Got this stave at OJAM gathering. Here we go.
-
Ok. 67”45@28 -9”handle , mass 23 oz. pyramid. I am going to Try to duplicate this bow in a snake. Check for shock, mass weight, speed and what ever else y’all can think of.
-
Here is the pyramid beside it.
-
That’s gonna be Awesome!! Good luck with it
-
Laid out
-
Would you look at that. Nice. Is that a new ,and up and coming flight bow Arvin? That will make a real conversation piece were ever you shoot it.Hope every thing works out for you.
-
That's gonna be fun and looks like nice rings too. Good luck. :OK
-
Roughed out!
-
Bassman we are going to find out how much difference there is . Now for reflex.
-
Good. The bow is looking awesome so far. Post your findings when your done ,and shoot the bow. Good luck.
-
Good looking stave Arvin!

On caul.

Cookin the Hedge!
Looks like a good chunk of Osage. Think you can keep it that thin in those turns?
HH~
-
Well I don’t know Hedge. This is my first snake. Lack of patches will tell I recon. ;D >

This snake likes heat!

I have not made any really snake bows. Watched a bunch done and it looks like in turns in working part of limb is where it makes or breaks. You prolly got a piece with great ratio if i know you. So, prolly wont be an issue.
Very interested to see what you find in that character piece of wood.

Quiz!!!!
Who did this first and when. Should that line assist in tillering. And if so spill the beans.
-
looking great,, :)

Back sanded and honed.

Tip overlays

On the long string
-
can't wait to see it bending Arvin...that's a great looking tillering tree as well... :OK
-
That’s my 50# record bow traced at brace. You get it braced and it matches that profile and you are pretty much done. Arvin
-
It’s fifty at 27! Looks good tonight . Check it tomorrow . If I still like it well then it is going to be 50@27!
Arvin
-
Bob this is as close as I can get for the moment. Shot it . Pretty nice. Testing coming soon.
-
that's cool... the bottom limb being a little stiff may well come around after shooting it in Arvin...you know that...you've made a lot more bows than I have. I have never made a snaky bow that really performed as well as a 'perfect' piece, but if it's close and snaky...be VERY happy and enjoy the people always admiring it. :OK
-
Pretty cool. Following along, and looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
-
True Oil and humidity just don’t like each other.
-
that's OK Arvin...you will hide that true oil when you put a nice snakeskin on it... :)
-
Ain’t happening as long as I own it Bob.

I use this exact concept. It works darn near perfect. The only thing to add is that I try to get the draw weight to match at half draw, before ever going further.
-
I only tried that Sleek cause I new that one was right. Most all bows 67-69” come close to that profile once tillered. I am still learning tiller on the tree. Looks like a helpful way to get more exact tiller. The ones with the grid are hard for me to keep up with. To many lines . Arvin
-
Ok bow needs about 6 more coats of true oil but here are the results. Both bows came in at 27oz. Both 50@28” 67” ntn. Both pyramid in limb design. The straight one is a bit wider at the fades. The snake took 1” more set than the straight one. The snake shot 5 shots between 171-176 FPS , the straight shot 5 shots 177-180. Arrow weight 435 gr

Pair of nice looking bows right there. Not much difference in performance. Good job and bringing that snake to life.
-
Oh left out one important thing shock!!! The snake was not bad in shock but had a tad more than the straight bow.
-
Awesome job on a great pair of bows 👍🏻
-
I bet it would be pretty tough to get both those limbs in prefect timing as different as they are. If all you got is a little hand shock, I would say you done good.
-
Arvin ,considering the limbs being more narrow, I think that piece of snaky wood is doing an excellent job, as did the bowyer that made it. :OK I'd trade you a perfectly straight Mojam Clout shoot bow for it once you get tired of it. :)
-
very nice. I've often wondered how much snakiness would affect the speed. I'm glad you didn't skin it ;D ;D

Ok final test. Into a 3-5 mile wind. Shot two of my broadhead flight arrows 200yds and 210 yds. Probably has 220 or so in it. One of those arrows went 247 with d97 from my 50@28 flight bow. Better results than I thought from a snake. Maybe a sneaky snake. Arvin
-
Those are two beautiful bows!! Great job!
-
those are great numbers for any bow Arvin ... "ya' done good" :OK
-
you done good.

What grain is that arrow Arvin? Thats darn impressive. You must have your form, release,, and arrow perfected.

462 gr. Sleek

Very nice bow Arvin. I’m just a sucker for the wiggles. Especially when they still know how to use what they got. Pretty and a worker to.

Got to love a good snakey bow :)
How thick is your handle right at the shelf?
I'd say your bit of shock might be from the upper limb. Mid limb out to the tip needs a wee tickle to my eyes. Hard to tell with the background though :)
Congratulations on the record holding bow as well!
-
Bownara you need 1-1/2 back to belly. More on white woods.
-
This might be what you want?
-
Thanks guys for the kind comments. It has been a fun build . Arvin
