Thats great. I'm new to traditional archery but I've been wanting to build my own bow for a few years. A few months ago my dad gave me my grandfathers longbow (posted on this site a while ago) . I love it and I have sold my compound. I just started a hickory backed red oak bow last week. I've soaked in soo much just from reading all of the posts on this site. Since I started shooting this old bow I don't see trees anymore. I just see a buch of bows everywhere.  I've also began to collect a alot of wood. Its a true sickness ;D.

Ok - Intro

I'm Jimmy Blackmon and I've called Clarksville, TN home for the past 5 years.  I'm a North Georgia boy by birth, but I'm in the Army so I've been away from Ga for about 22 years.  I'm assiged to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).  I've been shooting my whole life but I've only made two bows and am in the process of making my 3rd, an Osage with the hlep of GregB and Pappy.  I've required a lot of help from these fellows so I think I'll name this bow the Bagger in honor of Baggett and Bagwell.

Hey, I'm Nick, or Service-bear-y and I'm from Idaho.  I've hunted with a martin glass bow for ten years (and the glass has bothered me for 9 years)  and just started building my first bow.  Actually have 3 started atm, yew (need to boil and bend limb before tillering, tried steam for 3 hours and it just sucks) serviceberry, and BL.  Any advice on the best size for a boiling pipe?  Anyways, I have lived for hunting since I was 12, and have taken many deer, 3 elk and 3 black bears.  Would like to sell bows in the near future (am I dreaming that I could make good enough bows to sell with only a year or two of experience?)  and is there much of a demand for primitive, plain-jane serviceberry/chokecherry bows?  or could I even sell them for $200 or more if they are quality bows?  I'd also like to find some more seriously dedicated wilderness people to hunt and backpack with (undomesticated humans preferred).  Only problem is that I may be moving soon due to a job, so hopefully I'll land near some serious wilderness types.  Anyone near my neck of the woods?
----only been on here about a week, and you guys rock!  I've been crazy busy with school, but I'm renewing my subscription asap:)  probably today

Great site!

Im new here and figured i would take Dana's advice and make a short introduction.

I live in Alaska on the kenai river and have been and avid outdoorsman my entire life. I have been hunting with bow and arrow for probably 15-18 years, but until just recently, I had never shot a longbow, recurve, selfbow, flatbow, or any other form of bow other than a compound. My Brother-in-law had been talking about making bows out of hickory and i was interested but didnt know the first thing about it. At christmas time our family draws names for gifts and I ended up getting a hickory self bow that he made. From then on i have been completely hooked on the traditional stuff. To be able to make a bow out of a stick and then use it to hunt has got to be like tying your own flies and catching fish with them times 10.

Well to make a long story short, I have been pretty much obsessed with bow building every since christmas. I made my first one out of hickory with some cocobolo in the handle and on the tips. I made it for my wife so i made it 35# at 26" draw. Gave me a chance to figure out the tillering process and a lot of do's and dont's, and i didnt have to worry as much about it breaking being only 35#. Turned out pretty nice and was well worth the satisfaction that i got the first time that it launched and arrow. My second bow I made from maple with a hickory backing, this one i made 48# at 28", was shooting for 50-55 but got a little crazy on the tillering and settled for 48#. I didnt do any tip overlays but did put some bubinga in the handle and, wanting to use something alaskan, I also put a strip of birch in the handle. I would love to make some alaskan wood bows but its proven darn hard to find good bow wood here.

Anyway that is my story in a nutshell. Ill try to attach a couple of photos of the two bows that i have under my belt, feel free to critisize. I am brand spanking new to the bowyer world and any critisizm would be taken as constructive i assure you. Thank you for the great web site and i look forward to getting to know you all. In the picture with two bows, the one on the left is my first bow, the one on the right is my second.

Hi
I'm Chris from South Africa. I've been shooting since I was a kid (some people say I still am)and trying to build bows for a couple of years (made  bows as a kid but those don't count) I have been experimenting with our local woods and have had some really nice successes others not so good, only problem is we are not permitted to cut down indigenous trees.(have to wait for road clearing or suchlikes to collect wood "really"  ;) ;D >:D )     Just found and cut a  whole lot of Black Locust ( an invasive alien here) so that will keep me buissy for a while as well
Looking forward to the interaction here

Hey.  My name is Brendon.  I'm from upstate Ny.

Basically it comes down to a conversation with a friend a few years ago.  I stated how I wanted to make my own archery equipment and other "primitive" skills.  Within a few moments I realized that I CAN do this.  So I lookes at everything archery for hints and clues.

I'd look at magazines with "space bows" and think how far from the real thing it was, and pitty the dupe that thinks spenging a few grand on one makes him elite.  I could never find a magizine that had any real spirit.  That is until I found PA.  This is where the true elite reside.

I have experimented with a few different contraptions, but am currently sitting on a couple logs waiting for better equipment.  I have recently bought a few floor tillered staves and some cane shafts.  I feel it kinda makes me a hack, but I want something for my girlfriend to shoot over the summer.  I also havent given up on the real way.

Well, no need yacking anymore.  I'll try to keep ya posted with the conditions of the staves after I get them, but until then I will bid thee farewell.

Hey Folks,

I'm from Burlington, Vermont, in the New England area of the United States.  I'm actually a Doctoral student at the University of Vermont studying energy systems, renewable energy technologies, and Peak Oil.  I'm in the first year of the program, and will probably be a student for another few years, or so.

I've been making primitive bows for about 6 years, and have never shot a bow that I didn't make myself.  Most of my bows are shorter, just because it's easier to find and afford nice staves that are shorter and sinew backing doesn't take as long.  I also like the fact that shorter bows tend to be more maneuverable.

This coming fall will only be my third hunting season, and Vermont's not an easy place to hunt, so if anyone's nearby and would like to offer other opportunities get in touch.  I might be willing to trade some staves, bow-building mentoring, or even a custom-made bow for better hunting opportunities!

All the best!

Hello!

My name is Andrea, and I am originally from the southwest suburbs of Chicago, IL. I am now attending college in Montana and loving every minute of it. I've loved archery ever since about the 5th grade. I was quite into the "Redwall" series by Brian Jacques, so swords and bows and the like were all fresh in my imagination. One day, I was locked out of my house (forgot my house key) and had a while before my parents got home, so I decided to try and make a bow. I found a skinny little sapling growing off the base of a tree by the shed in the back and cut it down with an old steak knife that was my whittling/project knife I kept in the backward. I cut some nocks very roughly and found an old nylon string to tie to each end of the sapling, found a reasonably straight stick and carved a nock into it, and discovered with great delight that my silly little bow actually launched the stick partway across the yard! With the exhilaration of seeing that first "arrow" fly, I was hooked. So my bow-building operation expanded that summer (and some following summers) to cutting down black willow of a diameter close to what I wanted my bow to be. I would strip off the bark, whittle down the thick end (using a handy lockback pocket knife my father gave to me, which I still have and use) to match the skinny end so they bent pretty similarly, glue a spiral wrapping of leather around the handle, and call it a bow! I would make single-fletch arrows by splitting dowel rods or straight sticks at one end, smashing the quill of a goose feather flat, wedging it in, and wrapping the shaft on either side of the feather. The points were all just whittled sharp.

