I'd say your in luck then Sleek. I'm not a great source for where and what type of stone to get but novaculite seems to be pretty easy to find at all your normal Flint knapping supply stores online.
Personally my favorite place to get stone is from meets. I like to be able to see the stone, ask questions to the vendor or knapper and you can save a bundle on no shipping. Sometimes you can buy a small amount try it to see if you like it and get more if you do. I've learned to save my very limited play money for the Primitive Meets. Make a list of everything I need before I go and restock for another year.

Debitage piles are great when you are starting. Any knappers you can hook up with around your area?
If you are starting out and going to consider ordering rock, I think it's tough to beat Georgetown. Its what my learning curve in #age was really from. It's predictable in breaking and what you are going to get if ordered.
Hope you get the bug...

Yea for many years in my early 20's all I knapped was glass and the rock I got from the dump piles at knap ins. All I could make was small points at the time anyway and it kept me knapping for years on free material.
But novaculite is easily one of the best learning materials you could ask for. Chips almost as easy as glass but much stronger. It's sold at every knap in and all over the web.

Novaculite comes from S E Arkansas. Fun and beautiful to knap. :KN :KN

lol...i have a debitage pile to pick through...anybody close to me is more than welcome..probally a couple hundred pounds of every material you can think of..

In my experience, some novaculite has been fantastic, but some has been prone to step. I think the prettiest of it is the spider web.

Most all Novaculite likes some heat. I have a lot of abo
stuff that wasn't treated and it's pretty rough. (=) (=) :KN

That's what happens Sleek. You'll never look at landscaping stone the same. Even old TV screens and toilets might get a second look.

As in, those bug round river rock lookin things around fast food joints? Can they be worked?
BJ, to be honest, i have caught myself with my ohone in my hand passively feeling the corners wondering where the first flake should come off...

Thanks Zuma.
Im having trouble with thinning. Every time I want to shoot a thinning flake I find it want to just follow the same olane as the last flake, rather than do at a deeper angle and shoot farther. Do I have to raise the platform higher, to get get better thinning flakes or is there a secret that keeps me from loosing so much width just to set up for thinning?
