Title: Blacklocust stave dilema
Post by: Sticks on January 28, 2019, 09:10:14 pm
Ive been waiting for a BL stave and it arrived today, its a beautiful piece of wood BUT it came with a 6 inch grip cut in that's 1 inch wide and limb width is 13/8 wide so no D bow and not much to work with as a flatbow.I had no idea it was coming like this and am not sure what to do with it,got any ideas for me Dave.

Can you return the stave since it is not what you wanted with shipping shared by you ,and the seller? If not you still have options to get a good bow out of that stave.

How long is it and what draw length and weight are you shooting for? IMO, 1 3/8" is a bit narrow for locust.

The stave is 68 inches and I draw 26 I would like to get 50 to 55# out of it at 26 inches .

I'd leave it full length. With locust you'll have to take it slow and easy and not get ahead of yourself. If you hinge a limb it will fret. I think what you have can make the bow you want. Also, black locust reacts well to belly tempering so later in the process if you see the stave taking on set. temper the belly.

Depending on how the handle has been roughed in you can still make it move a bit through the handle even if it's narrower.  That's quite a bit of length relative to draw length you have,
