Hey all! Keenan and I decided to host a primitive bowyers gathering campout. it is in central oregon just north of the town of Sisters at a place called Squaw Flats. this area has a mixture of pines and juniper, with a large grassing meadow for long distance shooting. all are asked to bring some targets to set up a course with, we are encouraging primitive camping, but all are welcome. we will be doing bow building, flintknapping, and arrow making, and whatever else comes about. this is a dry camp whith no facilities other than port-a-potties. maps and flyers are available from either Keenan or myself. would be fun to make this a annual event. ps...if any of you are offended by snoring, then camp away from Keenan :P

cant believe I forgot the dates. it is may 16-18.

This should be a good gathering. We been fairlyy busy getting some stuff ready to work. Sounds like there will be a fair amount of people coming.Gordon and some of His group are coming over as well as some from other parts of the valley.
About the snoring ??? ??? I'm bringing a bow of ear plugs for all of those within ear shott of JJ, ;) I also have several throwing objects so when he gets to loud we can sgoot in the dark at the noise >:D >:D
Also JJ forgot to say Bring what tools you have for working the bows. we will have a limited supply for those just starting. Keenan

JJ does primitive camping mean no RVs or should we all start on our own teepees. ;D Can you guys post driving directions. Thanks Joel
-
Can we cut Juniper up there without a permit? Joel

Man sounds great. wish I could fly out that way and come to this gathering. Yer in my old stomping grounds....
Just moved back SE to NC almost 3 yrs ago... man time flys...
But I came from Vancouver wa. Lived down salem OR way for a number of years as well.
Used to spend a lot of time up towards sisters. BEAUTIFUL country. I miss the High desert the most... dont miss the rain much tho.
Hope Y'all have a blast.

the primitive camping is only a suggestion, any means of camping is fine, we can email you a map, just send one of us a PM. as far as cutting juniper, I will contact the forest circus and ask them. they do massive clearing of it so it shouldnt be a problem, but we are talking govt. here. the roads are good enough to drive a motorhome or pull a travel trailer and there is plenty of camping room. bring some extra wool socks in case Keenans snoring gets out of hand ;D

My wife was wondering if other women will be there. She was worried about being the only one. Joel
-
My wife has to work Friday and Saturday but might come up on Sunday if She dosen't get called in to much saturday night. Not sure if Dave's wife is going and there are a few women in our tradiion group that shoot but haven't heard so I'll try to get more info for you.

Wish I could be there guys! But just being back from the Classic and all my buisness partner would have a fit. Have fun and let me know how it all turns out!
-
As of right now Im having car insurence problems. So unless by some miracle I get my rebate check on Thursday in stead of Friday I can no longer make The Gathering. :'( Maybe next year. Hopefully I can make the Pope and Young Shoot In Brownsville in July. Joel

Juniper Junkie and Keenan who is taking the pics and is anyone going to do a write up and submit to the the magazine??? Chop chop!
sounds like a great time. Please post pics!
-
Got you covered Marie ;) ;) Not sure how this will all play out because it's our first run at this, but it sounds like there should be quite a few people. The weather has turned for the good ;D ;D Our first little heat wave is hitting on Friday to start things off and it's supposed to be in the low 90s through the weekend. :) Yea !! However after such a long winter we will all probably look like cooked lobsters by Sunday.
Dave and I are heading out there tomarrow to set up. This should be intresting with no power for heat guns, band saws, or sanders. :) All (old way) methods, We can heat bend over the fire and lots of shaping and reducing with hatchets knife and maybe even some stone tool work for our inspirational leader (Jamie)
I'll get as many pics as possible for ya, ;) Keenan
-
So you are saying that tis is the first annual Primitive Primitive Stick Bend not far from Bend?
-
Yes Marie, First of hopefully an annual event :) "Primitive Bow Bend" I like it ;D Thanks we might adopt the name ;D Keenan
-
WHAT A BLAST!!!! great people, even better food, good weather. who could ask for more?? we are definitely making this a annual event! lots of pics to come. I have proof that sunscreen really works (where you put it) ::)

