Title: Hickory backed black locust bow (laminate) (full draw added)
Post by: Ryano on May 15, 2008, 12:14:39 pm: Here's a bow I just finished up. Its a deflex reflex hickory backed black locust with a strip of apple heartwood in the grip and tips. Its 66" long ntn 1.5" wide to mid limb and pulls 53#@28" I purchased the hickory and locust at the local saw mill and ripped my own laminations out it and glued it all up with titebond 3. Anyone who has access to a local saw mill and has minimal tools can make bows like this. Its very simple and the materials are easy to get. I did one of my funky dye jobs on the back of the bow that everyone seemed to like at the classic, and the belly and tips are dyed as well. Hope you like it!

Gordon, it started out with the tips about two inches in front of the grip but it actualy gained reflex as I tillered it and then lost some again after being shot in. The tips rest about 1.5" in front of the handle now.

Better to be safe than sorry. I don't like to push my luck with locust anyways, it tends to fret if you over stress it to much. ;D

These laminated bows are so easy to tiller and fast to make, I really enjoy making them now and then just to break up the monotony of making selfbows....

Hillbilly, it is a pretty good combo. I've also backed locust with hard maple and liked that as well.

Thank you bear. I'm more of a selfbow guy myself but I occasionally like to tinker with these kind of bows.....

Post by: snedeker on May 16, 2008, 11:08:57 am: Fine stuff. The dye really changes the look of the BL doesn't it. I really like how you angle your tips for the overlay. I have been trying to get a way from plunking it down on the top of the back. I'm putting finishing touches on a silk backed BL board straight bow. Trying to also get a little creative with finishes.

Cowboy, Thanks buddy. Give it a try, you will be amassed how easy it is and it does make a pretty effective camo especially on bright colored woods.

I been in the ditch bad bud. Went in the hospital that Sat ya'll was at Pappy's, and stayed most of last week. But I'm on the mend now, improving every day. Loved the pics btw. The young un is a trooper son. Looked like ya'll had a big time. Sorry I missed ya'. Next year for sure. Did you ever bust out billets from that stick of 'sage. I got some of that tree I'm working on now, hankerin' to get out to the shop this afternoon. It's real perty weather here. Will be my second day in the shop since probably 4 weeks, yesterday being the first. LOL

I got that piece split and a ring chased on them and there in the house drying some more. Should get to it pretty soon. I think I'll splice them in deflex and recurve the tips. btw, do you know how thick the BL was before the fades?

Greg, I don't use tape. Its just aplied with a paper towel and the edges are sanded with a block to get the smooth straight edge.

Greg, you can go to a fine art supply store and get some liquid latex masking. Painters use it on canvas and also on various paper and other surfaces. It would probably work fine on wood. You paint it on with a brush, dries fast, and when you are done, you simply peel and scrape the stuff away.
