Title: Another question
Post by: Russ on May 16, 2021, 07:20:53 pm
Sorry for the silly question. I just forgot the equation for what draw length fits what bow. Thanks

Can a 62” bow be drawn to 26”?

Haha Nevermind I just saw the thread made a little bit ago about bow length vs draw length....

Sure 62 is plenty, some do it different but I try to double draw length and add no moving parts like fads and handle for a ridged handle now, less for bend in the handle bow, this is really safe and that’s what I want. Pappy

Draw out your bow and see where the checks fall on the tip. Checks are not necessarily deadly. even if it falls within the tip a sinew wrap may be all you'll need if even that.
A 62" bow is long enough for a 26" draw.

I drew the bow out pat, the problem is that the checks weren’t running along the back of the bow, they were running along the side. I cut the bow down to 62” and the checks/premature delams  ( :) ) were gone... now I got another problem....

What do I do with that rotten hole in the side? Its really close to the fades... I scraped out a lot of the dead wood... can I fill it with CA glue and sawdust??? Do I try to carve it out?

I havnt roughed out the bow on the other side

Where did you find that hunk of wood? looks weathered to me.

I got it through a trade here. It’s a nice persimmon stave, I just don’t know what to do about this... to carve around it and make a hump on the other side would violate the grain, but to leave it would cause a pretty serious weak point.

How deep does the knot go?  Don't carve out the knot. How thick is it above the knot? Can you move the bow over towards the other side of the stave to get away from the knot?

Tradecraftsman, this is a persimmon stave I sent to Russell. It's been in my basement since it was sent to me a few years ago. It's a sound piece of now wood.

Listen to Pat!  I would scrape the hole as clean as possible, then fill with ca or epoxy and sawdust paste.
