Title: Took a hike in the mountain
Post by: Zuma on October 04, 2016, 09:06:30 pm
I took my dirt bike up the ridge where
an old jeep trail follows the river 300
feet below.  ??? I got up passed all the gravel
and started walking up the eroded trail.
Pics below.

Dang, that is really cool. You think that is an old hunting trail or a camp on top?

I think both Lyman. I'm thinking you have been around this block yourself. O:)
It would be the only easy way up or downstream on this side of the river.
I didn't post the flakes I found. Well just the large jasper one. Plenty flakes
means sittin down for a spell. I also found fixed charcoal deep in the trail.
Quartz, chalcedony, jasper, quartzite, gray and black chert and a tad of
rhyolite from the fall line. The mountain is pure Sandstone, so all material was imported at least a  mile, up to 70.
The view of the wide river bottom land on the other side in a boreal landscape
would have been spectacular and useful for hunting large animals.
Woodland buffalo, elk, deer and 300 pound beaver

I love hunting artifacts Don.
You'll have to come up to hunt some arrowheads on the farm sometime.

That reminds me of a story, my dad is a long time civil war reenactor and he got the opportunity recently to participate in an archaeological metal detector survey at one of the battlefields here in Fl (don't recall which one), which is exceptionally rare that this sort of thing is allowed anymore. They found all kinds of cool things including an explosive cannon shell! Everyone was really excited about the shell and everyone was passing it around checking it out until someone had the insightful thought "maybe we shouldn't be playing with unexploded ordinance!" lol. At that point they all backed away slowly and called the bomb squad, lol. They drilled it and drained it and declared it safe etc.

That would be cool Rob.
Catch a trout or two, too. 8)

Urufu, It's funny about the ordinance.
I took my detector up where I found the points today.
Perfect place for a redoubt. Not a hit >:(
