Life, work, and the family have kept me busy most of this season so far. I haven't been able to hunt since opening day. I hit the woods this evening with about 2 hour of daylight left. I got settled in a tree overlooking the end of a mowed field. About 30 minutes later I heard movement to my left. A doe and 2 large fawns made their way towards the field. It was kind of breezy and the old doe was being very cautious. She held up just inside the woods and became very nervous. She would look every direction for several minutes before taking a step. It took her about 20 minutes to work her way into the field. She knew something was up but couldn't figure it out. Several times she looked my direction but never saw me. My home made camo may look funny but I'm convinced it works. She was within 20 yards of me the entire time. During the 20 minutes it took her to enter the field I was concentrating on keeping my heart rate down and trying to not move a muscle. Once she made her way into the open field she walked through my shooting window before I could stand and get a shot. Then suddenly she stopped and turned around giving me a 15 yard broadside shot. I don't remember drawing or releasing the string. I saw my arrow hit her a little low behind the shoulder. As she took off I saw blood spraying out. She only made it about 40 yards before going down under a fallen tree. I was by myself tonight so I didn't get a picture with me in it.
This is the opening where she was standing when I shot

The blood trail was easy to follow.

This is deer #2 for the 1962 Bear Kodiak Magnum in only 4.5 hours on stand this season.

The shot was low but it still went through the heart.

I found the arrow but the Zwickey point was missing from it. I tried looking for it but couldn't find it. I'll try again in the daylight. I've been very impressed with the Cliff Zwickey point. I don't like how it came off the screw in adapter though. I'm not sure what they used to glue it on.

Good shooting Clint and congrats on #2. Those old bows still do the job. :OK
I'll come by and help you eat some of that venison at the Classic next spring. ;)
-
Sounds good Pat. I'll have some marinated loin steaks and some burger.
-
You're making my mouth water. -C-
-
You need to get there early in the week Pat. The deer doesn't last very long.
-
Way cool Clint - I know that Bow is smiling a bit (SH) ! Bob

Nice job Clint, nice eating and some good shooting. :)

Was wondering where you were. Was starting to think maybe you were upset for me kinda taking over your view from the stand thread.
Congratulations again Clint. You must kinda like that bow, it sure seems to like you. Not thinking the deer have the same warm fuzzy feeling for it. Good Hunting Clint. I know you didn't get as much time for setting stuff up preseason and all but dang can't complain about the results. Two does in two hunts in 4 1/2 hours hunting time. Maybe your on to something there.

I wasn't upset at you BJ. I enjoy seeing your stand pictures. I've just been to busy to take any myself. I plan on taking another week off hunting. I want to wait until the bucks start moving during the daylight. We got our stands up late but we have barely used them. We have stayed out of our best stands so far. I think we have over hunted that area before. I don't want to do that again.
-
Thanks guys. When I picked this bow up from the vendor set up on Pappy's front porch I felt it had some good mojo in it.
-
Look forward to seeing more pictures on your view from the stand post Clint

Aren't those old Bears fun? Congratulations, Bud.

WOW two traditional bow kills with 4.5 hours in the stand.....what are those deer doing??? coming out and rolling over and saying "take me Clintster, take me!!!!!" :)
Just kidding buddy, I'm just jealous because I haven't got out much the year yet. I'm thinking I'll get out some this weekend.
Again, way to go Clint!!!

They are a lot of fun Eddie. I'm looking for one in rough shape to attempt a restoration job.
Bill, We have an abundance of does and available freezer space ;D
-
Nice shoot Clint! that freezer going to fill up quick.
-
That is some good shooting Clint. Took a bear on Sept 10th with a 69 Kodiak Hunter but yet to get a shot at a deer. I will have to check and see if the wife and I can make it to the Classic this spring.
-
Awesome shooting. You are having a good season! I have a couple of vintage recurves that are special to me. I am kicking off my season Monday with a 67 Kodiak hunter that shoots better than any other bow I own. Old Bear bows do pack a lot of mojo!
-
Our season opens Saturday but will just about need a boat to get in the swamp along with a couple of Thermacels. I'm hoping to get out at least this weekend before I get laid up for a couple of weeks.
-
Clint,
Congratulations on another fine shot...I have an old Kodiak that draws dust on the shelf, but one of the smoothest and quietest bows I ever handled...

Awesome shot Clint. I never got the pumper with my ole Grizzly
and Zwickey's but got a lot of lung that did fine.
Dust your Kodiak Don and get out there. lol You reminded me---
My daughter made me dust off my Griz and take her hunting that fall.
I need to find some earlier pics this is around 1972.
Hope you don't mind Clint.

Thanks guys.
Nice picture Zuma!
Jeb, do you have any pictures of your bear?
-
Man your on a roll!! Congrats!
-
Way to go Clint! Your making bow hunting look a little to easy bud! Im glad your having luck in the early season. I really never hunt it much. But the next 3 weeks is an awesome time to be in the woods around here. But my favorite time is late November into January. Ive seen a ton of deer during that time.
Patrick
-
Good luck Patrick. My favorite time in the woods is Halloween and the first week of November. This season is going much better than last year. I never got a single shot opportunity while carrying a bow.
-
Awesome job Clint, filling that freezer early. :-D
-
Man buddy you are a stone cold killer with that old bear in your hands
-
Yeh.......I think he has an issue with self bows.....................
But he's a hunter/harvester oh hell killer with FG bows.
DBar
-
I've got 2 with self bows and 2 with FG bows now.
-
Good for you Clint not many have those stats..........
