Title: Limits of Rawhide
Post by: Ryan Jacob on December 22, 2017, 01:03:29 am
How far can one stretch rawhide? Will I get an 1 or 2 or will I be able to get 4 or maybe more?

Once wet 1 or 2 maybe, don't stretch as much as you might think.

1 or 2 inches is all I need really, I'm gonna splice it anyways :)

You know it shrinks as it dries.

Exactly, Pat. Stretch all you want and then watch it go right back as it dries. I wouldn't be surprised if it has enough pull as it dries to yank it free from the glue. Matter of fact it will dry up faster than the glue starts to tack.

If you are trying to cover a stiff gripped bow but don't have enough to cover, then just skip the center 4" where the leather grip will be. If possible.

Well, that’s gonna make things tricky. My pieces are too short, guess I’ll use cloth this time.

I always stretch mine a bit before gluing, pat it dry and glues with TB3, never had a problem with it pulling away, sinew shrinks also and folks don't seem to have a problem with it pulling away. ;) :) I see no difference.

Ya that could be a problem, I just give mine a few good tugs.  ;) I have plenty of rawhide so length ant a problem but if it were I would just leave out the handle and last several inches of the tip ends. If you don't have enough for that, I guess you need to use something else as you said or get longer rawhide. :)
