Title: BBQ tiller check
Post by: Lee Lobbestael on January 21, 2017, 04:28:01 pm
Hey guys can you help me out on this tiller? I have two inches to work with to teach my draw length at 50#. I know that the right side limb bends more towards the tip than the left side and I plan to even them out, however I'm knew to r/doing tiller ingredients and am not sure which is bending correctly. Thanks!(http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/ah298/llobbes1/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153605_zps5xt4uouh.jpg) (http://s1383.photobucket.com/user/llobbes1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153605_zps5xt4uouh.jpg.html)(http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/ah298/llobbes1/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153452_zpsqrvglglz.jpg) (http://s1383.photobucket.com/user/llobbes1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153452_zpsqrvglglz.jpg.html)(http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/ah298/llobbes1/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153514_zpsfjicwdwr.jpg) (http://s1383.photobucket.com/user/llobbes1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153514_zpsfjicwdwr.jpg.html)(http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/ah298/llobbes1/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153509_zpsdtwkcw1w.jpg) (http://s1383.photobucket.com/user/llobbes1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20170121_153509_zpsdtwkcw1w.jpg.html)

For now don't remove wood from the fades to about 4 inches out. The left limb is really flat midlimb and the right limb is as well just not as bad. Don't scrape away your reflex though.

I agree completely with Jon where to focus your attention. I've found that taking thickness away will change things much faster than reducing width. I'm not sure how much you've got, but osage can go pretty narrow without risk of set, so maybe you want to take some off the sides before you work the belly. Just my thoughts  :)

I see the limbs on the left still needs to work more in the outer portion but to me the right limb looks some better. What do you guys think?

The bow is angled on the tillering fixture, the right limb is further from the wall, and I think it's making it look a little funny

Draw it by hand too. You're not going to be shooting it from where it's being held and pulled.

Try this.  Hard to get that exactly right in Paint, but the left limb is definitely flatter at that arrow, and several inches inward toward the handle.  The first 1/3 of each limb is bending plenty, and you are about to lose your reflex in the outer 1/3 of each limb.

I guess I don't understand where to take wood off then.  If the inner 3rd is bending plenty and the outer 3rd is bending to the point where I'm going to lose reflex. I guess the middle 3rd? I don't think the tips are bending at all and where the arrow is pointing is right in the middle of the reflex.

Removed some from the middle of each limb. I'm already a few pounds under weight

This style is really hard for me to tiller. Hope I didn't mess it up too bad

I don't think you are going to get much more out of the wood left without losing your R/D bend. You might gain some, just a little by reducing the grip thickness to where you feel it just starting to bend at full draw.

I think it looks pretty good.....
How long is it and what is your draw lenght?

My draw is 28" and it's 67" ntn. Yeah for better or worse is tiller ed. Don't want to lose more draw weight. Still its holding an inch and a half of reflex right after exercising

Oh, my, that long? You can get what you want by tillering it to your draw length and then piking the ends. a couple of inches. You'll just lose a little reflex.

Ok I could do that. Where does it need to change?

I thought about it and I think I will pike this bow a couple inches.  I would like the tiller to be good and would like to hit my draw weight. It's actually 67" tip to tip not ntn. So does it still need to bend more in the middle 3rd of each limb?

Don't over-do the piking.  It's ok to do it a half inch at a time and see what happens..  That last full draw pic looks fine to me.

Look at your design, and the results of your glue-up. Your bow is a R/D and I know you want the drawn profile to reflect that, and I think it does.

BUT. Your deflex was mild off the form, so we can ask that portion to do it's share of bending, and it was.   Your reflex was mild, too, mostly in the middle 50% of each limb.  That portion also must do a lot of the work, too, and it is retaining 1.5" of reflex, SO by the time you get the bow well bend, back to full draw, it's not at all surprising it looks almost flat.

It has to.  What else can bend?  Then your tips are stiff.  If they had a tiny more reflex off the form, the full draw might look better to your eye, but you'd have even more resting reflex and might overstrain the thing somewhere (although you have plenty of length, really). So, I think what you did and how it looks is completely appropriate.  If you pull it far enough,it has to flatten out eventually, and the R/D has done it's job already from brace to F/D.

Taking 1" of each end won't hurt and will bring weight up a bit.  Tiller is not bad at all.

Thanks Marc! That makes me want to leave it as is. It's about 48# now and when it had been exercised a lot so I don't imagine I will lose much more weight do you? The back and sides sides are all sanded already and the belly is very smooth from scraping