I now hear that willow makes a terrible bow. In fact, I'm sure the bows I made drew between 5 and 10 pounds, took a fair amount of set, and had a shamefully lopsided tiller. But I sure do miss the joy of the time and care spent making them. Unfortunately, I had a falling-out with my best friend at the time, and when she decided she didn't want me as a friend anymore, she took all my archery tackle with her. Which is extremely depressing, since I was the only one who ever put any sincere effort into building all the bows, arrows, staffs, shields, and wooden swords that went into our pretend games (which were quite fun when we got all of the little neighbor kids to join as the enemy army).

Despite all the silliness, the love of archery was planted in me permanently. I took a four-year break from it, but now that I'm in college and I have all this spare time, I just can't stay away any longer. Right now I'm building a Plains-style osage shortbow, learning how to twist flemish, learning how to embroider with quills, and making arrowheads with a dremel tool from cow bone. This is pretty much the coolest hobby, ever.

Hello
I'm Joel Hug and I live in Switzerland. That means that my english isn't very good,
and when you find the mistakes you can keep them ;D .
I'm interested in primitive archery now for two years, and during this time I've built two flatbows.
My aim is, one day, to build an english longbow of yew.
I've already been often here and looked around, and because it's a great site I decided to register.

Okay, Dana, I put my city and state in the sig line.

It is great to see this new crop of bowyers and archers. Including a few near me in the New England area. I've been registered since 2006, so I'm an old guy, lol.

Just a quick intro for you new folks, I'm the guy building Roman arrow firing torsion artillary - just another form of primitive archery (in this case about 3rd century BC), but not something you would go hunting with (or fire at 3D targets, as 1,000 pounds of pull and armor piercing iron bolt heads will pretty much obliterate foam deer). Got a new machine in the works, and a built one I just need to cast bronze parts for.  All this will get posted eventually.

My name is Joe, I am 60 years old.  I started archery around 1959 when I was living with my grandfather in southern Illinois.  Hunting, fishing and trapping was pretty much our way of life and sustenance.  I am a Vietnam Vet serving in the USN from 1965-1969.   I having been working for a local municipal utility for the last 32 years, could have retired 5 years ago but still there.  I am an amateur bladesmith of 35 years making knives the old way of forge, anvil and hammer.  Recently finished my 1st bow.  Hobbies are archery, bladesmithing, rendezvousing and fly fishing.  I do more reading than posting.

OK, here goes. My name is Kevin Little, I'm married with two little girls, ages 4&5. I'm originally from West-by-God-Virginia, but I married a Mainiac, so here we are. I'm a Registered Maine Guide and bamboo flyrod maker. I've been guiding since college('83) and shooting bows for almost as long. After years of 3D shooting and a couple of runs to the IBO Worlds, I found myself burning out on gadgets. I put away the modern equipment and bought a longbow. It's been all downhill from there  ;)  being a person who likes to make their own gear, it was natural for me to want to make a bow, but I fought it for several years. I finally started on board bows two days ago and proceeded to blow up #1 within 4 hrs. #2 is showing promise, since I backed it, but it's got a ways to go before it's a bow. I need to get some more tools, but I think I'm here to stay.

Dana, I'm responding to your request to say something about myself, and also to thank you for recommending a lumberyard red oak board for my first bow.  Thanks.  I'm a Texan living in Indiana, in Monrovia about 20 miles southwest of Indy, where the woods begin.  In 1991 I started using compound bows, found them very nearly like my rifles, and graduated to a Jerry Hill fiberglass longbow.  Now I'm beginning to make wood bows for my grandaughter and myself, and others as I see fit.  I read Marc St. Louis' article titled "Quick and Easy String" in the Feb/Mar Primitive Archer magazine and still can't figure out how to make a string.  Can you or someone else suggest where I can go to learn?  I have a copy of TBB volume 2 and have ordered 1 and 3, but someone who could point me in the right direction right away would be greatly appreciated.

"bamboo rod building is something i want to learn to do.

Any time. There's some great hunting and fishing up here, as long as you can deal with the winters, lol. The Northwoods are made for archers, since anyplace you can see 20yds is a "clearing".

Rodmaking is every bit as addictive as bowmaking. I suggest getting "Fundamentals of Making a Bamboo Flyrod" By Maurer and Elser as a great starting point. I have all of my students get it and read it cover-to-cover before they show up to learn rodmakng. It really is the bamboo maker's version of the TBB series.

Don Rhudy

If you can make Pappy's get together the first week end of May there will be all kinds of folk to help ya learn. Try to make a primitive shoot in your area
and you meet some like minded folks and perhaps one of them can offer some one on one instruction. Otherwise just do like I did and start making bows
and asking questions on here.
Good Luck and keep us posted on yer progress eh.

i have an old south bend cane rod. i wonder if its worth anything probably not much it was probably mass produced but ti is still a very nice rod.

Sure you can fish it. Just look it over closely and make sure the varnish is good and the wraps aren't dried out. Other than that, as long as the ferrules fit well, it's good to go. I've restored several rods that were 70+ years old, so age doesn't really hurt a rod.

Dane thanks for posting and I'm glad yer back, still waiting to see what ya do with the Yooper Maple I sent ya ;D

Dana, that stave is such a beauty, I don't want to rush into it. I'm debating trying an American Long Bow, but not sure - what do you recommend for maple? I do have the finish already in mind, and want to keep the wood natural, no staining. I found an interesting Middle Eastern pattern I may try in various colors of India ink for the back. I hate to sound maudlin, but a special buddy deserves my best work.

Howdy.   I live near Benton City, SE part of Washington state.  I've been involved with archery for most of my life - about 50 years.   It has been mostly traditional and primitive archery except for a few years fiddling with the modern compounds.   I've made quite a bit of my own archery equipment.   I am a better flinttknapper and arrow maker than bowyer.    Last couple years I have been mainly focused on practicing horseback archery and improving my horsemanship.    I often shoot 700 to 1200 arrows per week practicing for the horseback archery. However, I still maintain my primitive archery interest and skills.   This winter I made 4 primitive bows, lots of arrows, pounded out a couple gallon bags of sinew,  and knapped quite a few obsidian points.    Yes, I am a hunter and always have been.   I usually hunt with one of my self bows or recurve bows for deer and elk.   However, I will use any legal weapon, including my trusty 12 gauge shotgun or my old 54 cal muzzleloader.   Attached is a photo of me shooting my twisted yew selfbow, which I finished this winter.

Hi my name is Nathan, I am completely obsessed with primitive archery. Been bending and snapping bits of wood on and off for years. A recent move to a new house with room for a small workshop has been like dying and going to heaven! This subject is fascinating.  I'm an Englishman living in Germany and can only hope that one day I can aspire to some of the awesome bows and tackle I see on this site. I hope soon to be able to post some pictures of nice looking sweet shooting bows.

