Been busy working up some shoot shafts, here's a dozen dogwood shafts that I made for a trade, and another dozen I'm working on for myself, all hand planed down to 11/32". The second set is a dozen shafts of a dozen different woods, thought it would be pretty cool to make a completely mixed set if I can get them close in weight and spine. They're sourwood, silky dogwood, arrowwood viburnum, witherod viburnum, sweet shrub, buffalo nut, chinese privet, bush honeysuckle, hazelnut, salt cedar, multiflora rose, and white ash.

Dang! you been busy. Me too I'll post mine tomorrow.
-
you must have the patience of a saint :) nice work
-
wow those are nice!
yo could be lazy like me and use shoots. i use rose shoots
-
Hey, I want a dozen ;D. Man them are lookin good! Wish I could get em that straight.
-
these look like well matched cedar shafts; its trully amazing what You can do with shoots!
-
The mixed set still needs a final straightening, sanding, and tweaking. It's a job planing them down, but not too bad when you get the hang of it, and it's enjoyable work. Got a bunch of cane to straighten and work up, too.
-
What kind of plane do you use Steve?
Otoe
-
A little bitty Stanly "thumb plane" or trim plane. You can get 'em at Lowe's for 7 or 8 bucks and they last forever.
-
Nice work Hillbilly, thats a lot of work.

Lots of patience, but like you said enjoyable work. Nice job, be careful to shoot only soft material. Kenneth
-
Thanks, guys. Kenneth, that's why I like to use hardwood shoots-most of them will bounce off trees and rocks and keep on ticking.
-
Nice Steve. Pretty amazing getting 12 different shoots to be a matched set of shafts. :o 8) I have some red twig dogwood shoots from Germany I've almost got completed, some sourwood shoots scraped, bundled and drying and an assortment or other shoots in all stages of drying. Also I collected a good mess of river cane from my personal stash. ;D
I've gotta get a set completed for Pappy's shoot. It would be embarrassing :-[ showing up with a mismatched set of cedars with a few canes thrown in. :o Pat
ps. what ya needen in trade for that set! ;D 8)
-
why do you guys keep setting the standards so high, nobody else can reach them? ;D i haven't even started straitening shoots and i'm frustrated already ;D
nice job there, hillbilly. but nut surprising, after seeing the arrow you gave me at the 10th classic.

"A little bitty Stanly "thumb plane" or trim plane. You can get 'em at Lowe's for 7 or 8 bucks and they last forever"
bought my for $8 two years ago, after hundreds of arrows still as good as new; excellent tool!
-
Thanks, Marius. Pat, I haven't gotten 'em completely matched yet, we'll see how it goes. The dogwood ones are already traded, they're in the care of the USPS at the moment. BTW, do the leaves on your patch of cane turn brown or drop in the winter?
-
hillbilly I'm tired of planing myself and I did'nt even do half of what you did. those shoots look great.
-
Yes Steve. All of the leaves turn brown(tan) and most fall off. It does make it easier to see the good canes while gathering them as I'm usually on my hands and knees crawling through the patch. Pat
-
That's what I was wondering. I knew your cane was different from the typical stuff-if it's deciduous, it's A. appalachiana, hill cane. It doesn't usually get that big. I gotta snarf me another clump or two next year. >:D
-
Holy cow! The term "inspiration" still seems to fal short ;).
-
That's cool Steve. A newly identified native cane and I already have some! 8) I guess I am special like my Mom told me. ;D She always liked me best. ::) Pat

Everyone likes you best Pat, you were the only six year old with a beard ;D!

Those are awesome shafts. Jawge
-
Thanks again, guys. Jawge, if/when I ever get any of my stuff up to the caliber of yours, I'll be a happy hillbilly. :)
-
Hillbilly, I just started trying to do the same. Are you using a jig to hold the shafts while planing etc? Awesome shafts! Thanks, Tracy
-
Man those are looking good Steve! You're going to be a well armed hillbilly! ;D
Alan
-
Thanks, Alan. Tracy, I use my knee. :) One of these days when I'm not lazy I'll make me one of those little fancy boards with a v-groove in it. If the shaft is really big, I'll lay it on the workbench and plane some of the overall size down before sizing it.
-
Beautiful work on those Steve, got me thinking baout my bundles been setting for over a year now, guess it's time to get started on them. Steve
-
Dang son, you been workin those late hours. You wanna watch my boy for a weekend so I can get some work done? :)
-
Ahhh. The joy's of Parenthood ;D
-
Jonathan, not likely heh heh. I just spent twelve years getting mine to the point that he's semi-housebroken and can feed and water himself. :) Send him on over when he's big enough to run a weedeater. ;D
