I use a heat gun on it before I try to bend it. We'll see how this technique works out :)
Promise I'll take more pictures, tomorrow.
Man, it great to be in the shop, WORKING ON A BOW, again. I had forgotten how addicting those little curls of yeller wood are. :)
-
Where is the picture Dave?
-
hmm don't know what happened to the pic
-
If that is in the fade you might be able to round it off enough to get rid of it. I don't think it will cause you any problems.
-
Clint, my plan is to have a round handle then continue the roundness out past the fades by a 1/2" then flatten the belly. As pictured, I got rid of 95% of the crack today. I got the limb bending some floor tillering. There's still a lot of wood that needs to be removed. I put a seam of super glue over the crack to prevent it from opening up, again. This crack was caused during splitting around a knot.
Worse case scenario is it splits off at the fade corner, which would still allow me to make an eastern woodland/bendy handle bow.
There's a lot of new stuff I'm trying with this bow. It will probably change hour by hour. I'm just going to listen the to the wood to see what kind of bow it wants to be. If I listen closely to the language of the wood, it should turn out OK.
This stave would have been a pretty good candidate for a R/D. And, I really toyed with the idea, but since I've never done a R/D bow, I chicked out. haha
-
Its looking good Dave
-
The crack is gone, now. I had it on a long string just a bit, today, to see how it's balancing out. A bit more scraping then I'm puttin it back on the caul to heat in some reflex
-
That's hanging with it Dave.....this is a good lesson if a spot looks suspect hang with it a while to see if it turns out .....I think that's call patients.
Way to go...will be looking to see it in a few weeks.....
DBar
-
Sounds like you showed that stave who was boss. Nice work Dave.
-
Sounds like you showed that stave who was boss. Nice work Dave.
I'm sure there will be more battles to fight. But, isn't the whole fun of building a bow from a log. You gotta listen to the wood, then decide whether you can change it's mind or you have to change your mind.
Like I got 85% of the woo-dee-doo out. I can work with the way it is, but I'm going to try to get another 10% out of it when reflex it, Thursday.
-
Just 5 more weeks till...........who all is coming ? I'll be there Friday along with the Outlaw and Gutshot ...I can't wait, I missed last year and regret it. Hope to be working on a bow and some arra's.....be here before you know it....any trades going on?
Dave I'll make some apple cobbler in the dutch oven for sure.
DBar
-
I'm still going don't know if I will be there Friday or Saturday though.
-
I'm working on a bow, we'll see.. I plan to get there about 10:00 Friday, then we can do multiple tree ID and wildlife habitat improvement walks behind the pond. :D
I have to judge a wildlife photography contest at the wildlife conclave at EKU that afternoon. 4:00-6:00
Probably won't be able to come back Saturday, we'll see.
Look forward to seeing everyone.
XL on the shirt if that comes together.
-
Glad you will be able to make it for a while. I found a bow in the corner that needs finishing. I'll bring it and try to get it shooting before the weekend is over.
-
This is kinda odd but I'll throw it out there if anyone would be interested in apple trees let me know and I'll bring some. I have various varitities around 15 but I would have to double check what all I have.
-
Wapiti, here's a few photos for you to judge. I found them in the snow this morning (Monday). The rain had already degraded them. The pattern of the stride first caught my attention. Instead of the canine tracks with front paws shoulder width apart and hind paws hip with apart making 4 track per step, these where toe to heel to toe making 2 tracks per step. There were no toe nail marks. So I googled "bobcat tracks in the snow." It looks like a match to me. While the tracks are degraded, it looks like the "M" shape back pad to me. These tracks where maybe 30 yards from my backdoor, just behind the shed.
Greg is can chime in, also.
-
Back to bow building. I didn't smash out as much of the woop-dee-doos as I had hope to do, because they are in the slight "s" bend in bow. My caul wasn't wide enough to do as good of a job clamping. When I put it on the long string the top limb was twisting in the woop-dee-doos. grrr. I widened my caul and tried again today. Hopefully, this will solve most of the issues. If it does, I'll remove some more wood to get rid of the tempered belly wood, flip the tips and glue on tip overlays. Then the tiller FUN can begin.
Do you know how you can tell a bowyers tracks in the snow? There's golden dust in the tracks. :)
-
Those look like baby sasquatch prints to me Dave.
Last winter my parents had bobcat tracks all around their house and even on the first step going to their porch. We figure it was trying to get to the rabbits that live under there. The bow is looking good.
-
I dunno, those might be black panther tracks... ???
-
I dunno, those might be black panther tracks... ???
Nah, it can't be a black panther. Everyone knows there are no panthers, cougars, mountain lions in Kentucky. ;)
Wapiti, remind me to tell you about the new species of squirrel on Moon Tree Farm--the prairie squirrel.
-
Tracks are just too degraded for a positive ID from me. Good chance it was a cat as you suggest, but I have very little experience tracking in snow down here in "little orange" country. So, I rarely if ever get a chance to study stride and multiple tracks. Mostly just single prints in mud.
-
