Hey James, Thanks for taking the time to teach me a whole lot. My brain is super saturated with info right now; hopefully I can retain some. ;D Great to meet you and your fam. and look forward to seeing yall in the future. It was great to knap with everyone there and I learned somethin from everybody.
p.s.-be careful with those crazy folk you run into on your mtn.
-
thanks db ,in glad we hang out ,and smackes on some stone . all those guys in the pit were a hoot james
-
James, I'm really glad yall made it. It's always fun when we get together and hope you make that hunt in June. Maybe you can show me some good rocks for breaking windows ;D ;).
-
wish i could have been there with all the old timers... ;D sounds like a good place to be
-
their not oldtimers just "well aged" like a fine wine ;D
-
Hunter, you and David would have loved it there. Everyone was willing to help and teach anyone who wanted to learn.
I never knapped before and with the help of Hillbilly and a couple others, made my first point while I was there. It ain't perfect, but I'll have it on the end of one of my cane arrows this fall.
You both should make plans to try to make it down some time. I know it would be an event you would look forward to every year after. Saw Filer

Hey ! That's about the best "First point" I ever saw.I'd lash that on in a minute and take it huntin'. Good work. Frank

Just to add to all of the good reports, I, too, enjoyed the Tennessee Classic once again. Although I missed out on the nightly knap-ins, I thoroughly enjoyed making bows, hearing my first attempt, "The Knotty Girl" blow up and making a nice bow out of an elm stave I bought from SawFiler. Pappy, Greg, and all the Twin Oaks boys and girls really know how to put on a great event. To those of you around the country who have never been to this event, you are missing out on one of the great bow-building events in the U. S. It was nice to get to meet Mullet, JP, Cowboy, Pat B, and all the other guys that I have been reading posts from all of these years. I promise to be a more active contributor to the message board.

Dan, I enjoyed the conversation, good to see you again. But you about made me mess up my pants when that bow blew.
-
I just wanted to thank all of you guys for coming and participating in the flintknapping, I know you wouldn't have had it any other way. ;)
I enjoyed watching what few times I got free and was able to elbow my way through the crowd to see the flakes flying. I really respect you guys talent...

Shannon, that came out great. And guys, that's Rhyolite (man's rock ;D ) and he pressure flaked it with antler, too! No copper was harmed in the making of Shannon's point. :)
-
Shannon. You did a great job...especially for your first...and double especially since it is rhyolite! But now you have no excuses with any other kind of rock. ;D Pat
-
That did come out extra nice Shannon!! Ya'll about have me ready to start trying abo tools - gradually though, old dogs have their ways ;D.
-
Next year I plan to be in that Pit more often with you guys! Did all of you really stay up to 3 am smaking on that rock there?!?! ??? :o ;D
Going to heat treat that rock you sent me Paul. Now that I see what it can become I wont be so afraid of it now! ;D Let me know when you need some more obsidian. I will be making a weekend trip to get some more in the fall.

I remember heading down the hill at two o'clock one morning - I think ;D. I had time to dig that Redfern video out yet, but when I do I'll trade ya that box of obs.
-
Cool! You remember the name of it? I got a couple of his now so dont want to double up. Think I like Ratzits videos for detail and technique and Refern for his truth in knapping. Breaks a point and actually shows him doing it and is truthfull about not being perfect. Fun to watch him make those points too. Got any of the DC Waldorf videos you dont need anymore? Man I like watching the pros work! ;D
-
Saw Filer thats a superb point. i cant believe that your first :) i wish mine were like that i am going at knapping blind right now and have succesfully reduced cowboys rocks he sent to to gravel.
Clarksville is probably a 6hr drive from my house i will see you all in a few years
-
Don't remember the title Dave but only have two - one is Calf Creekin and other Ishi and Cahokia, can't remember which you were interested in. Don't have any DC stuff.
Don't worry about the pile of rubble David w - I'm sure you picked up some experience with that box of rocks. Keep on knappin and you'll gitter figured out :).
-
David, I bet if we just thought about it for a while, we could think of someone passing by pretty close to your neighborhood on there way down. Maybe you could catch a ride with somebody next year.
If you could ever make it down, you'd be knockin out points in no time flat.
And tell your parents not worry, you couldn't be around a better bunch of folks ;) Saw Filer

