Hi guys!
Long time no see! I've asked some questions on PA before but this is actually my first bow post. I wanted to tell you my story and show you my bows.
Two and a half years ago, when I was a graduate student studying at Purdue University, a friend of mine showed me a composite horn bow from Mongolia, and I couldn't move my eyes away from it. It was just, gorgeous. This bow ignited my inner passion started long time ago. As a kid, I always loved bows and arrows but I had never thought about making one. So I decided to make something I could call as my own. This was how my bow-making journey started, and I was hooked ever since. Though it was not an easy one, I do enjoy every piece of it, for I have met so many amazing bowyers and learned so much along the way.
So here’s the bow;
This is a one-piece Osage Orange bow. It’s 64 inches tip to tip and 62 inches nock to nock, and 45 pounds at my 27.5-inches draw length. I got the stave from Carson last year, which is one of the best and the snakiest in his collection. I steam-bent the tips to introduce a little bit of reflex for performance purposes, and inlaid a shell as arrow plate. The super wide ball python skin works nicely on the back of the bow. The tip overlay is a combination of sheep horn, water buffalo horn, African black wood, blood wood, and maple, in order to match the camo of the snake skin. The string is made out of 12 strand D97.4 coats of tru oil and a thin layer of beeswax. I’m very pleased with the overall result.
Enjoy, and merry Christmas!!

Damn! That is nice. Finish work looks really well done. The inners could move a bit more but that is a subject for another post. Nice, nice, nice.
-
Wow. Stunning bow, congrats brother!

Hey Lee, long time no see. We met at Marshall a couple years back. I knew from seeing your work than that you are one of those gifted guys who just gets it. This bow is just gorgeous. Great work and so glad to see ya back.
-
Well done man! Thats one heck of a fine looking bow there. Love them curves :)

Like Mike said Lee. We knew you were gonna produce something fine. We could all see that you really had the bug. Don't no if you know it but we gave you a different handle. We called you Beaver cause you really made the chips fly. I just wish I could have been there for the first arrow you let loose. Bet that was a sight.
You did real good with that one. Don't take that one to Florida or the python hunters will get it on you. I know you were in search of a nice snaky stave. Looks like you found it and did it proud.

PS hope to see more in the near future

Ye Li...I have often wondered what happen to you after MoJam...you did a fine job on this bow! I don't think the inners need much either as the additional wood needed tillering a snakey bow often requires a little added stiffness in the fades to increase speed and reduce handshock. That is a BOM for sure...enter it and you have my vote. The tip overlays are pure art as well. Hope to see you at one of the bow making shoots this year.

Crikey.

Excellent craftsmanship and balance...Looks like a screamer

Nicely done. A little more bend in the inner limbs and the tips look a little vulnerable BUT that is a beauty of a bow.
-
Amazing!
-
That is a very nice bow. Well done
-
Excellent. :)
-
Real beauty! Its hard to find stave like that. Everything fits.... :). I would jump very high if i would find Your bow in the grass :P
-
Looks like red tail boa skin to me (also know as the common boa). That is one heck of a bow.
-
Ye Li,
Most definitely a "snakey" bow! Very nice job! I'm with Bob, looks like a winner to me!

-
Very nice work LiyeLiye. You've come a long way in your bow making skills.Hope to see you again at Mo Jam.

Cool bow!
To me it also looks more like a boa than a python.
I have a rock python skin, which is a quite thick skin. Was yours also thicker? Did you prepare it somehow different as the thinner skins?
With the nocks I have a bit of a problem but maybe I'm wrong. I like the looks but I experienced following: different woods( materials ) have different densities, - when the string loop pushes down, it will compress one more which will create a lil step by time. This will wear off the loop.
Maybe I'm wrong, but i repaired tips of some fg bows where the nock grooves weren't done properly.
The strings got cut always at the same spot, where I always found a lil step at the transition from wood overlay to glass laminate.
Just my two cents...

VERY nice work! Please post more, sir!

Beautiful bow and skillful workmanship on a tricky stave. Great job.
