Had a guy want me to make three bows for him. This is for his father. Hackberry static 64" ntn 52# @ 28" draw. No reflex just bent in some hooks. This bow seems to be really fast. Not a world record breaker just real fast. I forgot how much I like a heat treated piece of Hackberry!
-
That's sweet Jon! I really like the FD pic. That curve is just so nice and even. Do the hooks open up some? It looks like they might be working a little bit in the FD.

Good looking curves!
-
Maybe a little Eric. I tried to thin them a little more than I usuall would. Hard to know when to stop sometimes.
-
That's a very nice looking hackberry bow. I roughed one out a while back. I might copy that style. Very nice work Jon.
-
Sweet Jon.Very nice job.
-
Great looking bends. Love hackberry
-
Nice bend for a rigid >:D

Very cool, great work Jon

That is one beautiful looking bow! Awesome profile!

Clint that is a good design for hackberry IMO. Heat treat it
Thanks for looking guys
Nice bend for a rigid >:D
rich
Rich you talking about the bow or myself :P
-
I really like the looks of that one, excellent work Jon.
-
Nice hackberry bow. I really like the bends.
-
Father of the guy is gonna be one happy feller. Bud, you're doing some cooool stuff!
-
Bows like that are the ones that do seem to break world records at the flight shoots. Very nice job on that one. I always enjoy working with hackberry.
-
Thanks for chiming in fellas.
Mike you taught me real well....
-
Beautifully done. I've never worked with hackberry, but now I'm super intrigued. I heard it bends like clay.
-
Dang! You got that one hooked up!
-
Hook 'em horns !!!! Nice looker there Jon
-
Great looking bow Jon. I am curious on how wide you left the limbs at their widest point.
-
Bent stick I think I roughed them in at 2" at the widest point. Prolly finished a little narrower.
-
Great looking bow, beautiful hooks and tiller looks spot on, it has to be a shooter. Nice work. :)

That's a nice one, Jon. Great tiller job.
-
Nice bow Jon, that's my kinda bow
-
Sweet looking bend on this one too. I like the hooks on that baby.
-
Thats a beauty for sure Jon...is the back left natural with a little cambium? Ive yet to try a static myself.
-
Yes I left a little cambium for that mottled look. Thanks for commenting.
-
Very nice bow Jon. I too like the hooks. But that donkey is my favorite he just keeps photo bombing your pics!😆
-
That's it right there. Sweet looking bow...gotta give hackberry another go in the future.
-
I love that unstrung profile, Jon. I'll have to pull out my Hackberry I got from the Clintster, it's cured.
-
Nice looking bow Jon. i like how big you can make hackberry while still being a fast shooter.
-
Yep, that bow you made for me Dave is very quick and hard hitting.
I think that some folks underestimate how good a wood hackberry is.
-
Looks perfect! Very nice bow.
-
Its light physical weight makes it a snappy shooter. The temper stiffens it up for a quick reaction time to boot. Hackberry can get very "wet noodle" like when not tempered.
-
I know you didn't chase a ring on this one Jon, but maybe you or someone else can tell me what it's like to chase one. Good light I'm assuming
-
I have done it a few times. Its not that bad, but you need great lighting and not fluorescent. You cant feel variations in your knife, you have to see 100% of the time.
-
Oh Yes, that is nice, and now after having a few tempered hackberry bows under my belt, I have come to appreciate this wood.
-
Right on, thanks Chris. I have had some very nice hackberry with the bark still on for several years now. Just haven't gotten around to it yet. This bow gives me good incentive to get started.
-
Aaron chasing a ring is doable. Get right out in the open sun. I actually rolled the edge on an old draw knife to be able to "feel" the early wood better. Hackberry sucks without a good heat treat.
-
A HEAVY toast? What color are we looking for? I've heard it smells like popcorn. I like toast and popcorn
-
Aaron I use pine resin during heat treating. Heat up the wood and start applying the resin. You can do a major tempering without scorching the wood.
-
That's a looker Jon. Very nice.
-
I always like to give hackberry a plug when I have the opportunity. Hackberry is the most bendable of any american wood using steam. It will bend like a pretsel. One time I tried to build a bow that would uncoil as it was drawn. I failed at the bow but hackberry allowed me to make the curves I needed.
-
I know what you mean Steve. It grows straight and usually around 8-10 feet up before a limb in my experience. I'm sure people were aware of hackberry as bow wood before me but when I started using it I had not met anyone that knew it was bow wood.
-
beautiful bow... love me some hackberry.
-
That is a very nice bow.Great job. God bless
