Title: Bamboo/Walnut quiver build/help along Updated / leather added!
Post by: lebhuntfish on January 05, 2016, 11:24:23 pm
For quite some time I've been wanting to make a bamboo quiver. Yesterday my good friend sleek came by on his way home from his family vacation. On his trip he got permission to cut some big bamboo. He gifted me 2 pieces long enough for a quiver.

The bamboo is green/fresh cut. So the first thing I need to do is get it dried out. I researched the best ways to do this without it cracking or checking. I found that the Japanese flute makers use fire to activate the natural resin in the boo. They heat it over a fire slowly until the resin is brought to the surface. Then it is quickly wiped off. Thus creating a natural sealer, just like putting shalack or glue on a stave. What I read stated that, it wasn't a full proof way of keeping it from cracking but it was the most proven way to minimize the possibility of a crack. Then once your done let dry like a stave for at least 2 weeks.

This is what I did, lol.
I first knocked out the center nodes with a stick. Then I dropped an arrow in to see how the "bottom"  node was going to react. Well it punched a small hole, so I went ahead and knocked it out as well. It wasn't going to serve as a solid bottom anyways.

(http://i1335.photobucket.com/albums/w668/lebhuntfish1/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-01/20160104_151959_zpsw0uiti5r.jpg) (http://s1335.photobucket.com/user/lebhuntfish1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-01/20160104_151959_zpsw0uiti5r.jpg.html)

I then began the heating process by starting a very primitive fire. I kept the boo moving to make sure it was heated evenly. With my set up I was able to heat half of the bamboo at a time.  You want to make sure that it doesn't get so hot you can't handle it bare handed. Heat it until it is uniformly wet on the outside. Then heat it until the resin just barely starts to bubble. If you remove it from the heat and the bubbles stop instantly it's ready to wipe on quickly.

Here is both of my future Quivers that are now ready to dry for a few weeks.

You could carve some designs into the boo without affecting the integrity of the boo. Once it gets sunlight the color will fade to light tan. Are you going to put a wood plug in the bottom or is there a node there.

A few things I noticed was,  while heating you can tell when it is getting evenly heated by looking at the cut end of the boo. You can see the depth of the "water" in the thickness of the end of the boo.
Also it is almost ready to wipe the resin off once there is a steady amount of lite steam coming out the heated end.

I should say that I  have never worked with boo in this manner before. I've never made a boo quiver either so any help, thoughts or advice is appreciated.

I will keep this updated as I go along in the build. I'll do my best to post pictures as much as I can. Sorry about the limited pic's so far, it's was hard to take them during that process.
The main quiver I'm using in this build is for a good friend. The second one is mine!

More to come!

Pat,  your always right on with an early reply.
One of the quivers will have an inlay in it. I'm not much of a carver but didn't think about that. I may give it a go on the one I make for myself.
Haven't decided on the plug yet, I'm hoping to make it for a hunting quiver, so I want to make it as quiet as possible.  Thanks.

Looking good so far! I like your primitive fire! LOL!

To make the "plug" quiet, could you glue a scrap piece of carpet onto it? Just cut the carpet to fit inside of the Bamboo, and glue it to the plug.  Make sense?  Might work.... Or not. Lol

The plug ideas are all good. That will probably be one of the first things I do once they have dried out.  I'm also trying to configure a way to "steak it down if you wanted to stand it up at the range of in a hunting blind. I'm thinking maybe some kind of sliding stake attached to the side. Or maybe not, anyone with thoughts on that idea? Patrick

Just put a sling on it, and take a stick, or steel rod with a hook on it.  You could make a folding tripod, with a hook, to hand it on, or a double ended hook, to hook that on something else.  I wouldn't put anything on the quiver itself.  Just my humble opinion.

I should say that it will have a sling on it. Hopefully with an adjustable leather strap. Long enough to throw over your shoulder and if shortened it could be used as a back quiver as well.

Here is an update on the drying of the bamboo. I think I got the resin worked out better on the smaller one. I kinda hoped they would stay green but I figured they wouldn't. The darker green areas have gotten lighter in color. And it has lost some noticeable weight. I'm getting ansie about working on them. Come on and get dried out already!

