Title: Harvested a Nice Yew
Post by: Weylin on May 27, 2018, 11:38:25 pm
I found one of the nicest yew trees I've seen today. I had access to some private land. Most of the trees were twisted or scraggly but this one was a keeper. Straight and clean with no limbs for about 8 feet. I took the section above that as well which had some branches but also a couple clean sides. All in all I think I will easily get 10 bows out of this one tree. And just because I'm a glutton for punishment I did all the cutting with a little folding saw.   )W(

I know that joy! Just finding a good one is uplifting, and once I get it cut and waxed I get a real good feeling.

I dig it! That scar on the one side is interesting. Do you find a differecne in bow quality from low elevation vs high elevation ( above 3000ft)?

Trying to stock up before I leave Oregon. I might go out again this weekend with a buddy to get more.

I split it right down that seam. That's a place where it's starting to fold in on itself and rot from the inside. This tree had just started the process. There usually is a fair difference in regards to elevation. This is low elevation stuff from the foothills of the coast range in Oregon. The high cascades yew will usually have much tighter growth rings. The low elevation wood still makes great bows.

Looking forward to seeing what you make from them. Heck the saw is nothing compared to buckling and unbuckling those child car seats.
