Title: Sugar maple stave question...
Post by: Jakesnyder on June 22, 2021, 11:34:06 am
So this stave had the bark removed when it would peel right off. It has these 2 little gouges in it. It's hard to explain but it is how the tree grew not man made cuts. They are too deep to stand out. Should I try chasing a ring or will they be just fine? The biggest one is maybe 1/8in long and maybe a little less than that deep.

If they are natural they should be OK. If it would make it feel better just fill them with super glue.

Those are natural inclusions, they shouldn't be a problem,

I built a half dozen Sugar Maple bows a few years back. Some had those little holes. I did as Pat suggested and filled with super glue. No problems at all.
