Title: Early start for November
Post by: JW_Halverson on August 24, 2017, 08:19:21 pm
Drew a coveted Black Hills rifle season buck tag. Been wanting to blood this new Marlin t'irty-t'irty, so I am a little excited.

I am already going through gear bags and boxes trying to decide what all is going in the backpack with me.
-Very low likelihood that I will have to overnight, but a space blanket weighs little to nothing, so that is an easy choice.
-One small, narrow bladed knife, and one medium sized knife...both sharpened to a frighteningly sharp edge.
-A very small hatched honed enough to shave with, of course.
-It goes without saying that a ziplock baggie inside another ziplock baggie with half a roll of high quality buttwipe.  I am not a total savage.  Plus, one can use squares to mark blood trail.
-A couple short thongs of leather and a hank of paracord wound into a ball always comes in handy.
-Then there is the "oh hell" canvas bag with some limited first aid gear in case things go pear shaped. Included items: stainless steel referee's whistle, two small compasses, several glow sticks and I always carry three forms of firestarting plus osage shavings soaked in the leavings after processing beeswax. (A beeswax coated curl of osage is mighty firestarter kindling, my friends). The three forms are usually a bundle of strike-anywhere kitchen matches in a waterproof container, a zippo lighter, and a flint and steel set with plenty of charcloth.
-A two oz stainless steel flask with good scotch to be used sparingly in case of dire emergency and/or celebration.

Water bottles and a large and varied lunch will be packed daily, subject to change based on what is available in cupboard and fridge.

What things not listed do you consider necessary?

-A couple short thongs

Interesting choice of undergarments  ;D

I would suggest one of those small power packs that you can recharge a phone with.  I don't know what kind of reception you will get there but a charged phone is always a good thing.  If the hunt is successful you will want to get a lot of pictures.

John, how about a water filter, a cheap plastic poncho and/or a cheap plastic drop cloth, for your first aid kit, Imodium(just in case), a folding camp/landscape saw, head lamp. chemical ice/heat packs for sprains.

Now you are going to think of what I am wearing the next time you are in the woods deer hunting. You're welcome.

This phone doesn't hold a charge all that well anymore, and I have one of those power packs, good call (pun intended!)

We almost never get rain or snow in November here, fire is a greater danger. I'd nix the water filter as in November there are no ephemeral streams left and the springs are rare at that season. I suffer through carrying a gallon of water. And I figure the space blanket could cover that contingency, too.  The small hatchet should take care of the same issues as the saw.  The headlamp is something I often carry, not sure why I omitted it from the list.  Same with the heat packs in colder weather, but adding a chemical cold pack is not a bad idea, either!

All of the above, plus a couple of long burning candle, and a sharpening tool of some sort, and an extra ziplock bag or two for the sinew, and the liver.  Good hunting!  That beeswax starter makes a sweet smelling campfire (=).

Guess I don't get out much, just walk to my hunting spots. Usually just enough clothes for the constantly changing weather. Jerky, water, skinning knife, binoculars, small led flash light and cell phone. I like the high quality butt wipe idea, I remember wishing I'd have had some for marking trail before. Also the phone charger, last year when I got my first Primitive buck I had constant non stop texting and phone calls from my friends for the two hours I waited to look for buck. When I went to take pictures got 3 and phone was dead. Couldn't even tell everyone I found him.
I know my list probably doesn't help all that much JW but wishing you the best of luck on a hopefully successful and thrilling hunt. I'm sure there will be a very interesting story to be told in the end. Don't forget your keys or get locked in anyplace on the wrong side of a gate. Although it sure does make the story better.

It does make an excellent point about excessive texting/etc killing the phone. This phone has a pretty short battery life anymore and your post reinforces OO's recommendation for the recharging battery pack!

I talked with a friend of mine that works a lot in the movie industry and sets up photoshoots for western artists to take pictures they use later to paint from.  He wants me to set up an early 20th century deer camp with a lot of the historical period props.  He says he has a painter that wants to do a series of paintings like what you would have seen on Remington or Winchester calendars around 1910.  Well, heck, I'm gonna be carrying a Marlin lever action, so why not go the whole hog???  I was planning on camping for part of a week anyway during deer season. Might makes some pretty pictures in the end.

Well, I could bring my Winchester 94', a one pole tent, a double blade axe, and a bunch of cast iron cooking stuff -C- ;D.  Sounds like fun!

Sounds like you can leave the keys home and saddle up JW. I'd love to see those pictures and really like to see the paintings. I'm sure you'll come up with some great pictures, maybe Hawkdancer can join you.

Congrats on the tag JW.. Ifin I think of preplanning a special hunt out of the norm.. I start laying out gear kinda like a woman lays out her outfits for a trip.. Gives you a chance to preview what you need.. Then get it your pack and see if you can carry it  :o.. Always remember a dry pair of socks can be a wonderful thing..
Thanks Leroy

Dang, I hate to renege, but I just checked my "little red folder", and I will be getting "nuked" every day from 5November through about 15 December for prostate cancer.  At least my elk tag is for. October, and our deer tags are for our local area.  Even so, I will miss at least one day of elk season for prep treatment.  Sounds like it will be a fun camp though!  Hopefully, I will be able to make opening day of pheasant season.  Rain check, maybe?

Hawkdancer , I have been there and one good thing, if the drive isn't long for you treatment , the treatment is very quick, maybe 15 minutes, in and out and then go hunting. ;) John sounds like you have most anything you might need. Way more than I would probably carry. :)

Consider the rain check issued.

Pappy, sometimes I get into a stalk that takes me far, far from the vehicle.  Assistance, or even access to assistance, can be a bit of a stretch.  There was once I shot a deer 3/4 mile from the vehicle but only 200 yds off a road.  I hiked back to the truck and drove 31 miles to get around to the road where the deer was located.  THAT is why I want a complete but condensed utility pack!    Well, that and if I do all the over-thinking now, it saves panic the night before opening day!  It's something to keep my mind busy mulling over in the meanwhile!

Now, somewhere in the Black Hills a big old buck is saying to a turkey, "Listen here, Tom.  Remember this spring when I busted cover in front of that clown that was looking to put you in the ground?  Well I hear he drew a tag.  You owe me, Tom, you OWE me!"