Patrick - nice looking bamboo, got to say, haven't run into any that big in Mizzura, even in the bootheel bottoms. Will be following this thread. Good luck and keep us posted.

Here's one that I've had for a while, I kept it very simple and just tied a couple of thongs to it. Seems to hold just fine, I'll probably redo the strap one day and make it adjustable. So far I haven't busted the bottom out of this one. I have another but just use it for arrow storage, maybe I should make it into a side quiver.

stick it in a bucket of green dye. maybe it will suck up the green dye water and change its color from the inside?

Don know, it is a grass, when I was a kid we use to use food coloring and soak flowers and stuff like that to change the colors. I have a couple of small pieces. I'll try a few different ways. If they don't work then no big deal. But there's no better time to try something new than when you are doing something you've never done before.

Scrape the rind off and it will accept the dye better.  You could always paint it if dye doesn't work.

Pat I will definitely try that, thanks!

Well guy's, the bamboo seams to be drying out pretty good. But I've run into a bit of a snag,  the smaller piece of boo decided it needed to pop open a pretty sizeable crack. I'm not quite sure how to rectify the situation. My first thought was to give it another week or so to make sure it was dry. Then glue and clamp it together with a strap. Then I thought about cutting it down the middle of the crack with my bandsaw. Then sanding the edges square cleaning out the inside and gluing the it back together.
Do any of you all have any ideas? Maybe someone that has worked with boo more than me has had some experience with repairing cracks like this. Ideas!?

Post by: sleek on January 13, 2016, 10:27:35 pm
Oh man, now that is upsetting. This is why we cant have nice things! Gosh.

Cor real though, if you split it chances are it wont go perfectly back, so you will have to sand it flat and glue the halves together. But, if you do that, may as well glue in a nice walnut accent insert on both sides after splitting it and let the boo turn brown, then dye it red with a matt finish, and a dark leather bottom and strap.

Saw it, don't try to split it.  If you're going to join other wood to it, you want it as straight of a cut as possible.

...but if you want it to just be Bamboo, you can put some glue in the crack and lash it tightly with string.  Almost like serving or a handle wrap.  :)  You could use something like Jute or Sisal impregnated with glue.

Patrick, soak it in warm water. When it softens, put it back together with a wrap until it dries. Then you should be able to glue the 2 separated pieces and wrap til the glue sets.

Yeah it kinda sucks. Pat that's definitely an idea. I think I'm going to cut it down the middle then surface the edges. And glue a piece of Walnut between each side. It should be pretty straight forward. Just got to get a good glue line.

Straight forward..... Dont underestimate how critical getting all 4 cut edges perfectly parallel is. If one is off it will throw them all off. Experience speaking here. A straight line is not enough.

Well it's been a little while since I updated this one. I've been a little busy, and forgot to take some pictures.

I have done a little work on the bamboo. I sharpened a couple scrapers so I decided to scrap the outer sheath and clean them up some. I also found a beautiful piece of Walnut to strip down for gluing in between the two pieces of bamboo. My boo has a bit of sideways bend to it so I cut my stripps of Walnut and kinked the the center of them to match the bamboo. I made a crude jig to help hold the stripps so they can be glued to one side of the bamboo. I don't have pics of the jig but I'll get some soon.

Well it's been a few weeks and I've been busy with bow work. But I had a chance to work on the quiver over the weekend at OneBow's house. He has an awesome jointer and I was able to get a perfectly matched edge on both the boo and the Walnut. Thanks Eric!

First I ran both pieces of the boo through the jointer. They came out nice and flat on the cut edges. Then I needed to surface the Walnut, the pieces are curved a bit so I Eric suggested that I run the Walnut through the jointer while they were in the jig I had made. It worked perfectly. Then we discussed glue, I thought maybe epoxy or maybe even tight bond. Somehow we under up using superglue. It worked really well. I use instabond superglue made by tight bond. It's designed for gluing wood. I use it on everything on my bows,  it takes a little longer to set but it holds solid.

