Title: Board bow?
Post by: CB57 on June 03, 2017, 09:04:26 am
Have never built one before, but been thinking about it. Found a 1"x2"x6' straight grained hickory board at Menards yesterday. Bought it. Thinking of a modified pyramid or mollegabet style. May have to build up the handle, unless I make it bendy-handled. Have never made one like that before. Any secret pitfalls I should avoid? Will it heat treat ok? Built-up rigid handle, or bendy? What are your experiences?

If you never build a bow before I would suggest you build a pyramid bow with a rigid handle (so glue a piece on it an fade it really good into the working area so it does not pop off)
There are some excellent buildalongs in the builalong section on this site so use that.
If you have done some stave bows before, make a molly because they are sweet ;D

Look at the top of the "How To" page, Jawge(George Tsoukalas) bow building page. George has everything you need to know. After absorbing George's info come back here with pics and we'll walk you through.

Built a few, with moderate success (i.e. Didn't break 'em.)

I keep seeing this Jawge guy posting  on here. He must be ok at this stuff, hm? I'll check his info and see if he can teach a relative greenhorn a few tricks, mmkay? 😉

If your fairly new at this I would suggest a pyramid stlye ,being equal tappering.from experience I would recommend you doing a bend test before you put a lot of effort in to it and then find that fungus has already visited.

George is a retired school reaches and has been building wood bows for a long time. That combo means he will have easy to understand, well thought out info for the newbys and most folks in general.

This is the starting point of my bow building career.  Download these plans and follow them is my suggestion, its a nice little bow when you get done and you will have learned alot.
