Does anyone know where you can cut wood in California? I don't need to cut down a tree but a branch of considerable size would be good. Is there a permit that allows someone to cut in national Forrests or is this only for dead wood? I'm wondering as there is not much BLM land in CA and there are many useful bow woods near me that are in national forrests.

Call the office and ask.

There is a ton of blm land here in sunny Calif, tgere is buckthorn some osage that is hard to find, juniper incense cedar even some yew. Lots of oak if you can find some that's not dead from oak fever, madrone locust and others. You can get it but getting permission and or permits and gas and all unless you get juniper that is fairly easy to find you are money ahead to get on the trade page and see what you can get

What do you mean osage is located at Buckthorn. Where is buckthorn?
So besides BLM land (and private property of friends) is there any other places you can cut wood at?
-
I said there is buckthorn and osage
-
I think I have heard of osage in CA but I never really found out wherever was at. Where do you find it?
-
Where are you located
-
I'm located in the San Francisco Bay Area
-
I guess that explanes the user name😀
-
I'm in the hills behind the university I saw some huge juniper trees, as well as some kind of oak
-
Juniper branches will make a good bow
-
This is a good thread, I have been wondering the same
You mean... juniper self bows?
Apparently bamboo backing them can work well, according to 'Utah Bowyer' from paleoplanet
-
Yeah...I'm not very creative when it comes to pseudonyms so I just thought "Hey, Marin was a chief, I'll haut choose that"
And yes, I know of he wood but are sure you can cut it in those areas? I'm just curious how you can tell where it is legal to cut and not legal to cut?
-
You have to make some calls maybe get a permit, or find a landowner that will let you trim up some trees.
-
I look around at laws. But where did you say you found osage?
-
I know a guy that said he finds Osage around Sacramento.
-
I didn't😈
-
The guy probably means that he found planted Osage. It is no doubt imported to just about anywhere it will grow to act as a wind break or whatever other uses. You can find just about any tree anywhere it can grow because people are always planting based upon what they want compared to what grows naturally in that area.
-
No....
The guy means, that the staves he makes his osage bows from, were harvested in the Sacramento area.
-
Traxx, we used to have a lot of osage in orange county in southern Calif. I used to run my bird dogs on abandon ranch properties before I was into bow making. I saw hedge apples all the time. I never bothered to look for the trees they came off of but I can say they were pretty common. The same property that Saddleback college is on is one of them. There is still some small open spaces left over there, I have been tempted to go check it out.

Thanks,
This is really good information. It will be extremely useful. So far, the only wood I could find was California Bay but hopefully I can find (and cut)others too.
-
Just go deep into the hills and find some oak or juniper, and cut yourself a "walking stick"
-
Great idea! ;D

A good quality folding saw is discreet as well as useful... ;)