After an hour or so I popped it out of the jig and ran the other side of the Walnut through the jointer. Now I need to clean up the inside of both pieces of bamboo and thin the Walnut a bit then glue the other half together. Then I can finally sand it all down and work on the fun stuff! Here is a few pictures of the progress.

Well I've managed to get some more work done on the quiver. I didn't get a lot of pictures because I kinda got carried away in the process.
But I got the other side glued together and took the overhanging Walnut and sanded it all off on my little drum sander. Then I used my card scraper and cleaned up all the left over sheath on the boo and blended the Walnut and boo together. Then I cut it to the length I wanted, sanded the whole thing down to 400 grit and wiped it with a damp rag then resanded. I used a tack cloth and wiped away all of the dust, then put a couple coats of spray polycrylic on it as an initial finish. I also sprayed the inside really good. Now problem bubby,  the brass would look great but I'm trying to make this without using any metal parts. I think I'm going to braid the strap and attach horn toggles to each end of the strap. Those will hook through loops that are wrapped onto the tube. Anyways that's the thought as of now.

Here is another small update on the quiver.
With me being the detail oriented type person I was having trouble with the way the inside of the tube looked. So I acquired a "flapper"  type sanding disk from work. I made a makeshift extension out of 1/4 inch all thread. I clamp it in my vise very lightly. Then attached the disk to the ole Dewalt and sanded the bajesus out of the inside of the tube. It's not perfect but you can't see the glue runs on the inside and I thinned the Walnut and boo a touch. Then I resprayed the inside of the tube to try and help seal it up some. Here is a pic of what I did.

Pretty slick Patrick. I have gobs of white faux sheep shearling if you want to line the rim and pad the bottom with it. Let me know.

Thanks Pearl! That would be cool if you don't mind? I've been trying to figure out what exactly to use for that part. I'm going to put a thick piece of leather on the bottom as well. I haven't quite figured out the top yet though.

Well it's time for an update. I got a little bit of work done today. Pearly was nice enough to send me a piece of sheep shearling to line the tube with. (Thanks Chris!) I measured the inside circumference and the length I wanted. Measured and marked the shearling and cut it out. I'm no seamstress but I managed to sew it together by hand. It's nowhere near straight but you can't tell in the tube. I test fitted it and cut the crooked end square. Using an arrow I I pushed it in the tube. Then applied some masters leather cement inside the edges as far as I could reach. Using the arrow I worked it around the the glue. Then I glued the outer edge of the top about 1.5 inches down. Then rolled the shearling over the top edge and down about 2 inches. It was a good tight fit and I'm pleased with the results. I'm not sure how I will dress up the edge of the shearling on the outside yet. Any suggestions would be awesome?
I started on the leather cap for the bottom also.  I took a thick piece of leather and traced out the shape of the bottom of the tube on it. Cut it out and glued it to the bottom with masters cement. Now I need to make a leather end cap. I played with some leather trying to wet form it over the end. But I'm not sure how that's going to work wen I roll it over the edge. I might make a 2 piece leather bottom. Any suggestions or pictures would be great?
Here is a few pictures of where I'm at right now.

For the bottom a nice tight fit would be great but in lieu could you punch holes around the edge of the leather and lace it tight?

Thats kinda what I thought about doing if I can get the pucker around the edges to look right if not I will stitch up a two piece bottom like a cup and us that.

Ok guy's,  I've been home sick the last couple of days so I've been messing with the leather portion of this build. I'm pretty pleased as to how everything come out. The only thing is I'm not sure about the position of the top strap. I've already set it in place but with a little work I can move it. I think I need to put it just under the shearling at the top. What do ya'll think? I left the stitching ends long so I could add some decorations if I decide to. I am putting some elk antler buttons on. Any other ideas?
Here's a few pictures. Any advice is welcome!

Thanks a bunch fellas! It has been fun. I've acquired a couple new skills in the process of making this quiver.

Mike,  I messed with it some last night with some arrows in it. I think I might move the top strap up to the shearling edge.

Ed,  after all this work I would love to keep it for myself. But,  I've made this for a very close friend. The best part is that I will get to deliver this in person.