Dave you got a countdown on how many days till MOONTREE is opened up to a bunch of misfits wanting to tell and listen to stories, make shavings, gravel your driveway with flint chips, feed potatoe chips to the moontree mascot. And just have a good ole time hanging out. Oh ya don't forget about the bow shoot, and all the good food. I hope you have a monster turnout this year. If everybody that came last year will bring a newbie then you will have a bunch.
-
I don't think Wilma the Moontree Mascot made it through the year :'(
-
Oh no 😱😱
-
Sad to say Wilma, is in that big coop in the sky. Or knowing her, in a big workshop in the sky.
I finally got the string alignment correct and flip the tips today. With any luck I'll be making shaving Monday.
26 days till Moon Tree Gathering :)
-
24 days till the fun begins.
I've had to do 3 more heat corrections on the bow to align the string and smush down the woo-dee-doos, but it's finally coming around. I'm ready to brace it now. So tomorrow I'll glue on the nock overlays.
-
Nice looking bend on that one Dave.
-
Nice Dave.
My moon tree bow is done not finished I mean done for its not worth hauling up there. Anyways I'm gonna try to get another one going.
-
Thanks Clint, you know I'm not above advice and constructive criticism :)
Here what I've done with this bow:
The center of the bow is where the web between my thumb and palm will touch the bow. With the way I hold a bow that's the only part of my hand that makes contact with the handle. The arrow past will be 1 1/4" inches above center. The handle below center is 3". The fade for the upper limb is 3 inches long. The fade for the lower limb is 1 1/2 inches long. I will do a double nock groove on the upper limb to facilitate the use of stringer, in case this bow goes to a newby archer. So to sum up this design. I will be holding the bow at the center, with the extended upper limb fade and the extended nock overlay, each limb with be the same length. I tried this design a couple years ago with a red oak board bow trade. I liked the way that bow shot.
Most of the bows I've made have taken a little set about a 1/3 of the way up the working part of the limb. I'm really concentrating on more bend out of the fades to that point and more bend from that point toward the tips. Definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome. :)
This bow has more aggressively flipped tips than I've done before.
Issues: The bow still has some humps and valleys in the up limb. One valley in upper limb on the straight section. And 2 valleys on the inside of the "S" curves of the upper limb. I'm trying to keep the lower part of the valley slightly thinner than the high side is. The thought is maybe it will flatten itself out a little more during the tillering process. I will be monitoring string alignment through out the process. I'm probably way over thinking this process. haha Chime in with your thoughts.
Gutshot, good luck with bow 2. If any of us can be of help, don't hesitate posting pictures here or messaging or emailing us for suggestions. I've learned so much from friends on this forum and I'm still learning.
-
3 weekends away
Tracy any update on the shirts?
-
Nothing on the shirts, I've been swamped at school and with our archery tournaments. I'll getaway hold of the lady this week.
Tracy
-
Tracy, I see your doing shirts again this year.if your deal works out for them this year put me down for 2xl. Thanks , looking forward. Joe
-
Just about there. I have a little tweaking to do out of the fades on the top limb. But I'm going to wait until I can take some full draw pictures before I do that.
Stats right now:
59" NTN
2" wide out of fades
50# at 26 inches. I was looking for 45 to 50#
I'm about ready to dress her up. :)
-
Look'n good Dave...............
DBar
-
Tracy, I see your doing shirts again this year.if your deal works out for them this year put me down for 2xl. Thanks , looking forward. Joe
Trying to get something in the works right now. Waiting for the lady to get back with me on the artwork on the back. Hope to get them and will take sizes when I get the ok from her.
Tracy
Looking good Dave!
-
Dave, that's a nice looking bend on that bow.
Tracy, Good deal on the shirts. Let me know if I need to send some money your way for one.
-
Bill, Tracy, Clint, thanks. It feels good making yeller curls, again.
-
Dave, If it's OK with you I might bring a knife to work on. I need to get a couple finished up before the Classic.
-
Clint, I think that's a fine idea.
-
Good looking bow Dave
-
Are we doing any gun shooting this year? If so, what kind?
-
Daniel asked if he could bring a rifle. Of course I said yes. So, I suppose if we want to shoot rifle that would be fine. We haven't shot that firearm yet at the gathering. :) I didn't ask him what kind of rifle: rimfire or centerfire. I have a backstop on the back of the farm where we can shoot out to 200 yards.
-
I think I'm going to call this one a bow. The tiller isn't perfect but with the woo-dee-doos and rollercoaster twists, I don't think I can get it any better. I shot her a few times today and she shot great considering I haven't shot a bow since Oct. So, it's time to dress her up.
Sorry, I just remembered that I forgot to take an unbraced picture. grr I'll do that tomorrow.
-
Cool I'll bring one center and one rim just in case.
Dave your bow looks gooood
-
The bow looks great Dave. The only rifle I have is a 22.
-
Thanks guys.
Clint, I'm think I remember that Indiana is one of those non-centerfire rifle deer season states? Didn't they just started allowing straight wall pistol cartridges in a rifle format? If both answers are yes, you need to shoot my Rossi model 92 lever action rifles. I have a .357 and 45 Colt. But, bring your .22, also.