Hi my name is Rich and I have been into bows since I was a child. I was distracted by wheely bows for a few years and even shot my only deer with one when I was 16 (1984). It was a 4 point muley and I shot it with a bow that only had a 40% let off, instinctively with a bear razor. I have never used sights. I have hunted tons of small game and always thought about bow hunting but just never had the time. Well your website changed it all. I have built 4 bows for my kids in the 5-15lb range. I have also built 2 bigger bows from red oak with the first one breaking and the second one being good at 68" n2n at 42 lbs. I was shooting for about 50lbs but messed up when I got in a hurry tillering. I am now working on a IPE with hickory backing that seems to be awesome. I bought 5 IPE staves and am making a bow for my brother in PA so that he cam come get some big muleys with me in the fall. I built a spine tester based on the info here and have 100 birch shafts to work through plus 12 rose shoots. I am totally addicted and have my man cave set up (spent way too much in bow making stuff  >:D but what the wife doesn't know wont hurt her). I just need to get some Osage. I will post some pics of my bows next week so that you can see my work and give me some pointers. I just wish I could make it out to TN this year, but hope to make it out next year (come hell or high water). Thanks all for the instruction.

Rich SLC Utah.

PS. Seeing Justin's post don't make me feel so odd at scavenging road kill for fur and sinew. I just hate passing it up (I have a similar haircut too but don't think it is a Utah thing).

Hi
My name is Clint. I live in western Kentucky. I am 32. I have hunted with a compound bow for years and want something more. Around two years ago I have started working hear and there on a self bow. I finally have one that I can hunt with. I finished it about a month ago. It is red oak . 50# @ 26". I plan on going to the Tenn clasic if at all possible. I live one and a half hours away. I would like some one to look at the tiller on my bow. I believe it bends too much in the handle area.
I have enjoyed reading the post on this site!
See ya

I am Chuck Jones of San Antonio, Texas.  I registered back in June of last year and have been in love with this hobby ever since.  I have had numerous attempts at bow making and some sucess.  It is really a let down when you are tillering the last few inches and she blow apart.  My attitude has been oh well and get another piece of wood to wittle on.  I have used hickory, red oad and ash with sucess.  I will just keep pluging away at it until I am out of wood.  I just picked up a piece of Aspen (really cheap) just to see what it would do.  It is bending well just curious if it will hold together.  It will be a very light bow the way it feels now.  This is a great site and the bowyers on this site have helped me a lot...much to learn...chuck

Hi my name is Deo and I live in Santa Cruz California. My first bow was a 48 in wood sinewed back bow at age 9, never owned a compound and i have always preffered primitive bows in Indian stlyle. I now shoot a 72 in hickory D bow i did not make. I haved made 4 bows none came out good (rushing in the tillering process) but i will not stop trying. I seem to do alot better in arrow making. I use wild rose, syringa, hazel, ninebark, shasta birch, viburnum, chockcherry and anything i can get that will make a good arrow. I fletch Indian style and I also flint knapp. I am still in the begining stages. But this summer I hope to go hunting with my own stone   arrows for costal black tales here in Santa Cruz. My goal is to eventually hunt with all my own gear 100% primitive.

Thanks for the welcome.  There is so much to learn and try.  I was walking thru Havor Freight the other day and I found some "Flax Twine" that I was thinking about to try for a backing.  My concern was it stated that it had no stretch.  A single twisted strand had a breaking strength rating of 39 lbs.  I am afraid with the "no stretch" that it might overpower the wood especially with the white woods that I am using at this time.  Still thinking about trying it...chuck

Ok, I guess it's about time to introduce myself as well  :-[

My name's Stefan, born in southern Germany not far from the former iron curtain (it still existed back then and things were less complicated than nowadays  ::))
I got quite a bit around in Germany (and Europe) with the german military, having had the chance to work with a few americans at a NATO HQ in Belgium.
Now I finally got back to the south and have been living in the (small) town of Ulm (half way between Munich and Stuttgart) for over three years. Here I started with archery and build my first bow in November 06 (Black locust, 70", 45#@28"). Since then I build a few bows of which about half still lives. This winter I finished a really nice rowan bow and shot a 28 target 3D course with. Unfortunately it blew a few days later on the first shot at our training range.
Right now I'm working simultanously on a rawhide backed osage and a BBY which (if it survived tillering) will receive a surprise facing.

Stefan

Hello all, my name is Joe and I enjoy making and shooting English Longbows.  Some I sell, some I keep for myself, and some I give out as gifts.

I live in Northwest Nebraska and another of my hobbies is building Traditional Muzzleloaders.  I enjoy both bow hunting and hunting with my muzzleloading rifles.  I take part in our local Fur Trade Days in and around Chadron Nebraska, I am a co-founder of the Traditional Muzzleloading Association, as well as the White River Brigade which is our local traditional muzzleloading club.

My son and I also take part in Archers Rest Target Archery League.  It is on the honor system and we have a good time shooting our longbows monthly and reporting our scores as we don't have a local archery club affiliate here where we live.  I believe the closest is 57 miles south of us and I'm not to sure but I believe they are mostly modern bow shooters there?

Anyway, it's great to be here!

Hello from Galveston Texas. I am a trad dabbler as well as a primitive builder. I got three under my belt. 2 duct tape backed unidentified wood kid bows and one that draws about 2,000 pounds @ 1in (work in progress). My attempts at grown up bows have been unsuccessful but this one seams to be working out OK. Well I hope it is like I said I am still working on it.

For a bow that may pull about 15-20 lbs is it fine. My boys have been hard on the bows but they still shoot good enough to keep them happy.  I used stucco tape on another and it was ok. It gets ugley as the corners curl. it hlso gets sticky when hot.

Hi Dana and Everyone,  Yeah, I'm a new guy, too. My name is Teddy Evans, live in Crested Butte, CO and have been enjoying PA for 3 yrs.. Growing up in Chattanooga,TN and playing in the hardwood forests made me want to be a native American and learn the skills they used to survive. I don't do well in this modern world (should not have dropped Computer science in college) and feel much better walking in the woods, whether hunting or not. We grew up as bird hunters and I didn't shoot a bow in earnest until I moved to CO and started elk hunting in 1974. I shot a compound for almost 30 yrs., but always used fingers. About 6 yrs. ago I bought a custom recurve and have killed a cow and 2 bulls with it. Now I really want to shoot a self bow. This spring we were in TN turkey hunting and visiting my Mom; I brought my chainsaw as I knew there were mature osage on the farm we hunt. After cutting logs out of a pile the landowner had cleared I decided to take them to Pappy for advice and to leave them there if he wanted them.  We also cut some cane, which we left with Pappy. When we stopped at Twin Oaks, my family and I were treated like royalty and we met many nice people who helped unload the osage. I don't remember all the names, but hope to see you again. Before we left that day Pappy and GregB presented us with an almost finished hickory bow and not being able to stay for the Classic gave me a crash course on how to complete the bow. We are on our way! My wife, Linda, and I are blessed with two boys, Sam (15) and Isaac (11) who love archery, bows and hunting. I  have worked on the CB Pro ski patrol for 21 yrs. and for myself in the summer doing stucco and carpentry. I started and am pres. of the local NWTF chapter which established National Archery in the Schools programs in the Crested Butte and Gunnison schools. We also set a 20 target 3-D range in the woods west of town each summer. All y'all (I'm serious) are welcome to come camp, shoot and enjoy the CO summer. You are welcome anytime. I grew up in the lumber business, earned a living as a logger and love wood. I hope I can make Pappy and Greg proud by doing a good job finishing his present, but can't wait to get my hands on a stave and create a bow from scratch. Thank you all !

