Folks, I sinew backed an Ocean Spray bow at floor tiller 2 years ago...I had planned on finishing it many times...It was kind of a forgotten project until "half eye" Rich Rousseau sent me a cased rawhide Snapper Turtle leg with claws and a 2 ply Whitetail rawhide string...I decided this OS would be the perfect candidate and time to finish it up...
Paint design on back is Iroquoian inspired...On the belly I painted a Snapping Turtle, Water Moccasin and some tracks to represent my hunting area...This was a fun project and hope to hunt with a' no wa ra this fall...
Specs:
58@26
55" nock to nock
1 1/8" wide @ handle 1/2" wide @ nocks
Sinew backed and sealed with pine pitch shellac
Paint: Black and red ochre with egg yolk...
Thanks for looking, Don

Really nice Don. Looks like your patience paid off with that stave. It knew what it wanted to be.

Killer! Nice work Don.
-
I dig it don. Nice work with the turtle feet I know now we’ll be seeing more of that.
-
Sweet bow! Love the turtle grip .
-
A primal bow if I ever saw one with added touches.Nice work.I've heard snapping turtle neck skin makes excellent raw hide for string.
-
awesome bow. love the style, the art and that beautiful string :OK
-
I really like your handle 👍🏻
-
upstatenybowyer, glad you like it man, thank you...
Clint, thank you buddy, the egg yolk paint was easier, the hide glue paint kept jelling up to quick on my brush...I will experiment more...
bjrogg, thanks man, patience comes easy when you forget about it in the corner...Lol
JonW, glad you approve Sir, means a lot...
Bryce, thanks man, hide gluing the handle was an experience for sure...Glad the pins held on this one...
Mounter, glad you like it, thank you...
BowEd, thank you, I used all natural materials...I also heard the same thing about the neck skin...

Done some research and came up with the bow name "a' no wa ra" It is the Mohawk word for turtle...Here's a link for those of you that are interested http://www.firstvoices.com/en/Kanienkeha-Mohawk-EN/word/98dc1f36f6c8b2df/turtle

Great ingenuity right there, Great job. John

Mr. Burchett, you have really out done your bad self . To my mind that is an absolute perfect example of a Eastern Woodland type bow. When I got to see the "shootin movie" that arrow came out sweet, hard, and damned quick too. Got to believe that will shoot pass-through arrows slam through a whitetail.
Dont say too much is "perfect" but damned if that is not. Ought to be in a museum after ya kill a few deer mind ;) Absolutely top notch all around my friend.

I love it. I really like the paint job and the turtle claw. I have never seen a bow with a claw like that. I love to see bows of all natural materials. Looks like a fun shooter too.
-
Nice work, Don. I bet that sucker has some mass to it. The wood itself is so dense. It surprised me.
-
That's a piece of art, beautiful!
-
Wow :o mighty fine looking bow. Did you see any change in poundage over the two years?.
Again just beautiful
DBar
-
That's a real work of art. Absolutely beautiful!
-
Wow guy's! Thanks for all the kind words...!!!!!
Stoner, thanks for the compliment man...
half eye, Rich I couldn't have done it without you man...After all the handle was your idea, thanks buddy...Top notch rawhide strings you sent also...
Swampman, I'm glad you like it...I thought the claw handle made for an interesting project...
Chris, Thanks and yes OS is dense and doesn't take much to make a heavy hitter...
Leonwood, thank you for the very fine compliment...
DBar, thanks, it was sinewed after floor tiller / long string and never weighed it until I started recent tillering...
stickbowbeard, thank you for the kind words!
-
That's a fine piece of work there! You should be very proud and don't worry...you will eventually learn how to be patient.
-
Don,
I think everyone likes it as much as I do. That's top notch work, I just don't see how it could be any better! A lot of time, thought, and effort went into that bow. It has paid off with a bow that is unique. I think its BOM material. what do you guys think? You have outdone yourself Don.
Steve
-
That is awesome! Very creative idea with the turtle.
-
Stunning work and with that quiver it's probably the most awesome set I have ever clapped eyes on. Inspirational.
-
Thanks for sharing, it's a beauty and btw I'm extremely interested to learn all I can find about ocean spray. It's become nearly an obsession. I keep finding more and more, now, good quality stuff. Can't hardly wait until winter time again so I can cut the latest finds.
I love that OS works so well for this, and no one gets angry if you cut some.
-
DuBois, thank you and you are right...This obsession of making bows will teach patience...I have learned to slow down a little...
S.C.hunter, Steve thanks for such I fine compliment buddy, hope to see you soon and brake some rock...We gotta do this man
High Desert, thank's man...Rich done a great job casing it out, nothing left but hide and claws, I will post some pics of the raw materials here...
RatherBinTheWoods, Wow! thank you, I have been inspired by many others here also...
I am blown away by everyone's interest and comments, means a lot coming from you...
Don
Here's a few pics of the rawhide claw...