I shot the bow a little more today after I worked the handle down. It had some hand shock, so I'll reduce the tip area a bit more. But, man is it accurate. It's gotta be the bow, because I'm so out of practice. I was consistently putting 2 of 3 arrows in the 9-10 ring at 15 yards. The third arrow was still in the kill zone.
Pictures of unbraces and profile
-
Nice looking bow Dave !
The lady that does the shirts isn't doing shirts anymore. I'm checking with the business that does our archery shirts at school and see if she can get it done. I'll let you know if it works out.
Tracy
-
I mowed the 3D course today.
9 days till the Gathering.
-
Your bow looks good Dave. I put the first 25 arrows through mine this evening. Probably thaw out the deer roast for vegi soup on Tuesday, cook Wednesday and then put in fridge till Fri. Everyone knows soups and chillies are better the next day. Looking forward to meeting everyone again. Joe
-
Sounds great Joe. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
With my tummy growling, I thought I should go back through the posts to consolidate food with meals with who's bringing what. Here's what I have:
Friday
Lunch Burgoo by Dave
Dinner, Venison Steaks (Clint)
Baked Potatoes (Dave)
Salad (Dave)
Apple Cobbler (Bill)
Saturday
Breakfast, Sausage and Egg Casserole by Dave
Lunch, Venison/Veggie soup (Balsatech)
Dinner, Pig Roast (Greg)
Soup beans and greens (Dave)
Potato Salad (Daniel)
Dessert (Mrs. Daniel)
Sunday
Breakfast, Bacon and Eggs (Daniel)
Lunch, Leftovers from the weekend.
Let me know if I missed something.
-
Dave, I got lucky on your list for lunch on Sat. And unlucky that I have to work Fri. Don't know how long, might try and book down when I get off. If not I will be there Sat morning. Joe.
-
I Will be down Friday after I get off work , pot of soup and bows in hand.
-
I took a vacation day, so I'll be up Friday morning sometime. I have an old plinker .22 that I shot at Dave's rifle shoot. It will have to suffice. I have a few raw beaver furs if anyone needs one. I rounded up a couple nearly complete projects to scrape on in the bow shop. Can't wait!
-
Next Friday can't get here soon enough. It's been a long time since I've spent some quality time in a bow shop with friends. I was thinking about trying to find an ash tree that isn't ate up with borers to cut and bring down. I figure it will be hard to find ash staves in a few years.
-
If anyone has any good looking wood board pieces (walnut, cherry, coffee tree, etc) 1 1/2" by 4" by 4" or larger, I'd be willing to to do some trading.
-
Greg,
I've got some walnut that might work, I'll bring it. What grain orientation do you need?
Bill
-
Not sure exactly. It will be for turkey calls. Thanks Dbar.
-
Greg, I'll pass your inquiry about needing wood to Brian. He might have some.
-
Thanks Dave. That bow looks sweet! Anyone want to start a wager on me leaving something at Dave's this year? I reckon i have ran off without something every time I've been up there. Phone charger, apron, folding table. You'd think I always left in a hurry, but that's sure not the case.
-
I'll place my bet on a draw knife Greg.
-
Good choice. I hope not! :-X
-
Greg if you don't get what you need let me know and I will try to remember to bring some to the Classic maybe a bit late for this years call but at least you would have some for next year
you fellows have fun , see ya in a few weeks
-
Thanks Guy. I'll let you know.
-
It's not looking very promising on shirts this year. I'm going to try again tomorrow to get ahold of the business that does them. Hope they can do it , but will see.
-
Tracy,
I've got a lot of rocks / old field find points I would like you to take a look at...I'll bring them to see what you think.
DBar
-
Sounds good Bill!
-
Would anybody mind if I brought a FG bow to shoot as well as some selfbows?
-
I don't even know what FG stands for Clint. So it wouldn't bother me if you broke out a slingshot as long as you let me have a go at it.
-
Since I ruined my mop tree bow and broke my 2nd moontree bow I'm bringing a bow that was sent to me a month ago. What a surprise it was didn't even know what it was till I contacted the builder of it. But one thing for certain it's fun to shoot
-
Ok, just figured it out Clint.(FG) Seriously that was stating to bug me, my wife does say I'm a little slow.
-
Clint, I don't care if you bring an FG bow. I have some friends who might show up with bows with training wheels. So, I'll tell you the same thing I'm telling them, "You gotta shoot first so we can try to shoot the nocks off your arrows. I know for a fact that Greg can shoot the nocks off an arrow. Bill and Wapiti, probably can if they tries hard enough. The rest of us could get lucky. But, we'll shoot at the wheelie bow arrows first. haha
-
I'm lost to what does FG stand for
-
Fiber glass.
Looks like its going to cool off a little bit by the weekend. I hope the rain holds off.
-
Anyone coming to the shoot that happens to have any wood arrows of different spines if you could please bring a few for me to shoot. Ihave some 40/45 and some 70/75 but I'm trying to find some correct spines for a few bows. I have field points of different weights I Will bring. Like to find correct spines so I can order some shafts. Thanks Joe.
-
I got 2 of those FG bows but they have fishing reals mounted to them. You know now that would be a fun 3D bow shoot right there. What cha think?
-
I don't have the fishing reels on mine.
-
Oh man! You got to get it set up Clint that bow fishing is fun. I just ain't no good at it.
-
Three more days .....I'm start'n to pack the truck.

