First picture is ash i believe...the second im not sure. Couldnt get a great picture of the leaves but they are larger single lobed leaves....similar in shape to the ash. Is it a type of hickory? I didnt cut the second.....yet!

Yes. Some of our bitternut looks about like that. Where are you located?
-
near albany ny pat
-
Don't break your kids little red wagon 😃
-
The second picture looks like the trunk of a young shagbark hickory.
-
Basically that trees days are numbered!!!
-
Our older bitternut can start looking like that and young shagbark that I am familiar with often looks a bit shaggier as a small tree.
How large is this tree in diameter?
There is quite a bit of variation in how bark characteristics develop.
-
Maybe 6 to 8" at the base

Got the ash all sealed up....probably go after that other tree soon. I think I was testing that little red wagon too Gut...especially with my helper hitching a ride!!

Those staves look so smooth in texture. Nice find!

Bark practically jumps off em right now!!
-
i seal em with elmers glue then hit the ends with black laquer.
-
Nice haul! Looks like you have a good helper too!

Did the bark come off in the round? It would make a nice quiver if it did.
