Title: Fred Arnold 2017 bow trade sign up closed, reserves needed though
Post by: stuckinthemud on February 22, 2017, 02:59:40 pm
I've already had an offer of help and others keen to take part so let's do this!!

Here is a link to last year's trade for anyone interested in a taste of the fun we all had, as well as the rules and systems Fred designed.

http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,55778.msg758949.html#msg758949

This year's non-invitational trade (hopefully someone will launch the Invitational soon) will be run more or less on the rules set down by Fred last year, finishing end of September. Full rules posted when sign-up closes on March 10th, so lets all make this a brilliant year! Sign up here with r/h or l/h, draw weight, draw length.  If you have a preferred style then its OK to suggest one but I'd prefer the design to be down to the bowyer as I want people to have the chance to experiment and learn something new   ;)

ty_in_ND has already stepped up, big thanks and much appreciated!  Figure a loose 6 months time-scale will allow all of us connected to education to build through the summer vacation - wrap everything up about mid September.  I don't want what happened to Tower to happen this year so am still wondering about when to give out shipping addresses - maybe have two or three shipping dates, sort of when a group of you finishes a bow then they can all ship together  - no 'last man standing' situation this year?

I've volunteered to help out with keeping on top of things like who's getting who's bow and who's shipped/ready-to-go and who hasn't shipped/received (especially if this trade reaches the size it did last year!).  I will not be making a bow for this trade, but if it looks like there will be a problem with someone not getting a bow, I'll be more than happy to scrape some wood.  Anyone who ships a bow should get one.

I'd love to get in on this again. But im not sure when I would be able to start. It would depend on when my eye doctor allows me to move more weight. Problem is that every time I have another surgery on that eye it resets the clock again, cans I know for sure of two more to go. I might be able to crank out something later this summer. But for right now I'll happily sit on the bench. So if anyone ends up short and needs a bow, I can get one turned out and get something out. Just send me a PM if this is the case and I'll be more than happy to help. By then I'll be wanting to do something anyway from being locked in the house not allowed to do much for a while.

Welcome Upstetnybowyer !

Kyle, last year we had a last minute re-shuffle and I'm pretty sure having a late starter, or two, would have been really useful at that time - I do have a 'reserve' list of sorts and if you don't mind I'll add you to it?

Title: Re: Fred Arnold 2017 bow trade sign up
Post by: Mo_coon-catcher on February 23, 2017, 04:46:47 pm
A reserve list works well for me. If someone drops you can plug me in. Or I can make a bow to plug in, I wouldn't need or expect anything in return for that. I jut want to make sure everyone gets what they sign up for.
But just incase,

RH
~50# at 27".

Any design, any draw weight. It doesn't matter to me. I love seeing what everyone makes and how they make it. It could be an easy ahooting light weight bow to a big ol warbow and I'll be a happy, it might be a bit before I build up to shoot the big boy though. Maybe every steal a few things to incorporate into my stuff.

Reserves and Extras

If all goes well we may not need our reserves, and also, some trade members may want to contribute more than one bow - I propose that reserves have the right to build a bow for the trade at any time should they wish to. Unfortunately, they won't have anyone to send it to.  What I suggest is that all those who build a bow with no-one to send it to go into a mini-trade at the end.  What do you all think?

I'm in again for sure. It was fun last year. I learned a lot and got to know all the participants a little better. The ample time available kinda takes the stress out of it and I even had to make a plan B at the last minute.

Right handed
28"-30" draw preferred, but shortie recurves are fun too.
45-65 lbs preferred, please nothing lower than 35 lbs. That's the minimum hunting draw weight in my state.

As long as the guy making mine has fun with it, I'm happy.

Why not, lets give this a try.

Right hand
50-60lbs (won't be upset if it ends up lighter)
31-33 inch draw (I'm a tall guy and this is my true draw, but haven't been able to make on this long yet so I get if it's asking too much)
Don't care about the design as long as it can handle the above and has good tiller.

Haha, yeah it might. Good luck shipping anything like that. I'm 6'2" so a bow my height (74") or longer should do the trick without too much strain right? A little long for my taste but i don't have a long bow yet.