-
Bad news for me. I will only be able to be there Friday. My aunt passed away and family will be here Saturday.
-
Sorry to hear that. We will have to fit a weekends worth of bow stuff into one day for you.
I just got 4 packs of deer steaks out of the freezer. I got some marinade ingredients on the way home. I'm going to start setting some stuff out so I don't forget it.
Bill, don't forget about that chainsaw! If I get it running we will have to take it on a test run. I know where there is a nice osage tree really close to Dave's house >:D
-
Dave do you still want me to do bacon Saturday Morning? Also do you mind if I do some grafting? I'm gonna go easy on the bow bench this past year or so has taken the wind out of my sails and it will give someone else a chance to work on something.
-
Sorry to hear of your lost.
Daniel, yep bring bacon. Sure graft till heart is content. :)
-
Joe, you ever think of going with bamboo/tomato stakes. In my limited experience I find them very forgiving of spine weight.
Bow fishing is a blasted--the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Carp should be moving out of the rivers and up into the streams about now. I have a FG fish arrow that I've never tried out of my primitive bows. That a good idea, I would recommend taking the barb out.
-
For you guys coming down Friday morning, I work until midnight Thursday meaning I won't get to bed until 2AM Friday morning. I'll be waking up around 8AM Friday. If you get here before I'm up and stirring around, you know where the workshop is. I'll join you directly :)
-
I took a vacation day, so I'll be up Friday morning sometime. I have an old plinker .22 that I shot at Dave's rifle shoot. It will have to suffice. I have a few raw beaver furs if anyone needs one. I rounded up a couple nearly complete projects to scrape on in the bow shop. Can't wait!
Greg I will take all the raw beaver hides you want to get rid of. My buddy is making a beaver fur Blanket he still likes a few to finish it up.
-
Hoping to get down there around lunch. Gotta drop my son off at 10 so he can go to Florida with family.