I have the Calf Creekin video and would be really interested in the Ishi and Cahokia. You see that guy Dane in his videos? He used to live around these parts and I often went over to his place to break rock with him. Nice guy! Met D.C. once at his place and had a good time learning from him and just shooting the breeze. Wish I could have spent more time with James and learned more from him. Oh well! Next year! ;D
-
Next year you guys are going to get to teach me how to knapp.
If I can stay out from under the bow making shed that is.
David

Cowboy,
I think that some of Redfearn's other tapes are Dalton Point, Clovis Point, and Hardin Point. I think I have them all, including D.C. Waldorf's, Bill Metcalfe's, and a couple of good Abo tapes. I play them over and over every night, and I still can't get it exactly right. I am trying to do more abo stuff lately. This one tape called "Gettin' 'em Thin" by Roger Warmaneiser--or something like that--is real good. Good flakin' to all of you guys. By the way, we have a great Primitive Arts Festival and Flintknapping show in Cartersville, GA, each year the last week in April. You ought to come. We had Craig Ratzat this year.
Dan
-
Dan, your making me feel bad! All the good events are back east. Need to get out that way again sometime. Can someone look into bringing more knappable material to the next Classic? I would have brought a bunch but the rates for shipping stone by airlines were way higher than the planes can fly!
David T
-
OK, David - I'll see if I can dig out the Cahokia/Ishi one when I get home and head it your way.
That sounds like a good event down there in GA Dan, would love to make it sometime. We do jobs down there some times - hopefully the planets and stars align at the right time one day ;D.
-
I'll plan ahead and get in the river next time before I come up.
-
James, nice meeting you and thanks for trying to help me with the knapping really liked your hat and was really fun shooting the course with you. Hope to see you next year. Kenneth
-
Cowboy,
You really ought to come to Pappy's TN. Classic. It is one of the great bowbuilding and now flintknapping events in the country. Where is Springtown, TX?
Dan
-
Dan, he was there! Had a great time breaking rock with him.
David T
-
Springtown is a Nice Small Town about 30 miles Northwest of Fort Worth
-
Yessir! You said it Destructo ;D. It ain't a bad town but I'm still a little partial to Bridgeport. That's where I grew up and it's smaller yet.
Dan, If you were at the classic - I probably bumped into ya. I'm terrible with names, show yerself - I'll probably have one of those ahha moments :).
-
Dan and Cowboy, We all ate lunch together Sunday morning at the Classic...at least I think that was ya'll! ;D Pat
-
Ahha! I think I know who Dan is now ;D.
-
Here he is Cowboy ,hard at work as usually at the Classic, one of the hardest workers there.
He stays at it the whole time.Works up a really big sweat. :) ;) ;D

Yup, that's who I was thinking about - glad to meet ya Dan ;D.
-
Hey Cowboy,
I was wanting to do something with that point you gave me. Would it be considered a knife? Sorry for my lack of knowing much on the flintknapping...just wanted to do it justice! Maybe an osage handle? What would you suggest? :)
-
Yeah, Greg - I think that would make a fine knife :). I didn't have anything in mind while I was knapping it, but it's too big to be any kind of projectile I would think, unless your into atlatl's but even then it's not very pointy on the tip. I'd put some of that osage you ripped up the other day on it for a handle, would think you could skin any critter in them parts with it ;D.
-
Thanks for filing in the blanks for me too Pappy. Nice to meet you Dan and finally put a name/handle to a face.
Mike

Hey! I remember you too Dan!!! Didn't get much of a chance to talk though. I was like you. Totally into bow building.
