Theres a small hickory tree im eyeing. When should i harvest it and when should i split it into staves?
-
Whenever you want, if you do it now the bark might still come off pretty easily but the longer you wait the more it'll stick until spring
-
After peeling the bark can the wood underneath work as the back?
-
Yes
-
...unless the bark sticks then you will have to remove the bark with a drawknife or other sharp tool to get a good back ring.
-
This time of year it is unlikely that the bark will slip off easily. The last I cut was in late July and getting the bark off was like chipping off concrete, this was in NW Alabama.
-
I think i will wait till the summer based off everyone’s advice. Thanks!

Once the juices start flowing in the spring, when the leaves are just out is a good time to cut whitewood, hickory included. At least that's when I prefer to cut hickory.
