Title: Tiller check?
Post by: mxalex229 on July 05, 2017, 08:34:00 pm
working on my second bow its a gullwing with static recurves. This is my tiller so far, my guess is the red is where I need to take some wood off the green is where I'm not sure if I should or not? Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks in advance! :OK

I would show pics of the bow unstrung and a front view, showing your width taper.

If its a gullwing then the limbs head uphill right from the handle, unstrung?  If so, I would not take any more off of your fades and I would not take any off in the area of the small red circle on the right.  I would want to know more about the type of wood, the length, drawweight, etc.  Assuming it hasn't taken any set at this point then I would say it could be looking pretty good.

Ditto with Steve. Set in the unstrung bow  will help  tell you if an area is bending too much.

ohh okay. The bow is made of orange osage with a hickory backing. After taking the pictures I can see the set took away a lot of the recurve/reflex near the handle, no worries I never expected it to be perfect. Hope this unbraced picture helps!

The entire limb from mid way out on both sides needs to bend evenly. Right now you have about 12-14" of bend on each side.

I agree with Pearl.

Do I need to take off more near the fades? Or the outer limb?

Outer limbs, most of the bend is happening in the inner limb, just like Pearl said.  You need to get the outer portions of the limbs bending more.  Take it slow and patient.

Inner 1/3 - 1/2 of each limb is doing all the work... leave those areas and get the outers working more, but don't try to get the extreme tips moving.

You have yourself a true beauty there. Get that tiller tweaked a bit and you could win a BOM with it.

I'll have to take it real slow on the tiller, I wouldn't say BOM, but I hope I can make it a damn fine stick.

If your looking for longitivity of the bow........more bend in the outer portion of the limbs would be best.....You most likely have "screamer" bow there as build but if you want a bow to last a while...more bend in the outer limbs (balance) is better. JIMO....

I think I'd have to agree with Dbar. Not sure it's worth changing anything now on this one but for your next one I'd try to get a little more movement mid to outer limb. Just keep the static tips from bending. I still like most of my movement inner 1/3 but I like to get the rest moveing a little. Not so much that you have wippy tips just so the whole limb is bending. It will help keep the set to a minimum and as Dbar said make your bow last longer.

Agree with these guys.  I like the left limb more.  However, that is not an easy tiller, at least for me, it seems like a lot of work.  I'd still like to see your width taper and a bow in hand/full draw pic.  If the fades didn't take set you'd have  to have a more rounded tiller.
I'm looking at it thinking, 'thank God for osage'.  Bottom line is that its an excellent effort and I'm not sure i could do it.  FWiW.  I like this kind of thing more than the pretty bows and would vote BOM, especially if you put 100 arrows through it and keep that unbraced look.

Thanks all for the help! Starting on the finish work soon. Its currently sitting 52# at 29", after tapering the limbs a bit and sanding I'm hoping for a comfortable 45# at 29".... we shall see.

Hard to believe that is your second bow, that would be a nice job for anyone.
