I have it at about a 5" brace right now pulling 40# at 22". I think I need mor bend on the inner thirds but thought I'd see what you all thought?
-
Bonus photo of a stock removal machete I finished up the other week.
-
Inner third as in closer to the fades? I would remove from the outer half of each limb
-
I think the bend on both limbs looks pretty good. The little hoop dee doo at the right fade makes it look off but I don't think it is. You could get the outer limbs to bend some more but it's not necessary. IMO
-
What is your target draw length/weight?
-
TimBo I am aiming for 40# at 30in also Pat B and Nasr thank you for the advise.
-
Looks pretty good to me, the right looks a little stiff right out passed the the hoop de do, but it also looks like that limb maybe has a little propeller , if so that may be causing it to look stiff, look at it from the other side should tell the story. :)

I would go with pat advice. Thought it could bend more outwards but I would take his advice if I were in your position.
-
Good eye pappy it does indeed have propeller twist on that limb ill post a picture of it from the other side later this week when I get home but here is one from the belly of that limb and thank you for the advise I really appreciate everyones input.
-
Here is a picture from the other side left limb is what was on the right.

Tiller looks good. How long is the stave? How do you know your draw length is 30 inches? Jawge
-
George stave is 68ish inches nock to nock as for my draw length its just a guess really I have zero archery experience so I stood like I was holding a bow and pulled a tape from my left hand to the corner of my mouth. I know most common seems to be 28" but I fuigered having it tillered out to 30 and if I only end up drawing 28 would be safer than the other way around.
-
I just happened to be sitting in my recliner watching the morning news and had a tape measure on the table beside me. If I use your method to measure my draw length I came up with 32. In the real world I draw real close to 28 to the corner of my mouth. Remember that 40# @ 30 will probably be about 34/35# @28. For every inch shorter you can expect a loss of 2# to 3# in draw weight.
-
Bentstick54 what would be a better way to measure my draw length without already having a finished bow?
-
Try resting a yardstick on your chest, form a triangle with your arms, and hold the other end with your fingertips. Don't scrunch your shoulders forward...look at the measurement at the end of your fingertips and see what you come up with. That is pretty accurate for me (26-27"). If I use a tape measure I get 32" or more, depending on where I measure from the left hand.
-
I have used Timbos method years ago to get a ball park. I just went down stairs and got a yard stick and checked using this method. I measured about 27 on the yard stick. My wood arrows I shoot 3d with are cut 28-1/2 from throat of nock to back of point. At full draw I have about 1/2 of arrow sticking out past the back of my bow. Other factors can affect your actual arrow length, as in handle/ grip size and shape, so YMMV. I would just go slow as you approach 27 or so, start checking your draw length slowly without overdrawing, or shaving off too much weight. You can always take more wood off, but you cant put it back on.
-
Yes, Gingerbread, you don't want to tiller to 30" if you don't have to. The yardstick in the chest gives a good ballpark measurement. Jawge
-
Tambo, Jawge, Bentstick I took your advice yardstick is showing me at about 27" so thank you for the advice you all definitely saved me some major errors. I'm going to tiller it to 27" and 40 or 45# and see how it feels right now I have it at 26" and 45# and I wouldn't want to hold it at full draw for very long so I think I may take it down to 40 until I actually learn to shoot it lol.
-
Welcome!
-
Youre welcome, remember if you need to in the future you can always tiller it out a little farther in you find you need to.
-
It shoots!!!!Thank you all so much for the help!!!! 69&1/2 in NTN 45# at 27" any critiques please let me know so I can make the next one better.

It looks a little whip tillered (or maybe not quite. It's the second half of the middle third that I'm seeing) but at that length it shouldn't really develop any stack.
It's a good looking bow. I bet if you set it aside and build another that's a little lighter, you'll appreciate the weight soon.
#45 seemed incredibly heavy to me when I made my first board bow. After a year of shooting several bows, I've settled in to where that is my comfortable weight. I can't even pretend to be consistent at #60.
-
BetterTrees im def goimg to be starting another one shortly but 45# isn't to bad for me I don't think it's maybe a hair heavy at the moment but I also have a cracked rib so I'd say thats part of it lol. It may be a little whip tillered it's got a hair more bend in the outer 2/3s than the first but I cant notice any stack it does have some hand shock though. All in all for my first bow im pretty happy I will definitely be making more.
-
Nice work! Have fun shooting it.

looks good .. congrats.. gut

Looks great to me! Well done.
