Here is a few pics of my boy Aaron making his first hand drill coal, we managed a fire also. I helped a bit. But I think he'll be doing it alone by age 2.

I cant get my 2 year old to sit that long unless hes asleep ;D Joel
-
At that age, I probably would have put it in my mouth. ;D Nice to see kids and adults doing things together that doesn't involve an on/off switch.

He's a natural ;D!

Cute little booger. Looks like he's just about ready for his first bow! Frank
-
seems like dad had fun, too...!?

I was definitely having fun, still smiling about it. As long as we are outside he is happy. Fishoonah- you are right he is ready, he picks up sticks in the yard and keeps saying " bow bow bow bow"
-
I got tickled with that one - makes me homesick :'(.
-
Very cool,starting um young. :)

Cute little guy! Be careful though! He may decide the furniture makes a great hearth board. ;D

It's like I told my wife. I'll be really upset if he sets the house on fire when he gets a little older. But I'll have to laugh if it was started with a hand drill.

;D ;D ;D ;D

;D He looks like he is a natural.

Yeah, just be sure to keep an eye on him, and make sure he understands, it is only for outside, when you are around, and not in the closet! I think I would have started him on Bows, first, and then when he is old enough to understand power of fire, and devastation it can cause, and then teach him various methods of fire making. Cute Kid though. Just be careful with him at that age, curiosity, and a new skill can get the best of any of us.
I've been on too many fires, started in the closet, by very young kids playing with lighters, and matches.

Passing it on brother... way to carry on the spirit of the old ways... hawk a/ho

You should see him now. He is almost 20 months old. He picks out a board, puts the drill in the hole and spins it by himself for a little bit. It is so awesome. I can't help but laugh everytime he does it. ;D
-
Good... Next year he will be making bows.
-
at least ya dont have to worry about burning the house down.... takes too long and by then you will have had a chance to find out what he is up to..... way better and more fun than playing with matches
-
I think that the kid was showin you how- to; come on, fess up !
-
That is cool. It will be interesting to see what he is like when he grows up. Someone we would all like Im sure. Great Kid :)

My boy is almost 2 yrs old now. He has his own setup. Horseweed on ERC sapwood. He can spin it on his own for a bit but I think it will be a while til we see some smoke. ;) I'm hoping he can get coals by the time he is 5 yrs old.