Hello. I'm from right south of Wichita, Kansas. I am a self bow advocate in every sense and situation. Where I live primitive archers are very few and far between. For me there is no other way.  I have been making bows for about five years now. I had no idea until a few years ago that there was a whole community of us out there. I am pretty much dedicated to D bows, mostly Cherokee type. I have made five so far and they all shoot good. I shot a buck with one two years ago. No turning back now. I've recently started making rivercane arrows and I'll probably never shoot anything else. I have been subscribing to Primitive Archer.

Hi Folks! I am a 55 year resident of Eugene, Oregon.  Grew up loving the outdoors from the Pacific Ocean to the Cascades and on into the Blue Mts. and up into the Wallowa Mts. I started out at age 5 with a little stickbow and some arrows with metal tips running around with a coonskin cap on.  I guess Disney's presentation of Davey Crocket and Daniel Boone really impressed me.  Shot wheelbows for years. Picked up a recurve in elk camp up around the Strawberry Mts. 3 yrs. ago. Sold my compound and bought a recurve.  Have been making my own arrows out of cedar and sitka spruce and turkey feathers.  Got to thinking "you make the arrows, how come you don't make the bow?"  So, this is the next step in this journey.

Hi all, I am in North York, Ontario Canada. Just came on board the last few days to ask a question. Been making not too successful bows on and off for some time. If my memory serves me right my first was from a maple branch, butchers twine. Arrows from a Mock Orange bush tipped with slate from the roof and pidgeon feathers. The last one I shot at about 7 or 8 years old went over the house, the neighbors house and landed ??? that was in the late 40's yup ah sue is an oldster. Since then many blow up. hinge, slip a ring, or are broken by being over drawn by friends (2X). Never let a friend or anyone draw your self bow. I shoot Traditional and 3D as often as the weather permits. Two to three times per week with a local gang of mixed archers. By mixed I mean, self bows, traditional long and recurve and the few compound to round out the group. Our ages range from early teens to our mighty leader at 81 with his lady friend at 76 ( you don't want to shoot her for beer money at 20 yards). Make the odd and I say odd bow now and then. Gald to be in such august company and look forward to many chats and advice sharing.

hi guys, i'm a part cherokee part choctaw part german guy. i guess the melting pot worked. i live near the bear river in northern california. i grew up in the western states and as a boy i saw those juniper trees with those staves removed. i guess thats what sparked my initial intrest in indian archery. i tried to put that on hold. i was busy. a car came into the shop. in the back seat was a something narrow and long with an ark . i recognized a long bow in the back seat of a sedan . i was a wheel bow guy at the time. my buddies weren't interested sooo. i saw the mag. thank you p.r. you made my dream come true. you gave me the know how. thanks . can you teach me how to use the computer?  sincerely                   kenny

Support Group is exactly right.  :D       Good to see all the new people (I"m one myself).   I think this is great and I'm sure everyone else will too. It's pretty hard to find anyone in my daily life that shares the addiction (my wife will attest that it is in fact an addiction), so it's good that we have a place to come and talk to others like us.

hey.. james floyd here...i am a jawgya boy at heart and always will be... right now i am stationed at ft hood... just got back in december of 07 from Iraq....headed back again this december.... building a few elk antler three peice takedowns for the rafle we had at memoeial day bbq... i picked up this obsession from my grandfather who was a naval corpman in korea... i am a combat medic in 1st cavalry division and have been picking up more skill with bowyering since i picked up my first issue of PA in may of last year... i feel that man should get back to his primitive roots in order to make himself a better man. you can only advance so far before you cant advance any more..... howeevr.. to rediscover roots in things primtive is to make a primal connection to the great earth mother and the skyfather... maybe oneday there will be a calling from nature or mans own stupidity that requires the skills we learn here to be brought back into the light as a means of keeping ourselves alive... anyhoo... may you all have the blessings of the great mother and father and may your hands stay skilled in al pursuits

Support group sounds about right. Here's an idea for you administrators. Start an alternate web site for newby bowyers wives. In it, among all the decorating ideas you can secretly install propaganda designed to brake down there resistance to me getting some man-cave time >:D

postman... we dont have anthing that we slather on... we do have the chitosan dressings made from ground shrimp shells.... they work great in theory... but the thing is that in combat they arent that great as far as wound packing goes... the thought is to cut a plug the size of the hole from a peice of this stuff and put it in... when the chitosan comes in contact with blood or any other fluid... it turns to a pudding type substance.. this puts presuuree on the artery and also helps as a coagulant... the problem is that there is usually so much blood that it slips and the bleeding continues.... then we have quick clot .... this hemostatic bandage is used for arterial bleeds in the groin and armpit region mostly... again.. in theory it works wonders... you just shove these little packs of powder in the bleeding hole till you cant get anymore in... and as soon as the blood hits the powder.. the powder undergoes a chemical reaction to the saline in your blood and super heats... cauterizing the wound... but in doing so they cook a portion of the muscle and other tissues around the wound... so if you are in the clinical setting and you uhave time to use it... its great.... but in combat nothing beats a combat application torniquet and some kerlix gauze rolls

i also want to apologize for any rude or politically incorect statements i made

Hello all, I'm brand spank'n new to PA. I am a  55, disabled and love to carve wood (mainly sculptures). I live in south central Nebraska. I find most of my wood that  I carve along riparian stands and wind breaks. Osage  and western red cedar are plentiful. I carve with gouges, spoke shaves, chain saw, band saw, grinders, sanders and a variety of home made knives. Love to make little sticks out of big sticks. Looking forward to building my first hunting bow. I would appreciate any and all suggestions (friendly) on suggest reading as it pertains to this message board and any other destinations on the net that can help me get going

i agrees with dana... the compound is an evil contraption that takes all the fun outta hunting... its like a rifle with a short range... the primitive bows are art in and of themselves... and the art of hunting with them... or even stump shooting is an addiction that is healthy for all.. it gives a sense of accomplishment when your stick you have been whitlin on for so long brings down food for the table.... sinew to futher your craft, hide to clothe your self in and antler and bone to make tools or jewelry with... wel;come one and all.. you will find that with in these webpages you are talking to some of the finest gentlemen and a few ladies that ever walked this planet

Hi, My name's Jon. I'm 22 and I live in Lithia, Fl. I am pretty new to archery, my preference for old timey equipment led me to break out an old recurve bow and I find it fascinating. It is fiberglass and I like natural materials and so ultimately I ended up here. I am mostly a lurker as I am in the learning and research phase but I'll let you guys know once I get a bow built. Between this forum and The Bowyers Bible I'm sure to find inspiration. I look forward to seeing you guys often.

