Title: WARNING!!!
Post by: Pat B on October 17, 2016, 11:39:22 am
Do not put any direct links on the PA website unless they are a sponsor. Doing so could get you banned from PA!!!
Title: Re: WARNING!!!
Post by: amateurhour on October 17, 2016, 12:22:52 pm
Why?

If I find a good deal on fletching at 3rivers and they're not a sponsor here why can't I post that link?

I've never heard of that level of moderation on a forum before.

"any direct links", even to non-commercial sites, random facebook stuff, youtube videos?

I wouldn't ask "why?" fellas. Its a looooooong standing PA rule, simple as that.

why

Not sure if that was supposed to be funny, or you're just that kind of kid.
Title: Re: WARNING!!!

Or both.
Problems with authority, always want to know the reason for everything... don't know if I'll ever leave my rebellious teenager phase.
If it's just direct clickable links that are a problem, and I can just wrap them in code tags so they aren't clickable, then that's fine with me. Unless I'm extra feisty. ..nah. Usually, given enough terms, it's not hard to search for things either.

I guess they want to avoid spam and "free advertising". Either way, I prefer if the rules are clear..

Loon it has been stickied at the top of every section forever. Simply look at the top under rules and they are all outlined

I mean, about exactly what kind of links we can post. It hasn't been made extremely clear. But I guess I'll just put code tags around all my links..
Title: Re: WARNING!!!

Here, see if I can make it very simple; if you post a site and there is an add for selling Ford Trucks you can pretty much guess that they aren't a paid Vendor listed in the Classifieds at the bottom of this site. If they are listed in the magazine in the back as a paying vendor and you have a link on You Tube that's not listed in the Magazine,, then it's a pretty good bet it's going to get deleted and you'll get a warning.

And the rules are easy to understand, if it says don't do it then it's a pretty good bet the owners don't want you to do it. :)

It's quite simple, Primitive Archer is a business and there is no business in the world that provides free advertising

I don't understand what is so difficult about this.  All you have to do is delete the www.    Or you can put a space in the link to disable it.  If someone is capable of joining this forum they should be capable of figuring out how to go to the website that you posted.  I'm a member of other forums that have much stricter rules than PA has.  Not posting a direct link shouldn't be that big of deal.  I can understand newer members not reading the rules and making a mistake.  That's going to happen every now and then.
Title: Re: WARNING!!!
Post by: Marc St Louis on October 17, 2016, 09:39:59 pm
The main problem here is that a large number of new members just don't bother reading the rules to this board
Title: Re: WARNING!!!
Post by: osage outlaw on October 17, 2016, 09:44:22 pm
Can you add that to the form to sign up as a new member?  Make a box that they have to check saying they understand about not posting direct links?  Then they can't say they didn't know about it.

Crap, Don, it's in the post directly above this one Rule #6.

"their" products, not someone else's products that they're not affiliated or anything with  >:D  :o

Linking to a shopping site is a lot more obviously spammy/advertising-like than just a youtube link.. then there's discretion of interpreting the rules, blah blah, it's fine whatever. I will wrap code tags around all my links from now on, should not be a problem..

Not questioning/poo-pooing the rules by any means, but I do wonder if the owners realize the lack of links will have a strong negative effect on search rankings.

That is exactly what's stupid about this rule......No links to outside unpaid advertisers I get that, but to put a space, or delete www what kind of random BS is that? You moderators need to make ALL links off limits...hell of a lot easier to understand. I have been on here forever, and I will readily admit.....At times I don't get this rule......I could point out examples to moderators. Not on this thread though.

Brian if you paid for advertising and someone posted a link to someone selling the same stuff you were cheaper you'd probably get pissed. It would be easier for the Mod's just to enforce the CEO's rule and be done with the whining, or one of you guys buy the magazine and change the rules.
Title: Re: WARNING!!!

Just eliminate all links and be done with it. Somehow I have found a way to never use one and get my point across clearly. 11,000 posts later.

I have no problems with this rule and like PD said, you can give the info without providing a clickable link.  Heck, another bow making site I like won't even let you use the word "ebay."  Can't see how this rule is a burden.
Title: Re: WARNING!!!

I personally like the rule. There's much more emphasis on making your own stuff instead of buying a bunch of stuff. One of the few places on the internet not filled with links to go to who knows what. Anyone Savvy enough to be on the internet nowadays is more than capable of copying and pasting in Google search.

Again make it simple, No links. I totally understand and agree with your statement......But to butcher a link is childish, it still achieves the same results against the advertiser. That reminds me of the police telling you how to use technicalities against the police themselves...don't make sense to me.

I personally (if I were a advertiser) Would care less about links.......Unless it were to DIRECT competitors of archery related supplies, not Ford trucks. Just about any link will lead you to advertisement......thought that was the whole reason for websites in general, even chat websites.

Quite frankly Brian I have always thought that just removing the www was a bit of a lame way to fix the problem, you would have to be an idiot not to know how to fix that.  It's always been a thorny subject

Someone sent me an email suggesting using code to stop links, have no idea what he was talking about

I made the mistake of trying to help someone out on here by posting all the info I could about where he could get some really nice bamboo. shafts.  I got spoken to on here like I was some kind to 10 year old because I didn't, as one of the moderators put it, "READ THE RULES". Well he was right, I didn't read the rules, made  a mistake, an honest on at that and I went and read them, top to bottom.

Bottom line is I now send all info on items available by PM.

At least Pat addressed this issue with some civility.

Yep, JEB, that was me and you let me know it and I apologise. But, that was after a long episode, like now,  that is going on again. A few that just want to pick rules apart when it is pretty simple, common sense.
Title: Re: WARNING!!!

Mr. Parker I don't remember the apology but if your last post was it, we move on.

But, I think in most cases there is no "intent" to break the rules but to help people out and it is done in an anxious way that rules slip their mind.  That is what this site is all about for the most part, helping like minded people make things, obtain materials and instruct folks on how to do things. This site is a club with many very talented people who go out of their way to share their knowledge.

We do want to be helpful. But rules be rules. And men take full responsibility for their mistakes and move on. I haven't seen many on this site who don't fit into that category. And the ones who pass the buck don't stick around anyway.

Maybe so but the original intent of this site, the real reason it was created by PA Magazine, was to be a place for subscribers of the magazine to come and talk about and ask questions about the magazine, be it articles or other questions.

Whatever you guys decide is great, just confused on what links are "good links" and those that are off limits. It's an archery magazine, a business......I run one myself, and would not want someone to step on my toes, by accident, or on purpose. Your dealing with the general public that wants to get to A-Z as fast as possible. I would think Simplicity to be the most effective solution......02    And why in the heck won't my Icons work?

Just to clarify.  I have had several people ask me if such and such a link was okay and as long as it doesn't have any archery related commercial content then I say it's fine.  If the site is selling archery or hunting related items then it's best to ask or check the list of advertisers

Anybody that would argue with the rules on this site, especially if they are not a subscriber to PA, is out of line. I feel like I just read a pissing match and it kinda made me mad. If you don't like the rules, stay off the site. That seems pretty easy to me. This is not your normal site. Lots of us know each other personally and the people at PA and respect their wishes. If you don't subscribe to PA and want to be on this site, you gotta respect the owners wishes regardless if you agree or not. Links to videos not selling things are good, if items are being sold on the link, not good. Like it or leave us to our rules. sheesh, dp

I believe I have every issue  of P.A. magazines. It is probably the best traditional/primitive archery magazine I have ever come across.  Been shooting a bow for 60 years so I have seen a few come and go.
