Very few carnassial teeth, maybe something in the mustelid family...if the back of the skull was longer.

Nothing for reference to figure size, hmmm.

Weasel family.  Of which the wolverine is the largest.

If you have ever held a live one (it was tame, or I would have never survived to tell the tale), you would think you had a hold of a slinky in a fur suit!  Absolutely acted as boneless as Jello!

I guess I'm fortunate that my wife doesn't mind a skull or two around. She's an artist and can see the beauty in them.

Well I love my wife great cook loads of fun treats me better than I deserve but she's definitely not the artist in the family. She allways complains when I "hang another dead thing on the wall" but truth be told after there up she won't let you take them back down and my room is her favorite room in the house.

Maybe we could do another thread to have a contest to identify who pooped in the woods?  (I love the scat identification book "Who Pooped in the Woods")

It's all woodscraft!  Right?

Although that one time I was using my jerky shooter gun and I shot out a curled up dump of venison, spices, and salt and dried it in the dehydrator.  Later that winter I was carrying it in my pocket for late season muzzleloading deer season.  I placed it in some grass and called my buddy, Mikey, over to help with I.D.  Cat, coon, skunk, sasquatch, everything was hazarded and immediately eliminated (PUN INTENDED). Eventually, we were both down on one knee looking closely at it. It was then that I bent over and started to theatrically sniff great sniffs of it.  "Jeez, DUDE! Really?" was all he could say.  I looked up and said it smelled kinda good.  The look on his face was priceless, so I reached down and picked it up, "Here, smell it, it really smells good!" Mikey leans in with skepticism written all over his face, one tentative sniff and he launches a string of four letter words, ending with "Disgusting, gross, aw man!"  (This is the same guy that will walk into a room, drop a silent fart and ask if anyone smells popcorn, then laugh uproariously as someone gets a lungful of poison gas)  I could not help myself, I took a bite of the jerky "turd" and he retched.  Big tough former Marine dry heaved while I died laughing.  Good times.

3 reds, 1 mink, 1 muskrat their really pretty easy to clean up just skin put in pot simmer for a couple hours everything falls off like soup. Hardest part is teeth sometimes fall out and lower jaw splits and has to be glued back together.

Title: Re: Skull of the day
Post by: bjrogg on May 05, 2016, 01:27:23 pm
I was gonna say snapping turtle. I still remember when I was wee lad, riding my tricycle through the mud puddles. There was this big stone that would move when I tried to run it over. I remember my dad taking a stick and that snapper biting and dad picking it right up. Even at that young age I knew that was something I didn't want to poke with my finger.
Title: Re: Skull of the day

It is a small turtle.  The mowing crew at work ran over it and sliced it into several pieces.  I cooked the skull in a bowl on the coffee maker hot plate that night at work.

Here is another.  It has a deformity on its nose.  This one shouldn't be to hard.  The next one might be tougher.

We have a winner!   It was a very aggressive rottweiler that terrorized the neighborhood.   It made the mistake of attacking our livestock.  I never found out who the owner was.  I found the skull in the woods where we left it.  It was to cool looking to leave out there.

Not very knowledgeable about skulls and identification. But I do have this one that I found underneath my workshop floor when I tore it up. It's sort of my shot mascot. The only guess I would have would  be skunk, raccoon, and possum being that usually what I'm evicting out underneath my shed. Any ideas guys I would love to know. I know it's not in the best of shape and most of its teeth are missing
Title: Re: Skull of the day

It's not a possum.  They have a longer nose.  I'm guessing raccoon.

This is a S.W.A.G. I don't think teeth look right but seems like they start deep in skull like rodents. Bugs bunny and a Ginnie pig.

Nope.

The teeth are more predator shaped than rodent.

Thier shape of skull reminds me of raccoon but I don't think so. I'm kinda thinking cat maybe cougar and bobcat but seems like teeth would be more needle shaped.

Winner!

The big one is a bobcat.  I found the smaller one in the woods.  I believe it is a domestic cat based on the size and shape.

How about an elk

The Dancing Bear is correct.  It's a cow elk.  The canines are their "ivory" teeth.

I've only got a couple left.  This is not the same as the skull I posted earlier today.

Besides a few in the freezer I think that is about all the different skulls that I have.  This is the last one that I have to post.

All of my friends that hunt Africa tell me the Warthog is the easiest and cheapest animal to shoot over there, about $150. They can't do damage like Boar hogs or sows here, those big tusk are dull and get in the way. if you look at the bottom tusk you will see the sharp ones.

I guess the last 3 or 4 skulls might have got a bit jumbled together. The answers are I posted a Giant Land Sloth, then Osage posted some kind of a bat, then I posted a Saber Tooth Tiger, and Pat posted what I believe is a Woolly Mammoth. This was a fun tread if anyone has any of their own skulls please feel free to continue this game. It was fun playing with you all.

If you really cannot stand to walk the earth a day longer without collecting at least one really freaking cool skull, Google "Bone Clones".  All the great apes, including numerous and various human skulls, anteaters, gila monsters, and more.  The sabertooth skull is a mere $309, if you have that burning a hole in your pocket.

Nah, clones made from castings of actual artifacts.  They are pretty good.  I had a USF&W agent looking over my eagle skull pretty darn close once!  Resin cast: $130. Real one: $25,000 fine and up to 5 years on the pokey.
