Title: elm take down
Post by: Hans H on January 26, 2017, 03:18:59 pm
hello folks,
I was a bit disappointed about my last posted td BL bow (a few months ago), she got a splinter popping up on the back. The fail was probably caused from 'wrong' heat (around the edges to the back) while heat treating the belly.
Well, I'd like to have a take down, so I built a new one , my 5th attempt (never give up!).
Many thanks to my friend Simon for the stave. It`s Elm with some sapwood. I used dry heat for string alignment and steam for the soft recurves. Tip overlays and arrow pass are from buffalo horn, for the handle I took some stingray leather. As you can see I left some extra rings on the back for the sleeves.
For finishing I always use „danish oil“, actual 5 layers
Measurements:
ntn:~ 61,5“
tt: ~63“
width at fade: 43 mm, thickness at fadeout ~15mm
52# at 26“
Hope you like it, enjoy

This is to much!!! Take down bow with a stingray handle? This bow is going on the try to imitate list. I'm gonna have to have my brother in law to save me a shark hide or two for handles (closest I'll get to a ray cause he is scared) nice work!

Add my compliments to the list, Hans.

I love how elm looks like nothing special, until you really sand it, then suddenly, with or without stain, you slap the finish on and all this little pretty figure just pops out.

thanks again,  I forgot to tell you the sleeves  is a gift  from Simon, thanks therefor.
yesterday I shoot her in, maybe 50 to 70 shoots, don`t know exactly cause I got very cold fingers (-7°C)
she had a stringfollow from about 1", after maybe 2 to 3  hours she was back (straight)
