Title: Deep Purple Falls

It was cool enough after sunset to have dinner
on the western deck. One glorious evening.
Before I got the first bite of my chicken breast---

For those that are not aware of Night Hawks,
please check the evening skies.
These phenomenal aviators are a sight to see.
I wish I had my old SLR

I have always known them as bull bat and whip-poor-wills. They have sung to me all my life.

Thanks for appreciating these neat creatures.
I wonder if the Bull bat term comes from the fact
that we see them in the evening? I hope I see more.
Folks around here are pretty ignorant of them.
I have seen them by the hundreds just kind of hovering.
Mostly they are zooming by, headed in the same direction.

I grew up calling them bull bats also, we don't have near as many around here as we did when I was a kid. I always found it pretty cool when they buzz you, I like the sound they make. I watch a lot of the Alaska / survival shows and they seem have them chirping in the back ground on some of them quite a bit. Ed

I always thought I loved their calls at night. Was camping one weekend and one decided to perch in the tree above my tent. First couple hours was ok. After a full night and also the next two nights I started to question my liking their calls. Them boogers are loud up close.  :o