It is up to the ones running the trade, but if I were you, I would want to make a bow for myself before trying it for someone else. It is harder than it looks, and there are safely concerns as well. A bow trade isn't about getting a shiny new bow, but about making something nice for someone else. My recommendation is  watch this one. Work on your own bow with lots of help from people on this site, and jump in next year.

Thanks guys but we are bound by Fred's rules here.

According to the rules of last year's trade, anyone can join, regardless of experience. There was at least one bowyer who was asked to try again when his work wasn't up-to-scratch last year and this applies this year too which is why we have an adjudication process in place, reserves, and a long, long, build time.  I needed to build four bows before I got my trade bow good enough last year, and I nearly drove some PA members spare with my bumbling efforts to learn about take-downs.

As long as all builders accept that in a random draw we might have a master of the trade receiving a bow off a complete novice, then we're all good.  We all have to build the very best we can and we all have to accept that the bow we receive is the very best bow the builder can make, that is the whole point - this is a learning trade - if you are a master of pyramids and flat-bows, but never built a 5-curve or a hollow-limb then this is your chance to post build-alongs and get plenty of help along the way.

Having said all this, it would be great for anyone not having posted to the forum to post pics of their work so we can assess their skills and give them best advice (incidentally I did check out Green River - wow!) but, anyone and everyone, according to Fred's rules can join, even if they NEVER built a bow before.

Everything looks and aounds good to me. I have a visit with my eye doctor Friday. So I'll have a better idea then on how everything is healing and a better time frame on when I can start excreting some effort. If it will be within te deadline. Then I'll have you bump me into the trade. If it's close then keep me in the reserves. ill keep updated. And if any of the new builders in the trade want to travel to northeast Missouri and need some help. Just pm me, come on over, and I can give you some hands on help. But be warned, I work outside so it's weather dependent. And I do finally have a tree built instead of relying on the truck glass as a mirror for tillering, which is in many tiny pieces at this point.

I've been lurking on here for quite a while. Many of my searches took me to the bow trade thread. Where my abilities are now, I wouldn't be comfortable sending someone my work, but now that I'm a member next year I will be getting in on this for sure. This is a very awesome addition to the forum.

, and I nearly drove some PA members spare with my bumbling efforts to learn about take-downs.

I remember that struggle, but to be honest... I didn't remember that it was YOU who was having the design issues.  Does that mean you might give a take down a try this year?

Last year's trade was huge. I hope the sign ups pick up a bit. The more the merrier I say, but if it is your first build... just be aware you'll probably have to build multiple bows before you get one that is good enough to send out. I think my third was the one that I sent out and I had a few shooters under my belt at that point.

I think if we start posting pictures of possible staves and ideas of what we might build people will be encouraged to join in.

If it stops raining (who am I kidding, stop raining in the Springtime in Wales?) I'll go dig through my stash (I actually have some staves this year). Got laurel, ash, yew, holly, blackthorn, apple and hawthorn, mmmm, apple R/d/r take down could be challenging  :D, Mind, the laurel with horn overlays would make a stunning longbow, but then the ash would recurve so nicely, and I still haven't finished a decent Mollie, or I could do a 5 piece mock horn bow like pat's if I leave enough time for the sinew to cure? Argh, can't choose! Dunno what to do but I do know its gonna be great! ;D

I would like to join this year but unfortunately will have to sit this one out.  I am working to get my house ready to sell, plan to then sell my house and move.  I also hope to be starting a new job soon.  Also have a son graduating high school.  I fear if I joined my wife would not be very happy with me.

I plan to watch this trade though.  I had a blast with last years trade.  Oh, did I mention that I now have a treasured bow made of yew that was expertly crafted by Jeffp51.  The stave came from Fred Arnold.  The only way that bow could be taken from me will be to pry it from my cold, dead hand!!

I also had a lot of fun building a bow for someone else.  Normal little errors in a bow for myself suddenly became huge issues.  Participating definatley made me a better bowyer.

Have fun everyone.  Mike

It sounds like its healing well. They're going to go in and remove the lens material in about 10 days to 2 weeks. Then it'll be about 6-8 weeks before they put the lens in. But he said after this second surgery I'll be able to do stuff like bow building again before they put the lens in. That'll be about the time the boot is off for good and I can put full weight on my foot. So I should be good to go for the trade. But I've essentially got about 3 months if there is no retina troubles before I'm patched up.

