I plan to remove this 6" oak and split it for staves. Would it be best to use the compression (under) side for an unbacked self-bow or the tension (upper) side?

Tension side, but it's better to use one growing straight. Less surprises and more layout choices that way.

OK, I'll use the straight section of the tension side towards the top.
Bow or not, the tree has to go. (W

I would use the best side but also make bows with as much of the wood that I could.

I'm planning to cut this down over the weekend. Should I de-bark it and/or Split it into halves or quarters immediately?
-
I'd split it in half at least then wait a week and split it into staves. Be sure to seal the ends and if the bark is removed seal the back.

OK, I can leave the bark on for now. I'll split it in half then wait a week or two to do quarters.

Watch them to be sure insects aren't hatching and boring into the wood. You can treat the bark with insecticide.

Lots of big knots in that trunk, I suspect it has some challenging wood in it at best.

Yes there will other challenges with that log after the bark is off besides what side to use.I'd use any side myself. The bark just pops right off this time of year.Id' get that done right away after splitting and then shellacked and stored in a shed or the house to stay away from bugs.A lot of work at once but it would be worth it.