Hello Primitive Archers!  ;D  I am Jesse S. wife, Angie.  I also live in Wisconsin.  I enjoy shooting bows, but do not do it too often.  I do get to enjoy the craft of bows on the daily, however!  They fill the house!  There's one hanging from the light in the middle of my study room at the moment! :o  But, sigh, I guess i wouldn't have it any other way......

I've heard much about some of you, especially those who attended the classic this year, hopefully I will be able to go next year if the ticks don't scare me off.  Look forward to chatting with you all and critiquing your tiller! ;)

Been hunting since I was 14, serious about bow hunting since I was 22. Started making my own bows in 1998 or 1999, have been hunting with them since 99. Although I was moderately successfull with compound on deer and elk, I have taken no big game with a home made bow.

Good thread DanaM. Now if we can only get some of our old time users to fill in at least their state we should be OK. I wonder if when filling out the registration to log onto PA for the first time, it was mandatory to do at least that. It take a lot of extra time to check a persons state and then if it is not there you have to ask them to try and help answer their question.

You think it's hard to hunt there...come to the biggest of the Lower 48....and see how easy it is......Texas is the worst when it come to Public Land....and Leases are outrageous too....less than 3% of this Massive State is open to the Public....it's a Shame

I'm  48 yrs old and currently reside in Thorne Bay Alaska. I started shooting a bows as far back as I can remember. Shot bows all through my youth, as kids we used to ride our bicycles to a archery range in Mt. Vernon Wa. Then next thing you know, bows grew pulleys, weights, sights and other things I can't bring myself to speak of! Now if that weren't bad enough arrows started being made from strange metals that must contain a lot of gold because they sure got spendy.
I still have a old 45# Howatt high speed (recurve) I love to shoot.
Sure I bought a few of the wheeled bows, just never liked shoot'n them, you see they make my hand that holds the bow bounce as I draw and since thats when I aim and release is when my thumb comes home to my ear. compounds just were not right for me.
Well now I just learned that great bows can be made from wood, I've made a few shooters and now I'm looking to make a bow for next years spring black bear hunt. So far a 70# crabapple and a 60# red oak board bow are the best I've done.
Since I'm having fun learning the bowyers art I think it will be a good hobby for a lot of years to come.

I hunt deer and elk with a recurve or longbow every year but don't get too serious about it. I make glass/carbon t/d recurves and wood flatbows. I'll post some pics of my latest bows once i figure out this website.

Hi!

I'm a Italians descendant living at Brazil, Sao Paulo City, and I have really passions about primitive ways of life, I have excused much time time to learning about ancient archery and unfortunately not found many brazilian people in this art.
I have 31 years old, and a beautiful 2 years  blues eyes son, that look to the full-moon and say-me: beautiful ball "Papa", then, I stay happy, and I sure that my blood and passions are in his blood too.
Excuse me all for my bad english, but i think everyone understand-me.

Thanks for all,

"Centi' anni " to All - (~ may you live 100 years...) Italian and non-Italians alike. Besides, most Italians have DNA from all over europe, mid-east, and North Africa, ect.... - seems to have been 1 or 2 conflicts there over the years ;D
My Grandpa Salvatore even had Red hair! ???
In the book "The Sicillian" Puzo describes how each family traditionally painted a house based on early ancestry   - blue for norman, for example (I think...)  but trying to tell them They were not sicillian would have been ... a bit.... dicey..... ;D

Hey  - OZTrad....read somewhere on here y'all got introduced locust trees down there - good bow wood, they tell me - plus PLENTY of snakes for backing ;D

Hello all.  Been lurkin' for a few days, and I thought I'd take the plunge.  I got interested in archery about 1972 when I found my fathers old Ben Pearson Deerslayer, hangin' from the joists in the cellar.  That Christmas my father bought me a little laminated recurve and pretty much have been interested on and off for 36 years.

About 3 years ago I decided to start makin' bows.  I've made 6 bows and have gotten one shooter.  4 broke.  1 got so much limb twist, I gave up.  My 1 shooter is a red oak flat bow, 35lbs. @ 28 in.

I really appreciate this site.

Howdy all,

Mike from Anchorage.  Just getting into archery with my kids and have been exploring the primitive side of things.  Money is tight so the appeal of making a bow for cheap is both fun and practical.   Currently have a Red Oak bow that I bought unfinished.  Put the final touches on it this week with some finishing and a leather grip.  35# @ 28 for the bow.  Also been working on an Atlatal as well.

Hope to do some small game hunting this fall/winter with my girls.  We still need a lot of practice before we can hope to hit a bunny at 20 yards though.  ;D

This site is a wealth of information and I thank you all in advance for the knowledge you share.

Hi:

I am Rev. Dr. Joel C. Brothers, ND, SHD. I am a Traditional Naturopath and have a clinic in Cleveland, Tn. I specialize in Herbology, Reflexology, Hydrotherapy, and Therapudic Massage. I am also an Ordained Minister, and have a street Ministry, and I do Sacraments, Blessings, Weddings, Sevices, Communion, Confessions, Sick Calls and Exorcisms. I am one of the Chaplains of the YMCA. I build traditional bows, and atlatls.  I also hunt with them, as well as with my .62 cal. Blowgun, my slingshot and Rabbit Sticks.

I have always been a history buff, but when I was a youngster in Elementary School, I read about the exploits of Thor Heyerdahl and his raft, the Kon-Tiki. He drifted across the Pacific in his raft to prove that Polynesia had been settled by voyagers from Peru, instead of Asia. I caught the bug of wanting experience history, instead of just reading about it. So, I have been on sailing ships, I camp with little of no equipment, use ancient methods to hunt and fish, and belong to several re-enactment groups for the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and the Middle Ages Combat groups. I also fence. I have learned that the 'Primitive' People were no so primitive after all. They just used a different type of technology. People really haven't changed in the 500,00 years we've been here. We just got newer toys.

I look forward to sharing experience and knowledge with all of you.

I just stumbled in here, a raw recruit to the land of bowmakers.   I can tell by the pictures I am surrounded by some skilled and experienced makers.    Today I cut and planed my first bow, and it feels great.  I am a violinmaker by trade so this is a different sort of woodworking than I usually do.

Lots of Yoopers and Trolls here,(Michiganders, Upper Penninsula and Below the Bridge) wonder how many I'd recognize on the street.  I lived in Iron River for twenty years, then got smart and moved to Louisiana.

Looking forward to being a part of this fine forum!!

I'll wait out the occasional hurricane.  Gustav got our attention here, then we nailed on some new shingles, picked up the yard and went back to work.

New to the site and wanted to say Hi. Name's Tony. Been involved with archery for a number of years now but just recently started working with primitive equipment. Started building my first hickory selfbow a few months ago. Only have a few hours each week to work on it. Doing this with hand tools only so it's taking a while but I am please with the progress. Seems like I am learning more about the wood this way. Look forward to getting a lot of advise from the "old heads" here.