These are green furs. Not stretched/dried. Do you have a big cooler or something to keep them cool? They are frozen at the moment. I'll bring all I have. Not sure how many 6 or 8.

Missed out on last years fun .....I'm ready this year....I'll see ya around 10 - 11 Friday. It will be a good needed break from all of life issues.
Thanks Dave for hosting this gathering.

I took a little walk around the backyard this evening and found a hackberry tree and an ash tree that the beetles haven't found yet. I'll try my best to get them cut tomorrow and bring for everybody to split and share. Does anyone else need any supplies or want to do some trading? I've got some stuff set out to bring for Greg and Gutshot.
Dave, do you want me to bring a deer target?
-
I've got my stuff piled up by the door in the garage gonna load it up Thursday evening. Be there early Friday. Might even get a little time in the workshop while Dave sleeps. Unless somebody else beats me there.
-
Gutshot sorry to read about your aunt. Hope your Dad or Mom are ok. It's not easy loseing a sibling.Dave, I haven't tried them . Gutshot gifted me some last year and I have not found the time to put into them.
-
Clint, it's up to you about bringing the deer target. I'm sure we find a place to set it up
I'll be honest, I'm not nearly as prepared as I usually am. But, I'm sure we'll all have a great time anyhow.
-
I'll bring it Dave. I'll throw in a block target to set out by the bow shop in case anybody wants to fling a few test arrows out of a bow.
I cut some trees to bring this morning. I got all lined up on a nice ash tree and right before I started to cut it I though it might be a bad idea to transport it to a different area. We have the borers pretty bad here and I don't want to help spread them. I cut a nice hackberry and it got hung up on a small elm so I cut it to. Should be a good amount of wood for everyone to share. I think we should let Daniel split the elm log ;D

I have a block target or 2 at the range behind the house.
-
What time is everyone showing up tomorrow? I figure I'll be there by 9:00 or so.
-
I plan to get there around 10 or so. I look forward to seeing everyone..
-
I'm hoping to be there around 8:30-9:00 in the morning. I've got the truck loaded down and ready to roll. I can't wait to have a relaxing weekend with you guys.

Just got home from stripper fishing so when I wake up I will load up and be there only 1 hr away

And of course Dave, everything was fantastic, you are a great host. Thanks for having a bunch guys out for the weekend.
We even got some bow work done and some shooting in.......The baseball game put a cool little twist in the 3D shoot.
Glad to put a face with a name, Gutshot, Balsatech and Arrowbuster hope we meet again, you guys have made some fine bows.