Looks likea fun time Dave! Sign me up for next year. I will do my best to make it. But with the Classic schedule so close its going to be a real toss up!!! ;D
-
Looks like you had a great time with nice weather, glad it worked out for ya all :)
-
This was an awesome event!! There are alot of great stories and pics to come. We stayed an extra day so just got back and have alot of good pics to get down loaded. All four days were filled with gut busting laughing :D and chips flying with occational gourmet food binges ;D
We had quite a few first time bow builders and I was very thankfull for JJ, Gordon, Brian B, Dave H. and a few others who helped out to teach and give so much (hands on advice) to those just learning.
Gordon is going to piece together a thread about many of the things that took place. we even had some primitive fire building demonstrations and several successfull starters.
This is just a tease of things to come. :o Keenan

Sure looks warmer than the Buttes gathering!
-
Poor Tony took a lot of abuse this weekend, but the worse was when his nipple ring got caught in the bowstring :o never did find it ;D I bet that is the first time you ever heard someone say at a traditional shoot " hey look for my nipple ring it got ripped out" ;D ;D that is a whole new kind of hurt right there :D
-
JJ I'm still laughing about that one :D And the seen where he posed for pics with his flame a little to long. ::)
-
glad you made it back. here is a pic of cherie with her winnings for the long distance shoot. out of all the "highly skilled" archers there, a woman with a 35# bow is the only one to hit the target at 80 yards ??? even when we did it a second time :o she is still gloting over that. dispite all the work I think I gained weight over the weekend. Keenan must be living right, Gordon gave him the gods valley bow and arrows! goes to show, "what goes around, comes around"

I'm still staring at the bow in disbelief. It's a sweet shooter and I was able to pull off second place on the distance shoot with it. To see Gordon's work up close is very impressive and to own one of his bows has been a dream come true. The gift moved me to tears and the heart of others as well. People just kept giving away staves and tools for newbies and the generosity of everyone was incredible.
JJ wife Cherie is a good shot and to see her win was really cool. ;)We've all been humbled ::)

Looks like you guys and gals had a great time. Im sorry I missed it. Hopefully next year. Joel
-
You know how sometimes you arrive at a get together of people and you don't feel quite like you fit in or aren't real welcome....well that WASN'T the case at with this group!!! Thanks for the hospitality, generosity, and just plain welcoming attitude of everyone. I wish I could have come earlier in the weekend. Next year!!! I am really jazzed to get started on one of the staves that was given to me. This will be my first attempt. Yep, it was a good weekend. Sorry I missed out on some of those Dutch oven meals! The long distance shoots were a kick. (all except the "nipple ring" incident) Cherie was awesome and showed us all up with the FIRST arrow! Way to go! That put a big smile on my wife's face when I told her about it. But the best part was getting to met you guys and share some value time centered around a common interest. Thanks to all and I'll be seeing you next May.
-
I will be there next year! Now, that is if you dont plan on having another in the fall!?!? I can definatly make that one!!! Good food always draws me in!!!
-
Ya know, the weather is always nice here in october?????? maybe we can have another one? kinda like good potato chips...you cant have just one ;D
-
Looks like you guys had a blast! Thanks for the pics. It is great to see them and look to try to figure out who is who. I have to say the people on this board are very hospitable all over and I hope these different gatherings accross the country start to grow so that more people can exprerience the this kind of kinmanship. You guys are the best and the patience and welcoming attitude is what draws in new folks. The pictures and descriptions makes it more exciting to plan for the next year or get together... ;D
Keenan and Juniper J. thanks for the pics and stories...post more if you have em.
-
Count me in! Just set the date and I will be there.
-
Are you guys going to do this again?
-
YES. the dates are may 15,16,17. we will get flyers made and get them online. hope we luck out on the weather again.
-
I MAY be able to do this! Though the Tenn. Classic is early in may maybe I can get some more time off from the boss!
-
Yesterday, JJ , Buffalo, and Jim H. came over and played on the rock pile a while. JJ was giving napping lessons to Buffalo while I was helping Jim tiller an osage bow. Had fun and working on some of the details for the Central Oregon Bowyers Gathering. Checked the meadow last weekend and things looked good. There was even someone there with a nice tipi set up on the edge of the meadow.
We are expecting an even better turn out this year and are planning some real fun stuff. I just made a pair of moccasins for stalking those turkeys and hope to have some more Primitive type apparel as well. No not the loin cloth ::)
Lulyn was thinking of maybe painting our horses with some hand prints, spots and lightning bolts and bring them up there for more of the native scene and experience. If the weather looks good, we may do that for some morning rides if people want. we are working on the fliers right now so if you want a flier Pm me or Juniper Junkie with your address and we will get one out to you as soon as they are done. Keenan
