I posted this before in progress and still contemplating, I can only draw it to 21 at this weight, was thinking of taking it down to say 50 at 23,,
right now it was 48@20 I drew it to 21 in photo and think its about 50#,,
I did something different on this it was bending too much at top tip below the curve, I added sinew and heat treated that one spot,,wasnt sure how that was gonna go but seems ok,,
the braced profile looks bit funky,, unbraced looks ok, so I just contemplating now, may shoot it a bit as is and think about it, pics to come
maybe a couple scrapes on upper outer limb,,???
-
Looking very good Brad, getting the most out of that short stick. ;) :)
Pappy
-
The full draw looks nice. Be a fun little shortie
Bjrogg
-
more pics and test shot,, ;D of course im gonna paint it crazy and put a handle,,thanks for your patience,, and probably shoot it through chrono when I get it out to 23, the belly crack is from sinew drying , ,I didnt seal the belly well enough,, it goes back to rest at about 6 or 7 refelx, it is not fun to string at all :NN
-
That is slick. Gotta draw it to at least 25”!! >:D
-
well I might try it, right now I can only get it to 21 so im gonna have to work up to it or take the weight down a bit,,
-
Cool little bow, Brad. 8)
-
That's pretty great there Brad.....can't wight to see it all painted up! :OK
I guess you steamed or boiled in the curves before sinewing?
-
yes I boiled them,,they were too big and I couldnt get them to line up,, so I cut them shorter,, they were more stable and I was able to get them to work,,I remembered why I dont make recurves,, (-S
-
Lots of reflex in that one :) Cool little bow. look forward to the finished pics.

I love it, what a cool profile. Sweet little bow Brad, very very cool
-
That is really nice. It must spit those arrows out
-
That is a hell of a test shot
-
thanks guys,, yes its pretty "snappy" I will try to test it soon,,Im gonna narrow the tips a bit and have to align one some too,,not bad but the string is off to one side more than I like on one tip,,
-
Not fun to string ;D bet mine is easier :P
Those profiles are great. Hope to see it totally finished!
-
thank you gonna work on finish this week will post
-
Nice looking little bow Brad. Looks like it will throw and arrow pretty quickly. Can’t wait to hear.
-
ok heres what happened and didnt happen, I pulled it to 23,, and I heard a tick noise, so I passed out ,, well not really but kinda,,
so I looked and one strand of sinew had pulled up, so I drew it to 23 a few more times to see if it was gonna blow, and it shot fine, right now I am heating some hide glue and gonna wrap that spot, Im not proud,, when dry I will continue with shooting through chrono at 23 ,, which Im thinking is gonna be 55 plus,, pounds, it should spit an arrow pretty good at that draw,, I got some fast flight, is that natural material,, :D and will try with that just for fun,, of course I will put a sinew string on it for the deer and turkey to admire,, :D
-
Yup, I'm a fan. LOVE me some short bows and by golly that's a zinger.
-
Beautiful bow! With those recurves and that overall reflex must be snappy.
-
What happens if a piece of sinew gets lifted? Is it as bad as a splinter lifting on a self bow?
-
no I dont think its as bad as splinter,, just one strand didnt effect anything,, I just wrapped it to be sure it dont do it again,,
-
Great bow. Ticks of any kind are the worst. Hope it keeps shooting well for you.
-
If you applied some very hot, thin glue to the spot it would 're-activate' the glue and you'd be good. No need to wrap it. Do you see a spot mid upper that looks like its bending a wee bit much?
-
thank you Bownarrow, got it glued,, as suggested and think you right about the we bit mid limb,,
-
488 grain arrow 184fps,,roughly pulling,,55#@ 23 inches,,I didnt have anyone to spot for me, but pulled as best I could to mark at 23 inches, its close,, thats 8.87 GPP
this will give you rough idea what a short draw will do,,you can do the math, if I pulled it to 25,,with added draw weight and power stroke,, it would really spit one, but im afraid it would blow, so not gonna try it today,,
-
Thats awesome brad!
-
Ok, I have got to build one!
I don't have any osage, but Heat Tempered HHB like what Marc St. Louis uses should work fine, especially if I go up to 62" to handle a 26" draw.
You are really starting to get me more interested in shorter bows.
-
i think its good to know how to make them,, then your shorter staves become more valuable,, :D
thanks Fox, I was pleased,,it gets good arrow flight too,, :)
-
That's good it shoots straight too!
I really love smaller bows. I have a hard time not always smacking things with longer bows ;D

