How difficult is it to make a kiln from scratch using fire brick?
-
You posted on the flintknapper thread so I am guessing you want to cook rock. The easy way would be to buy a turkey roaster at a yard sale and use it.
-
I do indeed wanna cook rock. Most of what I find on job sites is tough and grainy
-
turkey roaster is probably the best
-
Does a toaster over work if I can t find a turkey roaster
-
yeah sure as long as it gets to the right temps.
-
Look on craigslist for a roaster. I can't speak on a toaster oven.
-
Alright thanks guys
-
Ive heard lots of good about toaster ovens. Never used on myself. FWIW P

No experience with either, but I would think you definitely want a variable temperature control up to about 500 degrees F. You can also use an old charcoal grill with sand over and under the rock and a 20# bag of briquettes, that was posted a while back by some one who is smarter than me!

Charcoal grill sounds good too

My preferred method of heating stone is in the ground .... when I have the time. But I have heated a lot of stone w/ a turkey roaster. If you take the pan out. Bed the bottom w/ a lil bit of sand or dirt it will just barely get to 500* . With the pan in only about 450*
It’s easier to control the heating times on larger stones to lessen the chance of crazing. It’s even works on most low grade stones.

I honestly don't know how good this rock is but some seems decent

pics?

I've used a Black&Decker toaster oven for years, on the second one now. I bought both at Flea markets for $5 a piece. It gets up to 550 degrees and works for most of the rock I need to cook.
-
I'll have to take some when I'm home

Here is some rock I have