Awesome pictures, Guys. Thanks for pulling up my slack as a photographer.
Greg, do just love laying out a bow and hated tillering one? "Cause you left that hickory bow in my workshop. Second year in a row you left a roughed out bow at the Gathering. Or, are just hoping I'll finish this out for you, too?
The only work I did in the shop this weekend was re-attaching some points and cussing them blue feathers that just wouldn't laying in the clamp for me. >:( Thanks, Tracy for taming those rascally blue feathers for me.
After a much needed nap, I went out to the workshop to piddle around a bit. I swear that little workshop has a good vibe about it, especially after friends have been creating primitive art there and leaving their energy in it. Being exhausted from the weekend, I felt the rejuvenated working in the shop this evening where only a few hours ago friends and talented bothers-of-the-bow had followed their passion. Memories of the weekend flooded my soul. While you guys express your honest appreciation of me hosting this event, I an the one who is blessed for the "privilege" to have you in home and my life. Thank you.
The work I did in the shop this evening was to put that little "S" shape osage and red oak kid bow on a caul to heat in some reflex

Very good time I will be there next year if Dave will have me. Great bunch of guys.

Glad you could make it. I hope next year you will be able to stay for the weekend.

Ozzie it was nice to meet you and had a good time splitting them staves with you.
Bill also nice to meet you to. I showed that pic to my girl of the mini feather bow. She loved it.
Joe kydeptf&w nice to see you again and can't wait to see what you make out of that percimon.
Joe Balsatech glad to do some trading with ya wish we could've shot a round of arrows together
Tracy nice to get to talk to you again and Marcus was disappointed that he didn't get to make it to break rocks with you.
Greg thanks for the Osage and my buddy wanted me to tell you he appreciated the beaver furs.
Clint thanks for the trades I've already got a maple down to floor tiller that one of those tiger snakes is going on. Also appreciate you bringing the hackberry logs to split. The Elm well glad to help split it too but dang that was a tough one.
Dave (blue feather) from the Ausage Tribe. Man you know how to put on a MoonTree Gathering like no other. I had a blast! Just wish I could've got to stay the night and spend Saturday with you guys too. Hopefully next year nothing major happens and I can stay for 2 days. Also I'll see if I can't stock up on a bunch of strippers to fry next year for supper. Lol. Thanks again for opening up your nice farm and shop and house to allow all of us to come in and have a great time.
There's a few I forgot to mention just can't remember the names but do remember the faces. Had a good time talking and shooting with you guys too.
UNTIL NEXT MOONTREE

Dad gum it! Certainly not intentional Dave, but not surprising either. Kick it in a corner somewhere.

Now you have another reason to come up in August for the Rifle Shoot. OH, did you get your folding table out of the closet in the carport? Just thought of that one.

Arrowbuster, you're welcome anytime. Thanks for the samples. Greg really enjoyed the small ones. He had hi shirt pockets full of them until about midnight. ;) I sent the large hot sample with Brian. He's putting it in the deer cabin to take the chill off those cold November mornings.

Dave, thanks for being such a great host. I had a great time. Was a much needed break and some much needed laughter ( some of the stuff that came out of Greg's mouth). Fun to hang out with a bunch of good guys that have the same interests. Brian, Tracy, Daniel,Ozzie,Joe,Greg, arrowbuster,Paul thanks for the rawhide I will put it to use. Clint thank you for the stave gifts of Hackberry and Elm.( I'm surprised but those weren't my glasses). And Bill... thanks for that ah-ha moment, you saved me from the frustration of consistently light poundage bows, glad you made it this year. Good Time guys. Chief Blue Feather... I think that names going to stick Dave. Thanks again for Moontree.

It was hard to go back to work this morning. It seemed like the weekend flew by. I can't wait to do it again next year.
Tracy, I like your idea on the areal targets for next year. I wonder if I could make some targets? I could get a sheet of 2" thick foam insulation and cut some circles out. I can paint them to. Do you think that will work? I could glue something to the back for added wait if needed.

I need to dye some blue feathers for flu flu arrows :)

Give it a try if you have time. I've got a couple that were clearances and can pickup a few more in time. Need to get rolling on making some flu flu arrows to shoot. Also thought about the knockoff nerd soccer ball for $3 to do some running rabbit shots or aerials.

It's Friday night and I'm in the workshop listening to Classic Country Request and missing the hustle-bustle of last Friday and the friendship. Clint I now you're missing the music, except for that one song that was just too sad for bow making. :)