Taxus brevifloia,
Thanks man.... I have limited experience with the pieces I have worked...Your in the right place to learn about OS though...There's been quite a few posted...Good luck on drying your find...

Very impressive work sir
-
Very impressive work. I think the full draw and unbraced profile of that short a bow speak for themselves. Excellent use of all natural materials.
I really like that 2 ply whitetail rawhide string. That's a work of art in itself. Maybe half eye can comment on the process behind it's construction?
-
Looks great. Perfect tiller . I really like your short bows.
-
A rare beauty for sure !
Greg
-
Awesome work Don!
-
redhillbows, thank you sir...I like the one you posted up recently also...
Bayou Ben, thank you...It would be interesting for Rich to comment on his process, they are really nice...Probably the quietest string I have shot to date...
hunterbob, great to hear from my Ohio buddy, thanks man...
Greg DeJanes, Thank you !
Howard, allready seeing this one laying across my lap and Summer's not here yet, thanks buddy...
Thanks for all the fine comments guy's, means a lot hearing from you...
Don
-
Very very nice.
-
That's a fine looking bow, well done
-
Love the picture of the raw materials Don. That turtle leg sure was clean. Just curious how many times do you have to string a bow with rawhide string before it stops stretching? I would imagine a bunch but I've never used it. I get frustrated with B-55
Once again very nice work
Bjrogg
-
Great lookin bow!
-
Beautiful bow!
-
Morgan, thank you...
Aaron, thank you for the compliment sir...
Bj, glad you enjoyed the pictures...Rawhide certainly stretches especially a new string...At first brace I can actually see the brace move and feel it close up on my step through method of stringing...I then tie again and again until it stabilizes enough to shoot...After the first shot this sequence takes over again, tie again until the brace stabilizes...This has to be constantly monitored during shooting sessions and is what keeps it interesting and fun...Rawhide is the quietest string I have shot probably attributed to it's stretch and flexability...It is pretty durable also...I have seen many museum bows and pictures with 2 ply rawhide strings and can see how the NA fed their families when used...Thank you for your interest and maybe Rich will comment on the construction...
M2A thank you
Webbbowhunter, thank you and welcome to PA...
Don

Just great , a true primitive and who better than half eye to inspire a bow like that.
-
don

-
Very cool! Like the string a lot
-
ohma2, I agree, "half eye" has been an inspiration to me and many others...
Kevin, thanks man!

Thanks again everyone....Don

Late to the game on this one, beautiful, love the grip and all the rest of it. Great job. :)

I keep coming back and looking at this bow. You really out did yourself on this one. The turtle claw really sets it apart from the rest. This should really be a great candidate for bow of the month. A winner for sure.
-
Bob, thank you for the kind words man, I am very humbled from all the responses...So glad you like it buddy...
Don
-
Love all the details on this.
-
Thank you Sir, I also enjoyed the beautiful paddle bow you posted...Loved the backing pattern and the bend...
Don
-
Beautiful work Don does that OS like sinew?
-
Peacebow_Coos,
Yes, I think on a short OS bow sinew increases the performance...The SG of OS is very high...It will sink in water...After applying the sinew I had to reduce the bow belly quite significantly compared to the last 4 unbacked OS I built...This one is the fastest OS I built...I only made 5 OS bows so my experience is limited...There has been some OS bows posted in the past that have been sinewed...This bow was able to handle the compression very well...After shooting, the slight reflex returns...
Thanks, Don
-
Nice, I saw one that DC built a while ago, but I've been offline for awhile so I may have missed the rest, have to do some catching up! Good to have your opinion on it, you make sweet bows, thanks
