Last spring a turkey hunter from Michigan drove all the way out to the Black Hills to hunt birds. While he was here, he found a skinny slab of granite and a weathered knothole from a fire killed pine tree.

Dave pulled into camp late in the afternoon and about five minutes later I had him onto a flock of birds and we put 'em to bed. That boy does know how to sweet talk a turkey!

I tagged out early in the week. But I also cheated, using a Benelli and a load of Hevi-shot. Ten yards and I hit him with every single pellet and the plastic wad.

Hey Smurfalogobbler, you know him! He posts here ad Tattoo Dave. The only thing I like better than his calls is his company in camp.

Unique is certainly an apt description. Unlike most turkey calls that are arranged in perfect geometric shapes, this one is random and flows according to it's nature (and yes, I chose that word specifically). The stone was sawn, but in a rather random shape and hard enough stone that reshaping or reducing would be pretty difficult without some very specific tools. That meant he had to really get creative with his choice of knothole. Dave asked us to kick around some deadfalls to find something that might work, but I had no idea that it would come back to me.
And there lies the pressure it puts on me for next spring: This means I have to go right back to the spot where the knothole was found and call in a turkey RIGHT THERE! Well, considering that we had three flocks roosting within half a mile of the campsite, this is definitely within the realm of possibilities.
Whadya think Tattoo Dave? Would it be poetic to call a bird into that little open spot north of the camp rocks, or what?

Thanks for the kind word John! That piece of granite was calling birds already when I was there. I enjoyed making that call, not your ordinary call. It belongs in The black hills!
That sounds like a challenge I'd happily accept. There's a big fat Tom there that Iowabow(John), and myself worked for almost an hour. He needs to die. Or maybe that stupid little jake that busted me at less than 10 yards before I could pull the string back. I've got a bone to pick with that little bastard!