Hi,
My name is Matt Scott and l am new to this site. The reason l joined this site is because l want to learn more about primitive archery and to meet people with the same hobbies l have and to make friends. l've hunted my whole life with modern weapons and have always heard of people making and hunting with wooden bows and thought that was funny, hunting animals as big as moose and trying to kill it with a stick. Until one day l had an urge to make one and see what it was all about! So l went through the steps l've seen people do when making one and broke about 7 before l had one completed. And remember that feeling l felt holding it in my hand. lt felt like it was apart of me, an extension of my own hand and the history that came with it. From the indians that used it for survival to the men that used it for war and in a way l am apart of it.

Hei.
I live i Norway, a few years I lived on the land of Einar Tambarskjalve (about 1000 years after him), Melhus Norway. I'm exploring the wast world of bows and my urge to learn more started with the longbows of the vikings. I'm now into the asian bows, composite, and I don't see how the bow-topic, i.e. history, the traditions in building, shoothing etc. can be empty. Looking forward to many years of shooting and reading. I own two bows, one 76" longbow lamiate, 70lb.@32, and a flatbow 68", 56lb@32. The flatbow is the first bow which I did'nt break during tillering, (attempt #6).

Hope you excuse my poor english writing.

Hi all, my name is Dave Bell, I'm 15 and from Sunderland in England. Been into archery for just over a year now, and have been making my own bows since then. Made about 7 or 8 ELBs so far, got a few more in progress at the minute. My main interest is in Medieval war bows, and I'm currently working up to shooting heavier weights. I'm shooting a 65# tri-lam bow I made myself at the moment. This me shooting it:

Hello all!

My name is Josh and I have been working on bows on again - off again for about 12 years now.  I just relocated to the metro Detroit area.  My interest in bow making started when I was 15 and for some reason I decided to try and make a bow out of a green apple branch.  It actually worked and I have been hooked every since!  Although my apple bow eventually dried out and broke  :(  I started reading and learning and getting better every since.  I must have broke a good half dozen or so to start off with due to bad material, bad workmanship and bad advice.  But honestly I learn the most from every one that fails.

Life is starting to get back to normal for me so I am itching to start turning out some bows.  It seems like I have made a nice bow for everyone else but myself, lol.  I have the ugliest and slowest bow on the block.  So I am now ready to dive into my stash of 10+ year old seasoned Osage.   ;D

Take care,
-Josh

My name is Jonathan and I'm from New Zealand. I'm very new to all this. I haven't attempted to make a bow before and haven't' used one for awhile. I used to be a member of an archery club a couple of years back and have always had a desire to try and make a bow. Upon discovering that elm, i tree in relative abundance on my parents property can be used for making self long bows I found my Summer project. I will probably not be too active here, but when i start I'll keep you posted.

Hi Ya'll- I'm Terry, living in Nw Arkansas.  I've been making selfbows for about 11 years now and have been venturing off in making arrows from rough stock and rivercane lately.  Last March, I gave a couple of demo's on straightening cane and making antler nocks at Ojam. Flint knapping has been about the most frustrating thing I have tried, but I'll keep at it.  I just love all the primitive skills and am absolutely impressed with the skills shown in Primitive archer!
I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.......Terry

My name is Chester I am a attorney in Western North Carolina in between asheville and charlotte, live on the edge of Polk county on a tree farm. Been making bows for about two years, just selfbows, mostly osage from a friend in ohio, tried a few hickory and working on a red cedar now along with about ten osage staves, just cant seem to concentrate on just one at a time. I love this site, have lurked here and some of the other sites for a while, but this seems to be the best for what i am in to (selfbows and pictures of selfbows). I love this message board so much information and great ideas, hopefully i will be able to contribute at some point too.

My name is Mark Thornton. I made the switch to trad archery almost 2 years ago after 17years of bowhunting with compounds. I have now gotten the bow building urge and have purchased a read oak board to make my first attempt at a bow after deer season is over. Hopefully I can make something shootable. I figured this was the place to go to learn the how to's of bow building. I am from Wetumpka, AL(just north of Montgomery). Some of you may have spoken to me on the LW(tdog) or Tradgang(pseman).

I hope to post some pics of my new bow in the next couple months.

Okilydokily here goes.

My name is Ragi, folks prolly remember me from long ago. I have been a long time member on most of the big archery sites. I somehow ended up walking away for a while. RL was sucking and the divorce lawyers were picking my pockets.

So I am now getting back to what I love though it is slow.

I will be around but since I now work for a living instead of being self unemployed, I wont be around as much. :(

Hi, my name is Niels and I am a photographer from Hamburg in Northern Germany - yes, it is the Hamburg with the legendary Reeperbahn  ;D
The nick "Cooper" is just the translation of my last name in German.
I am shooting with traditionell bows for about six years and building them for five and a half - you see this virus was to strong for me.

Till now I have only made laminate bows and board bows with textile backing.
No selfbows so far - but I will try sometime, I promise  ;)

Hm, I remember, there was a rule - something about "child friendly" and so on, … yes, here it is:

Rule #4: This is a family oriented site and we want it to be child friendly so the use of curse words or foul language is not tolerated. Keep your language clean and respectful.
I think this rule applies to photos too - so: No photos from the Reeperbahn possible  ;D

Heya

Yeah I am still making arrows and bows etc. sorta. I dont have the time and energy I did so everything happens much slower than it used to. My arrow company is kinda sorta in suspended animation for the moment.

It is good to be back, now I need to make it a habit again.

Name is Maxwell from Centennial Colorado. Great place to live but a hardwood wasteland. Found three nice pieces of red oak in a dumpster last summer and decided I'd make a bow - broke the first two pieces, thrid one worked really well and I caught the bug. 7 total bows so far and working on my 1st RD. Still a novice but really enjoying it. Only downside to boyering is that I didn't hardly fly fish at all last summer - is this habit forming or what??

Howdy All,  My name is Chuck, and I am just getting into this.  I live in Eagleville, CA, in the beautiful Surprise Valley.  I am into buckskinning and shooting muzzleloaders.  Recently, some of the guys got into primitive archery.  I tried it two weeks ago, and now I am hooked!  I just bought a couple of pignut hickory self bows, and I'm gonna go out and shoot them tomorrow.  I'm sure I will be asking you guys for advice and things. So, thanks in advance!   Chuck

I've got a lot to learn, but what a great time it was shooting today.  I have shot bows before but never totaly primitive.  It had been so long since I had shot a bow, that it was like learning all over again.  I'm glad I went primitive
There is just something better about making your own gear, and going simple.  That's why I like buckskining so much.  Now with primitive archery added to our clubs list of activities, I like it better than ever!

Hi all,

I'm Nicolas, living in Belgium for 26 years now and born in Greenwich, Connecticut just about 35 years ago. Sorry for my English, as I forgot most of it...
Married, 3 absolutely perfect little girls of 4, 2 and 0,5 years old.