With the attention and accolades last year's trade received I thought for sure we'd get some of those invitational participants to sign up this year and pull double duty. Many even stated(somewhere in the 300+ pages of thread) they wished the would have gotten involved or wouldn't have been disappointed if they had. The ample build time and earlier start certainly allows for a double build. Watching a veteran bowyer's build from stave to finished bow is about the best method for advancing ones own skills IMO.

No pressure, expectations or implied obligation intended, just an observation. I just figured I'd throw it out there, which is about as much of an invitation one could hope for with this particular trade.  >:D ;D Sorry I just couldn't help a little good natured ribbing.

No sign of an Invitational so far - those guys had been busy a while by now this time last year - sure hope they don't miss out on the fun of a Trade!  Maybe they're all worn out by the North American showcase? >:D

Hi Jason, good to hear from you, welcome!

How long does Juniper take to cure after cutting it down? I would like to make a sinew backed Rocky Mountain Juniper bow spliced together at the handle so I can get it longer in length (maybe recurved, depending if my recipient wants it). But I still have to harvest the wood. Maybe Springbuck has some, or else I'll have to use another wood.

Dunno. Roughed out and hot boxed shouldn't take too long, keep weighing it til it stabilises. Few weeks maybe?

What I'm thinking is harvesting it this month or next, cutting it into billets, letting it slow dry in April and May, hot boxing it in the car in June, then starting work end of June/early-July. That gives me July and August to work the bow and apply the sinew. Do you guys think that will work? Or is that just not enough time?

In the meantime, I'll try doing one of similar design with just different wood. That way if it's not enough time I'll have it as a back-up, and if I do I'll have practice.

Sinew can be applied while it's green, that way you sinew will cure and stave will dry out together. I'm working and a sinew juniper that I cut last September, and haven't had any issues.

Like HD said, the horn bow guys let the stave dry only for a few weeks before shaping and sinewing

I think the first big loss of moisture is the part not to force, I'd say a month give or take depending wood and environment. That's when a majority of the potential damage/ checking is done. Then get it near your final specs, back it, and clamp it in the caul and watch the "paint" dry. With the time line we have you shouldn't need to force it that seriously. I'd work on a plan B bow along side of that build so you don't get impatient during those times when the waiting matters.

You really don't need specs for your build until the second half of it anyway.

I don't have a problem with that. No harm in one extra week, but not sure I want to have the sign-up running for a month.

If we did start later, then we'd need to move the finish date too, so what about extending completion date to last day of September.

OK, so sign up to run until midnight Pacific time on Friday March the 17th, end date  September 30th

Stickinthemud: Thanks for the welcome.

I don't have much experience making bows but I have been woodworking for a long time. I have several oak staves from a tree that fell in my yard a few months ago, and several more from another hardwood tree which fell about the same time. They should be workable by this spring. I also have Apple trees and walnut in my back yard plus several acres of oak, pine, ERC, poplar, and others I don't recognize which I can get staves from. Of course, I realize some of those woods would need to be backed to make a good bow. Can you recommend which woods I named would make good bows?

OK everyone, Spring has sort-of arrived. The birds are singing and daffodils are bloomin' everywhere, time to tiptoe to the wood-pile, dust off the tools and join in the Trade!  We have 15 signed up so far with a wide range of experience from a couple of beginners to some of the best known names on the forum. This is only half last years numbers so, come and join in the fun, what've you got to loose - its a 6 month build time!  Seven days left til sign-up closes, count-down is beginning, no more extensions  ;D

Exciting news!  someone who wishes to remain anonymous has contacted one of the trade members with some incentives to be passed on through the duration of the trade. All very mysterious and totally fantastic. So, every now and then, there will be a random draw of all active trade members and someone very lucky will get something very nice just for being involved.
I would like to take time out to say heart-felt thanks to the benefactor for their incredible kindness and generosity.

All right come on, lets make this the best trade ever, you still have a few days left to sign up!

I would like to, but I have a ton of obligations this summer- I will be taking a group of students to Berlin this summer, and I owe a couple of neighbors a bow, so I don't think I can participate this year. I will be watching though, and I wish everyone luck.
