Title: tiny hatchet
Post by: BrianS on September 02, 2021, 07:51:44 pm
Hello Everybody,
Kevin aka "Buffalo Gobbler" gifted me this tiny old hatchet. I believe it was intended as a toy for a small child. I cleaned it up some and it is now hanging up in the barn with my other axes. Anyone ever see one like this? Any info would be appreciated.
Take care,
brian

I remember such a child sized hatchet sold in the fifties or early sixties. They were painted green.
Never examined one closely enough to tell if they would take or hold an edge.

About the same time there was a neat looking folding survival hatchet available by mail order. I wish I'd ordered one of those. The handle folded around the blade and it could be carried in a pocket. From the look it should have been useful in downing saplings and cutting limbs to construct a shelter, and chopping through joints when butchering game animals.

Here is a picture with the tiny axe with some of my axes. I have some more axes and hatchets at the cabin and in the truck tool box. I have no idea why I have collected so many over the years. I just like axes. All but a couple, I was ether gifted or picked up for 10 bucks or so. Refurbished many of the heads and put new handles on some. All are sharp and ready to use. I've given a few away to Friends of late. One man could never use all of those axes in 10 Lifetimes! Just hate to see older vintage axes neglected and rusting away. Not shown are about a half dozen project heads that still need to be refurbished or re-handled.  Going to be one hell of a garage sale when I decide to downsize!

Nice pile, I love them also, not sure how many I have but it is a bunch. I also love refurbishing them and making handles, I also collect hammers of all kinds, funny what makes a man happy. ;) :) :)

Just acquired this one on Saturday.
Stamped in the head is:
Buffalo Black Axe
Hand Forged
Buffalo Wholesale HDW Co
Buffalo NY
I was able to save the old handle. Beautiful feel to the axe. The head has a little mushrooming due to somebody using it as a hammer sometime over it's life.
