The goal with creating this simple temporary lean to camp was to spend some woods time with my young Grandson making a camp out of materials on the property. Cost was zero and the time we spent together making it was priceless! Framework is made of mostly dead branches. We did cut two small live saplings for the ridge poles. I did not want to strip bark off several large trees for the roof so we substituted a old tarp from our wood pile for the roof. The tarp was then covered with several inches of leaves. We built some benches from some scraps I had, dug a fire pit, put up some crude shelves and buried a hidden cache filled with some items we scrounged or made. The sign we hung up is a old time Hobo symbol meaning a safe place to camp. Now I know to some it may seem crude but it was a fun little project to do with him and we now have a Woods bum Camp to hang out at this Summer.

First picture is the view from the lean to
Second picture is of the roof.
Third picture is a view of the lean to from the bottom of the ravine (blends in well so I circled where it is)

That looks really cool. Great job getting your grandson involved.

Way cool, Brian. Time in the wilds with kids is the best. Way to pass it on! 8)

you two did a great job.
fun times will be had.

Really cool. I remember building lots of "forts" when I was a kid, they were always special places. They would have been even more special if my Grandpa would have shared the experience with me.

Brian,
The shelter looks great!
I'll bet two backwoodsmen like Michael and yourself could spend a night or two in it very comfortably.

Great project for an outing with your grandson and it is a cool looking camp, the hobo symbol pretty cool as well.
If I had some land I'd have to copy your idea and take my grandson out and spend the day doing the same. Thanks for posting this.
-
That is VERY cool! Not to mention a memory your grandson will carry with him for life.

Only "kids" make forts in the woods. Good job staying young despite whatever tomfoolery happens when you look in the mirror.
I want to do a half face shelter like that in the woods for winter muzzleloading deer season camp! A real longhunter adventure. Thanks for feeding the inspiration, brother!

If you put it in the right spot you could get your buck while still in your sleeping bag.

Thank You Everyone for the kind words. When my Grandson and I started building it, he called it Papa's, when we were done working on it for the day, he was calling it our's. DC, I have killed deer very close to where it stands.

Ha! Right there! Did you see that??? Did YOU SEE???
A lesson learned, a great lesson. Involvement creates ownership in the results. More of these activities and he will learn to be the guy that is behind the wheel of his life and driving it, not just a passenger wondering where the h*** this is going and why!

Lean to's are the best way to camp. Good job.
