Title: Sturgeon Backed Cascara (full draw added)
Post by: Keenan on April 11, 2008, 04:26:05 am
A few years ago Brian Melton posted about Cascara as a great but very unkonwn bow wood. The thread was about "sleeper woods" That is "a bow wood that few know about with excellent quallities". I've stated a few times that I've learned alot from him on that post. Though I've only made a few from Cascara, I've been very impressed with the results.
This is a Sturgeon backed Cascara character bow that I made for my wife for Valentines day. Though I didn't  meet the deadline, and it was only half way done,She still loved it and was very understanding knowing that it was made for my very best friend.
It is 59" NTN and 41 lbs. at 25" and has Mule deer tips. I'm still trying to get her to do the full draw pics but she's being a little camera shy. Maybe by this weekend.  Keenan

Keenan, you really do beautiful work! Great looking bow all around from the tips, to the skins, and I especially like the knots on the belly side! Real beauty! ;)

Keenan, you are a master of the character bow - it shows by the expert way you handled those knots on the belly.

Thank you all for the nice compliments.  ;D ;D  Thought maybe some would be getting burned out on sturgeon with antler tips. ::) ::). I had started all three of those bows at the same time and was thinking one or two might not make it.  The sturgeon did it's job well and somehow they all survived.
Gordon,  Thank you I do think the sturgeon skin gets more credit then my bowyer skins though. ;)   Keenan

Impressive bow Keenan. I love the grip.  I for one will never get sick of seeing your sturgeon skins.  If you feel like you are doing to many of the sturgeon skins you can always send them to me.  ;D  I know what you mean about the wife being bashfull when it comes to full draw pictures.  I almost had my wife conviced to draw her bow for the full draw pictures. Of coarse she wanted to change her clothes first because she had been cleaning.  In the end she said no and I had to hold my wife's bow for the pictures. Justin

Justin thanks,  I know the feeling, My wife gave me a glare when I said I wanted her to dress up in deer skins and stand on the horse at full draw ;D
Rich,  That yotee is very trained indeed, but not much personality.

Thanks John

 Stick  ;D
Oldbow, Thanks Don I'll try to get her to dress up and get on the horse tommarow so you don't have to dig threw the thread for the pics.;D
John, Living within a few hrs of the Culumbia river helps. always asking people that fish to save the skins.  There are lots of skins that will work. Lincod, eel, pike, carp just to name a few. Some will lose the color as they dry but just experiment.

Thanks, will do. I can get pike and carp, still working on Sturgeon, but we have a good supply in the Lake Winnebago system.   ;D

There are so many beautful bows here, and this one stands out. Absolutely stunning. I don't like fish or seafood at all, but I will make an exception with these skins. This is one of the most elegant bows I've seen on PA.

 Thanks Okie ;D
Mullet, I'm still working on that one for you and a couple others. I think I've had my share of sturgeon. The next batch is going to those that have ben waiting. ;)

Keenan I have been meaning to ask someone this so I guess it will be you. I have 3 or 4 pairs of sturgeon skins for backing here how do you get the white spots to stand out the ones I have show but not like the ones on your bow or the other ones that I have seen hear do you sand them lightly to bring them out or what? Thanks Tom
Title: Re: Sturgeon Backed Cascara
Post by: Keenan on April 17, 2008, 02:42:24 am
Dave the F/D is coming up, Sorry My wife is going to do it because it's her bow ;D She's been working some long days this week and will get it up as soon as possible.
Mark thank you, Get over this way and see it up close  ;)
 Thanks Apex
Napper; Some skins have fewer bone flake then others but it dose help to darken the bow with Black leather dye befor putting on the skin. Because the skin can be somewhat trasnparent it will sometimes lshow through and wask the colors if you don't.
Don't san them or they may come off.  Keenan

 Thanks Ryano.

Tiller;  I'm trying, heck last year I called in a 5x5 right in front at twenty yrds but she also had a 4x4 bull drooling on her just a couple yards away and she couldn't move. I got the 4x4 repositioned and she got busted by the 5x5 as she turned to shoot. She's more then ready to go kill something. ;D

Cowboy thank you, and that is so right.

Thanks Shawn Glad you like it, Welcome to the site.

Yooper;   ;D ;D ;D I told her she might get more votes then my ugly mug :D

Gordon: She really enjoyed that compliment. We've been married six years now and I'm still captivated, twitterpiated, moon struck, head over heals  or whatever  you call it.   Heck I could hardley take the pics ;D  Keenan

Kenneth, Thanks, She loves the bow and is very proud of it but there are some incredible bows on as always and just to be in the line up is an honor. My jaw dropped over Pats latest gauva bow ;)   Keenan

Thanks Jamie, now you know why she's my number 1 hunting partner ;) Hunting season for us is what we look forward to and plan for all year long every year. Crisp frosty mornings with the elk bugles echoing in the distance and sunny afternoons taking lunch breaks on the side of a high mountain ridge. Just dosen't get much better then that.
Heck I even enjoy watching her put on make up when we are out in the woods. ;D ;D ;D  Keenan

Keenan, that bow is plumb beautiful to these ol' eyes (or should I say Cascara beautiful -  :)). Just what/where is Cascara - is it known by another name, etc.?

If you (and she) don't mind I'd like to put the Standing Full Draw pic of your Wife on my Traditional Bows Drawn page. If it's OK she will close out Page 15 of my TBDs. Thanks anyway.

Lulyn Would be honered to be in your Full draw book. Thank you.

Thanks Cowboy & David, She's at a "Mary Kay" party tonight but when She gets in I'll have her read the resposes and let her chime in here. She saw a few already and was very moved ;)   Keenan

The crazy part is that we sometimes get what we ask for: I was a single parent for ten years and prayed for a woman that was strong in character and strong enough, to tell me when I was wrong, Yet wise enough to know when and how, ::) We are still working on that part ;D  I got everything I ever hoped or prayed for and then some ;)    Keenan

Thanks Deerhunter and Yooper,  good luck on the search. The bark peels of real easy and is yellowish inside with a distinct sweet smell.  If your not sure if it's cascar just lick the bark and wait a little while >:D If you don't find yourself running for the trees it's not cascara :D :D

I can't belive that I haven't read this post before. What a beautiful bow! Cascara is one of my favorite bow woods, and as a matter of fact I am in the process of building a cascara bow for my wife as we speak. After seeing the bow that you built for your sweatheart, Keenan, I am sure not going to show your post to my sweety, and unless it turns out real fine I probably won't post a picture of it! Beautiful creation Keenan!
