It's supposed to grow in my area, but damned if I can find it yet. Until I do, I'm keeping a stave or two of good pacific yew in reserve to trade for some serviceberry.

Talk to High Desert!  It helps to be near the coast though, I think )-w( (lol)!

It can look a lot like Ocean Spray. in fact the first piece I cut I thought it was OS until I got home. It was growing in the middle of an OS clump. Once you've found one it can make it easier to pick out. The round leaves are my clue.

				Ok thanks that's helpful

Gotta wait for the leaves to fully come out to identify it. Be patient and you’ll see it all over.

I find it in the same kind of area that OS likes. The area I gather in is 35-40 year old second growth. Saskatoon(serviceberry) grows tall in that stuff and the leaves seem to be only at the top so "look up, look way up".  ;D

Eastern and Western serviceberry are different, same genus, different species. I could probably find a suitable Eastern serviceberry tree to cut if you'd be interested in it. The Eastern variety are understory trees here where the Western variety is more of a multi-stemmed shrub.

I don't think it grows here much. I expected to find it last spring, and I looked hard. But nada. I just haven't found the right pocket I guess.

It does. It’s about as prevalent as OS. Oval shaped leaves that are slightly serrated.

				Ok I'll keep looking. Thanks!

I have a stave from a 4" tree that has been sitting in a corner for more than 10 years.

			-
I'd be jazzed to find a 4" serviceberry!

			-
That’d make a big ole arrow!

			-
				It'd make a good bow, I think

In eastern Washington I find it a bit lower in elevation than OS. Bigger stuff is around water. Berries are on now. Easiest to find in April when in bloom.

Where are you located? We might be able to find some or work something out.

Sorry I just saw this. I'm in Southern Oregon, but decided to keep looking for OS around here
