Title: When to harvest hickory?

Theres a small hickory tree im eyeing. When should i harvest it and when should i split it into staves?

Whenever you want, if you do it now the bark might still come off pretty easily but the longer you wait the more it'll stick until spring

After peeling the bark can the wood underneath work as the back?

...unless the bark sticks then you will have to remove the bark with a drawknife or other sharp tool to get a good back ring.

This time of year it is unlikely that the bark will slip off easily. The last I cut was in late July and getting the bark off was like chipping off concrete, this was in NW Alabama.

Once the juices start flowing in the spring, when the leaves are just out is a good time to cut whitewood, hickory included. At least that's when I prefer to cut hickory.
