Title: Choctaw style replica
Post by: sleek on August 04, 2016, 04:34:57 pm
I think its a type of elm. Cant recal. It took 2 inches of set and i will be heat treating the belly now. I know you cat repair crushed wood fibers but heat still helps.

Anyways its 55@28 and has decent cast. Nothing to write home about but still a very viable hunter. I will be doing a hemp cordage handle wrap on it and some sort of finish, not certain what yet.

It has some sideways bend to it that puts the string off the handle. I have made and shot many bows like this and never had a prroble. Just let the bow sit in your hand so the string lines up with the handle. I have also seen images of older native bows built this way.

In my opinion sleek when it has sideways bend like that one does and makes the string off the handle. over time just keeps getting worse.

Nice bend Sleek. Elm is a very good bow wood. IMO  I would try to get some of that lateral bend out...and you can temper it again while you're at it.

And of course a photo of my gorgeous self pulling it back.

Heat treating this bow did wonders. It still has its set but is much more snappy now. Feels like it shoots much harder. I just need to put on the handle wrap and a finish now. I am considering boiling up some osage dust into a brew, then condensing it down to a thicker mix and applying that as a finish.

Looks like a stiff spot mid limb of the upper limb.

Patrick

Oh and the outer thirds need to bend more!!!   >:D >:D >:D   :P

Thanks hunterbob. Its good to be able to work on bows again after being gone for a while.

Pat, my son took that pic and due to his height difference and that of the limb, I believe its an illusion. I put it back on the tree and pulled it a few times. It seems to be bending just fine. I will get more images of it after I get a finish and handle on it.

Nice tiller on that one. Is it true you use a large knife for everything on your bowmaking?

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Dictionary, Kinda. I jave made many bows from cutting the tree to cutting the nocks and finish tiller with just a knife. This bow was done with a knife 80%, I just used a belt sander to remove my tool marks and shape the handle ( its faster but I have done it without ). Every bow I make however is at least 75% just knife though.

What knife are you doing all of this with?

I was using a K-Bar. But I have designed a knife for this purpose specifically.

My guava bow has also got a sideways bend to it, but it's been holding just fine! Shoots great too, I wouldn't be worried. Nice work! 👍

nice tool sleek, the sideways bend,, it kinda straightens out when you draw it,, I have some extreme examples,, I have left them as is,, and if you couldn't see it, you would not know when you shoot it,, I think if shoots well,, you are good to go,, :)

my hornbow has similar sideways bend I've been wanting to remove, once I bent the siyah the opposite way trying to correct it, it seems to have gotten more handshocky... I think it was ok before?

If there's no handshock, I guess you're good  :P

So choctaw bows were stiff handled? I like the string nocks/notches

From what I have seen thats the general style of bow they made. There is no handshock and the bow shot fine before and after fixing the sideways bend.
