Title: New forge
Post by: osage outlaw on July 23, 2016, 12:13:35 am
A while back I made a simple forge out of a semi brake drum that DLH gave me at Moontree this spring.  I used heavy rebar for the legs and some thick scrap steel to cover the holes in the drum.  I used some car exhaust pipe for the air inlet.  The only thing I had to buy for this project was a $10 hair dryer and $2 worth of hose.  Greg Sulfridge and his son are at the house for the weekend so we decided to test it out.  I can't find any coal in my area so I use osage scraps.  Cutting and welding on that thick steel was tough.

Starting to wonder if you are allergic to store bought.  Build your own woodstove, build your own camper, build your own forge!  Way to go, you make the rest of us look pretty weak!

Nice use of truck brake drum Osage. Can't wait to see what you make I'm thinking some pretty cool stuff. I know that thin wallet, if it wasn't for my drivers license it wouldn't pay to carry mine.

How does the hair dryer work with the heat on the tubing?  I hear all you have to do is cut the wires to the heating element. ???
Would that work?

It works good until you cut the wires going to the fan motor  (http://rabbittalk.com/images/smilies/ges_slap.gif)

Me too Matt.  I've been messing around with it and gathering supplies for the last year or so.  I'm hoping to start hammering some steel this winter.  I just don't have much desire to use a forge in 94 degree heat and 80% humidity.