I started to make bows I'd say 2 years ago, but at a quite "slow" rythm (around 6 or 7 adult bows till now). I also make bows for kids quite often as I have plenty of bowhunting freinds with little boys who want to hunt "as dady" :)

Mainly working on yew till now, as it as about all I could find  ;D, dreaming of osage without daring to buy some without "touching" it...

I think that's about it, I also fool around with atlatl  :P

See ya,

Nic

I hope to start working on a bow soon, and knew I'd better register for the message boards, as I'm sure I'll have lots of questions :)

15 or so years ago, I built a bow with my godfather.  He is a buckskinner and a primitive archer.  I was just a kid then, but I remember the joy and satisfaction of the first pull on that bow after so many hours of work.
4 years ago, after not being pulled for a few years, it decided to explode.  I really wanted to tear up and cry!!  Now that I'm older and have better skill with my hands, I'm starting up again.

Thanks in advance for your patience with my "noob" questions!

Hey, I'm Nick, I live in friesland, northern part of the Netherlands. I've been making bows for 2 years, wich came in waves, some months I was totally into bowmaking, some month I totally wasn't :p
I'm in my biggest 'wave' I've had yet, and I really enjoy it :) can't imaging this is going to stop, until I've cut down every tree in my neighboorhood ;) I shoot a little, for various reasons, the arrows I've made broke very quickly, I lost them even faster, and after making a dozen of boo arrows, wich are unbreakable, I found only 3 of them match. Other excuses are the lack of a target, and the fact my arrows dig-in when I'm shooting at short range (flat trajectory)

I used to post on paleoplanet, but I found this being a very interesting forum. going to sign up for PA newsletter asap, probably today ;)

greetings,

Nick

Hey guys, name is Al, or Q (i like the letter Q) Im 23 years of age living in MI; I was born in TX but raised in South America, Peru to precise.

I've been following everyone's, advice, adventures, and misadventures, from the shadows for quite some time; yielding many a good results (improving upon the first and only bow i've made so far)  I decided to take the plunge and join in the fun, because i plan on making more bows throughout the spring and summer (no working in the non-heated garage during a Michigan winter, thats just not happening)

I'd post a pic of my bow, but its undergoing major repairs, it is a real short (47") black walnut, backed with artificial sinew and covered with silk (have to thank Justin's build along for the idea) and all glued up with animal glue, nocks are road killed deer bone (it was hours fresh so she went straight to the freezer :D ). Pulls low 20 some #  (beginners are indeed prone to over-shave than to under-shave the wood)

Hope I can learn from all of you, and maby, eventually, even help those who r treading on the roads I once traveled

I'm new here - been lurking for about a week or so I think. I have a couple Red Oak linen-backed board bows under my belt already and about two or three other bow projects in the works. I'm into archery solely for the fun of making and shooting bows and having fun shooting defenseless paper targets at the archery range. Neither my wife nor I hunt. I'm primarily a hobbyist woodworker and I most enjoy using hand tools to shape my bows almost exclusively. I have the first three volumes of TTBB and I enjoy perusing them to look at all the interesting variations in bow design. I think I'm most fascinated by historical, Native American, and bows made by other primitive cultures. I'll also admit I kinda like fantasy bows and crossbows as well. I'm just wishing I'd discovered this hobby a few years ago rather than smack at the beginning of middle age. Oh yeah, and I'm located in Chicago, Illinois - but not for long I hope.

Hi, I'm Ann Marie from Pennsylvania. Would someone make it stop snowing already!!  I just got my first bow last October as a wedding present from my dear hubby! How romantic!  He thought it was funny when he kept telling everyone about the big 'diamond' he got me, then showed up with the bow!  ha ha ha  So, now I'm practicing and trying to learn everything there is to learn about the sport.  I've been hunting for many years with a rifle, but never a bow. Should be fun. I've just been looking around in here for a while. Thought I'd say 'hi' and share my embarrassing moment. LOL   Nice to meet you all.

O.K, this is my first time on one of these forums so I'm still learning how to use it.
Greetings from Ontario Canada!!  I am starting my first bow. It's going to be a horse bow. Since I do not have the luxury of a bandsaw or belt sander ect.,,, I will be using traditional hand tools to construct my bow ( coping saw, files ect.) Hopefully, with a lot of perserverence, and a little good fortune, it will turn out well.........we'll see!!

Looking forward to learning from all you folks.

Hi, my name is Dave.  I'm from Richmond, KY.  I joined this site about a month ago and said WOW!  I still say wow about everyday.  The folks on here are the most helpful I've ever seen on any website.  So far I"ve made 2 trades and am starting on my second bow.

I've hunted since I was 7.  I got hooked on deer hunting at 14.  Back then seeing a deer, even a doe was an amasing thing here in KY.  I've owned bows most of my life.  I just never hunted with them seriously.  They were an excuse to scout for deer with a slight possibility that one would come within range.  When my wife and I married, bought a farm and built a house; I bought a new wheelie.  Still, I used it primarily for scouting and getting outdoors to enjoy nature.  Last season I got serious about bow hunting.  I took two deer with an arrow.  I was hooked.  Even during firearm season I took the bow out.  Hunting with a rifle doesn't have the same appeal to me anymore.

So, the natural progression is to hunt with a bow I've built myself.  I've wanted to build a bow for 15 years or longer.  With the generous help I've recieved from folks on this site, I'm sure I'll have a self-made bow to hunt with next deer season.

Howdy, I've been lurking around here for a while and finally decided to get an account.

I'm from Oklahoma, smack dab in the middle. I've only gone hog hunting, but I do that a lot. I'm looking to get into other ways of taking game and different game as well.

I hadn't been very interested in becoming a bowyer until my cousin discovered that he was blesses with straight growing osage orange on his new ranch.

This looks like a great place to learn from those that are ages ahead of me.

Hey how's it goin, name's Chris but my friends call me captyn so ya'll are welcome to do the same. posted an intro in announcements but was directed here to make myself known to the site as well. Im from Centerville,Tx (Pop. 900 or so) and I won't be mad if you never heard of it. Love the country and the wild. ppl think I was born too late, lol

As hedge up there said hunting with a rifle isn't for me anymore, never hunted with a bow and I figure if I'm going to I might as well make it too! I remember a couple times I was out in the woods w/ my .257 Roberts and came so close to a deer I coulda hit it with a rock but couldn't pull the trigger cuz it didn't seem fair anymore. I mean almost anyone can shoot a gun after all and hit something.

anyways thats all I got for now! Glad to be here!

Hi, my name is Scott. I am from Indiana, Pennsylvania.  I signed up a couple days ago. I have been on a different archery site for a year, but this site is more to my liking.

I started traditional archery roughly a year and a half ago. I started making arrows shortly after that, it wasn't enough. Then I started making bows, its a blast! I am working on number six, this one is for my brother, try to get him hooked.