Smacking things?
-
Like I’m clumsy with them.. always hitting the tips against stuff (lol)
-
Ok, that makes sense. I really like the long smooth draw, but I've got to admit my 74" bow is a little awkward. :)
-
Very nice bow Brad. Could be a contender with a flight arrow. Kevin needs a bit of competition. 😀😀
-
That’s an awesome bow Brad. Well done! Looking forward to the finished pics
-
thank you so much, I have plans to get the art work and handle started today,, and then if I get my nerve up pull it to 24 :D

Excited to see how it goes!!
-
art started on back
-
Looking good Brad
-
art on one limb,, I think the photo with all the clutter is more interesting,, )P(
-
limb 2 sketched out,,
-
ok here is the finished back, I have a design in mind for the belly,, I will try to shoot it at 24 inches,, I was gonna pull it on a tree in case it blows,, but you have to have some confidence in your work ,, so I gonna just pull it,, ;D
this is more info than you need but if you got this far with me, I will tell you a little about the art,, I have been inspired by many cultures, this is a combo of alot of different designs some imagination and some from traditional images,, all mixed to gether,, I am not a purist about the art, so am not tied or constrained to any one set of images,,of traditional art,,
I just improvise and paint what comes to me,, I think the bow dictates what is to come,,I just follow,,on this bow I used ink, gouache,,acrylic,,,the underpainting was acrylic,,I like it and it protects the sinew,,I may but a leather handle it will cover some of the art, but I will know its there,, I have a design in mind for the belly,, but my brain hurts from the detail of this one, and will take a few more days to do that, enjoy, and pm me if I can help with any project you have with art for your bow,,,,,
-
very very nice brad... that looks awesome :)
-
thank fox, greatly appreciate your positive comments,, (SH)
-
I like the deer tracks, there pretty great ;D :-D
-
My favorite is the limb with the deer tracks, and the white part above it, but I like it all : )
-
Seeing the process here is really cool. Hope it doesn't blow up on the tree! (Just think how differently we would look at art in a museum if it might explode at any moment...)
-
yes you right abou that,, Im getting my nerve up,,
detail of running deer and chief on back,,
then detail of belly design with clutter,,
-
Beautiful work Brad , love it . Pappy
-
thanks Pappy,, wish I was in Tennesse so you could shoot it,, hope you get to turkey hunt some too,, :)
-
That's awesome brad... I didn't see the chief and deer before, there really nice :OK love the belly too!! :) (SH)
-
ok I tried to pull it to 24, but it made a creaking sound a little past 23 so I lost my nerve,
so I think i nearly got it to 24 when it shot 187 fps with the 488 grain arrow,,Im am afraid to weigh it,,let me get my nerve up, but I think its a bit over 55 at nearly 24,, ok I know thats vague,,but thats it for today,, (lol)
believe me I really wanted to pull it a little more and hit 190 so I could brag about it,, but then I could see the bow in several pieces at my feet in my imagination, and thought better of it and just made myself stop,,,, )P(
ok its about 51# @ 21,, I was brave enough to pull it that far,, so that would put it about 56#@23 so when I pulled it past 23
so about 58 little past 23,,roughly 8.41 gpp,, roughly,, 187fps with 488 grain arrow,,
I know I promised to hit 24 inches but when the bow creaked I lost my nerve,, ;D
-
but it made a creaking sound a little past 23
Maybe it's just the paint. :)
-
you are probably right, since it did not blow up,, I am erring on the side of caution, since I was attemting to draw it more than half the bows length, that is usually my stopping point,,
but great observation, the paint can make a noise sometime that is scary,, (W
-
That is definitely a scary sound ;D.... pretty darn impressive little bow !! And oh my goodness those arrows... are really really nice :)
-
I weighed the bow at a good solid 23 and it is 56#,,,the mass weight with string on it is,,11.3 oz,,
-
Real nice bow there thanks for taking the time for posting during the build. Cool paint job.

I'm not surprised. The shape says FAST
