Do you heat/boil and then strain before applying?
-
I have never heated it or strained it and it has worked well for me. but straining will help get bits of grit out.
-
I did not heat it. I did strain it through an old shirt
-
I just applied it. Jawge

no heating for me. 1 quart of white vinegar, 1 pad of 0000 steel wool and a week or two of dissolving. Don't put the lid on tight while it's dissolving, it builds up pressure. I might try straining it, hadn't done that before...

Good point, Weylin. It is a chemical reaction which generates Hydrogen gas which is flammable. Jawge

I don't know about iron/vinegar solution but when I use iron nitrate or ferric nitrate I let the stain dry and go over the area with a heat gun to blush the stain, this changes the color to a rich brown. After the finish is applied the color and grain really stands out.
Not bows but here is how it works;
Left side stained, right side blushed and the finished wood in the lower picture.

Ooh, cool. I want to try a heat gun on the steel/wool vinegar stain to see if it effects it.

oh neat, I am gonna try the heat trick too! I wonder if it will do anything with the iron oxide finish?