I just joined the message boards.  My name i Brian.  I'm a Yooper (Marquette) from like a few other members from what I see.  I'm into a lot of traditional things, Anishnabe culture, blacksmithing etc.. I am reading up and planning on making my first bow soon.  Still going over designs and thinking about wood choice.  Hopefully I'm going to use something local like Ash or Birch.  I'm trying to gather info on how to make a Saami 2 wood bow which is probably pretty tough for a first one but it is what interests me.

My name is Grunt. I've built around 15 bows, broke a couple and I'm having fun and learning a lot. I have made a living turning bowls and making wood sculpture for the past 25 years and I have a good sized studio plum stocked with my toys [ tools]. I was pretty involved in Buckskinning years ago and was a member of the American Mountain Men. Most of my hunting has been with flintlocks but now I seem to be drawn to more primitive weapons. I tie and fish my own fly patterns here in the NC mountains. I'm starting to build my own arrows. I am a Vietnam USMC combat vet and I work with veterans of the current conflict one day a week at the VAMC in Asheville NC. Whew thats enough!!
Glad to be aboard, Grunt

Another newbie here, though I've been lurking for about a month.  My name is Jason, I live in Parkville, MD.  I just made my first bow, 68"tip to tip hickory selfbow, 55#@26", this January in a class at a local nature center (photos below).  It's been a number of years since I shot a bow and this is the heaviest draw I've ever shot.  I was surprised how smooth the draw is, how fast it shoots the arrows and how powerful they hit the target.  I'm looking forward to trying it out hunting.

Now I've got the bow bug and I've already started on a red oak board bow for my 2nd.  Just thought I'd say hi instead of lurking.

Howdy all,

I just joined up, my name is Frank from upstate NY.

Went to the Whittingham Rendevous in NJ this past Saturday and found everyone there very nice.  I had shot my Ben Pearson Colt quite a bit when I was about 15-20 years old (I'm 54) and picked it up again last year.  I was a little apprehensive about going to an event as I didn't know what to expect and I am just getting back into archery.  i am very excited about PA magazine and the opportunity to meet some archers and learn what I can about making equipment or anything else related to traditional archery/primitive archery.

Thanks to the Appalachian Bowment for putting on such a great event and giving me an opportunity to come out and get my feet wet again!

My name is Scott and I live in North Carolina but I am really from Pittsburgh, Pa.  I just recently met up with some primitive archers and was taken with their ways.  One was nice enough to trade me a hickory stave and help me lay out the pattern.  I love the idea of making my own stuff.  I have several other "Traditional Bows" on the wall but this is my first attempt at a selfbow.  I have read a good bit both here and on other sites about it and its is now time to just do it.

Thanks for all of the tutorials and willingness to share info.

I went to OJam with one of my buddies this year, last time I shot a bow was when I was 10 and I don't know how to hunt, but was excited to see someone make a bow again. I ended up forking out the cash for some tools and an Osage stave and now I am hooked. Thought I would sign up here, so I could keep up with everything and learn. If anyone here is from Oklahoma I would be glad to hear from them, because a large part of what I enjoyed was hearing the older guys talk and learning from them. I am not a "new folks,"  but I sometimes go for weeks without submitting or commenting, so here I am.  My name is Dan Spier.  I live in Marietta, Georgia, USA, just outside Atlanta.  I am a retired football coach and English teacher who has been building bows about 15 years.  I started out with board bows, then went to staves--hickory, then osage--learned to chase a ring and all that.   Then I wanted to learn to sinew-back, then bamboo-back, then back with other woods.  I get really fancy sometimes, then sometimes I go all the way back to making bows as primitively as possible.  I am also a flintknapper and wildlife artist.  I hunt with my primitive bows and arrows, and photograph wildlife also.  I have started many people out in making bows and arrows, and I love to do that.  If you ever need any help with anything, let me know.  My handle is "DirtyDan."

Hello,

Just a little history about me. About a week ago my friend told me about this site and about making bows. I decided that I could make a bow. So, I sat down and with some instructions from my friend I made my first bow. Its a long bow measuring 66" and is made from red oak, at 30" draw it is about 30 pounds, but should increase with a little heat treating. Unfortunatly it will be tonight before I can upload the pictures, since my wife just had a baby and we are at the hospital. I live in Texas but am stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas at the moment.

Hello folks thanks for making this exchange possible. I live in Sharpsburg, Ga.
I make knives as a hobby and work for Taylor Archery. Jim Taylor makes finely Crafted
Laminated wood Longbows, and Longbow kits, Scout bows, Recurves, and kid bows.
I plan to try my hand at making a Longbow someday, but I have a lot to learn. I have
been shooting a longbow and a recurve for over 40 years. Man that just dated me!
I also went very far down that other road and have owned a number of wheelies
over the years. For the past several years I have even hunted at times with a lowly
Crossbow made of aluminum and fiberglass. "Forgive me Fathers for I have sinned. "
I am now back in the fold. The offending devices have been disposed of. My longbow
that I hunt with now is a Red Cedar Bow backed with Hickory and a laminated Cedar grip.
I will post a picture when I get a chance to take one. Thanks again and I look forward
to the fellowship.

Hi.

I met some of you guys in Pasadena last month when I showed up at the meet. I had a Hickory Board I needed some tillering advice on. Ken, thanks for the advice. Alex, thanks for introducing me to scrapers and scraping. I've just scraped  - must be 8 rings off a stave. Painful, but zen. The Irish guy with the flute! Sorry, I forgot your name - but not your face or your friendliness!! Thanks for welcoming me.

The hickory is my second bow. It shoots pretty good but is low weight.  (first is pretty much unmentionable).

I've got the bug and am pretty much a goner. This is a great place - with great people and I just want to say I'm very proud to join.

Thanks,
George

I am from south of St. Louis.  A long time archery hunter, I am just returning to where I started many years ago!  I read here for a while, and then went out to the garage and pikced a red oak board to whittle on.  That is about as far into making bows as I have gotten so far.   A red oak board bow that pulls about 15 pounds at 31 inches.  It is consistant and pleasant to shoot using a string I made out of synthetic sinew.   I managed to learn a few things making this one, and look forward to learning many more.
Nice to meet you all!

Hello to all PAers

My name is Sam, I'm from northern BC, but I live and work in Taichung, Taiwan.
I've lived here for over 8 years, was a teacher and now a translator.

I've been reading this forum for a long time. And I remember the first PA magazine I found in my home town many years ago now. I've been trying to build bows and arrows for about 3 years, and I'm very slow. Getting materials here is very challenging! My "Number 2" is so far a shooter, linen backed Chinese elm long bow taken from beams in an old house slated for demo. I'm currently working on a Dragon Eye (aka Longyan; related to Lychee) stave that is very dense with wavy interlocking grain. This tree was taken from the back yard of the same house as above! If it works out I'll be happy to post pics, I'm going for something similiar in design to Gordon's Hazelnut bow - but it may get a bamboo back, rings are very indistinct on this wood. My arrows are all bamboo.

Huge thanks to everyone who helps out, especially the build-a-longs; huge job posting those. And I look forward to getting more involved with the forum.

Sam

Archery is completely new to me and i would like to have a go at making some bows.

Thank YOU ALL for the valuable information on this site.

regards
