Had this stave outside my office door for about a year and a half. Great rings and too interesting to put in the rafters but with a large knot in the center that made me always set it aside. The knot seemed to change direction in the handle and comes out the side near the arrow pass. Where it exits it was a bit soft so I removed as much as i could and filled with ground rock/super glue mixture. I left more mass in the handle than normal to prevent any movement in that area. Because of the knot, the limbs have some natural deflex starting in the handle. I left them that way and only reflexed a bit near the tips. Limb width was a bit more narrow than I like on a handle bow, if I recall correct it's just over 1 3/4" wide near the fades. I trapped the limbs to even out the compression/tension forces a bit better and to lighten the limbs up. Finished with a couple coats of Danish oil. Left handle bare to see the character and grain in the handle. Not at all what I expected when I split this stave out a couple years ago but turned out ok.
Hope you all have Merry Christmas!
Mike

-
Wow! Awesome character in that bow and nicely executed. One to be proud of!
-
Thanks Fellas! Forgot to mention its 66 ntn. That little bit of deflex in the handle sure makes for a smooth draw, Going to look for another stave like that to work on in the future but without a large knot I hope. lol

Love it , beautiful bow . Pappy

Wow! Phenomenal bow, and gotta love that handle character. Super cool
-
Excellent use of the wood's natural grain to create what looks like a very natural ergonomic grip. Nice that you didn't have to impose your will on the wood, but let the wood express itself.
-
Thanks guys! I agree Arvin. Thx JW, this build focused around the handle and went from there. Spent a couple evenings trying to just figure out what was best. Maybe got a bit lucky with this one :)

Yeah, and maybe you spent the time thinking things out and it paid off?
-
Absolutely. I never could hammer out a bow in a weekend, although I ruined alot of good material trying before I learned to slow down.
-
Very nice bow. Well thought out and beautifully executed.
-
I fell in love with that handle 8). Beautiful bow!
-
Mike,
Love all the bends and profiles on this one...That handle? well it's the cream on top! Excellent work buddy

The handle and fades look so beautiful!! Do you have tips, for making the fades so nice and sleek? Mighty fine bow, much good shooting to you!
-
Thanks guys!
Pumarchery, not sure I have a good answer to that. My best guess is that I left more mass in some areas to make up for the knot. As I didnt want any flex. So when I did narrow it up it looks a bit thinner than it is...
Another thought. The fades in my 1st few bows were very blocky and started very abrupt. To me that makes that area look much larger. After looking at bows made by more experienced and skilled people I started trying to make the fades more rounded and gradual. By rounding the belly side of the fade makes it look better IMHO and but maybe thinner overall as well. Poor explanation I suppose but thats the best I can think of.
